Transcription:

We have already seen in this sermon series of 1 John that God wants His people to be happy and the last time we were together we looked at The reasons as to why so many people are unhappy. 1 Today were going to look at the reasons as to why We should be happy as Christians. The world we re living in today is full of hatred and greed. The world we re living in today is full of suffering and death. And when you read the newspapers, or watch the news on your television there s no escaping the fact that the world today is a tough place to live in. And sometimes when you look at the events of the world you might ask the question, How on earth can anyone be happy when there is so much hatred and greed around? How on earth can anyone really be truly happy with all this suffering and death around? Well what we need to remember is that what the world is like today is pretty much what the world was like in the days of the early church. There was hatred and greed; there was suffering and death in the days of the early church. And when John wrote in 1 John 1:4 We write this to make our joy complete. What he s reminding us is that we can still be full of joy even though the world is full of suffering and death. Now I ve quoted Paul s words in Philippians 4:4 a few times in the past, Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! But what we need to remember is that Paul wrote this when the church was in the midst of trials, temptations and troubles. He was trying to tell them that God s people can be happy despite of what s happening in the world around them. Because despite what s happening in the world around us today, John is going to share with us 3 reasons as to why we can happy as Christians, even when there is hatred and greed and suffering and death all around. John says the 1st reason as to why a Christian should be happy is, because God has spoken to mankind. 1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. Have you ever wondered why God needs to speak to us? The story goes that the brother of Whitefield, the great evangelist, was deeply despondent at times, and felt his utter worthlessness and helplessness. On one such occasion Lady Huntingdon spoke to him about his salvation, and tried to induce him to come to Christ. To all her pleas he answered, Oh, it is of no use! I am lost! I am lost! Thank God for that, she said to him. Why? asked the man in astonishment. Lady Huntingdon said, Because Christ came to save the lost, and if you are lost, He is just the one who can save you. That s why God needs to speak to us. We re lost and we can t find our way. Jeremiah understood this, that s why he wrote in Jeremiah 10:23 I know, O Lord, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. Jeremiah is trying to tell us that mankind needs some direction in their lives. That s why the Psalmist said in Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. God speaks to us to give some direction, to give us some meaning and purpose to life. We re living in a society which is made up of temporal. We re living in a society which is forever changing. Our governments sometimes change every 4 years. Our lifestyles change almost everyday with this get rich fast culture. People chop and change their husbands and wives if they are not happy together. Years ago the only form of communication was Morse code, now we have mobile phones and the internet. Our culture and lifestyles and the things around us are constantly changing.

But loved ones it s during these times of change that people need something that is fixed and permanent. People need what Hebrews 13:8 says, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. God spoke to mankind to offer mankind something fixed and permanent, Jesus Christ Himself. If your direction in life is to get rich fast, then you need to seriously consider Paul s advice to Timothy. 1 Timothy 6:9+10 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. When are we going to realise that mankind s association with material things isn t permanent. The material things of this world aren t going to last forever. 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Even your own life isn t going to last forever, again Peter reminds us of this in 1 Peter 1:24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall. If your looking for something which lasts forever, something which is fixed and permanent then read on in 1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you. The one thing which is going to go on and on and on and on, is the very words which God spoke to man. Jesus tells us that in Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. You see loved ones God almighty, the God you read about in your Bibles has already spoken to mankind. What do you think about when you read and study the Bible? Do you think yes that s a nice story, it must have been amazing to have witnessed that occasion? Do you go to the Bible with the idea that I hope I learn something from this? Do you realise what is happening when you open you re Bibles and begin to read them? When you open and read your Bible and begin to read it, God is speaking to you. Have you ever been on holiday somewhere and after a week or two you return to find a few messages on your telephone? Isn t it great to know that people care enough to leave you a message? Well every time you open up the Scriptures to read them, God is saying, I have got a message for you! And when you delete your messages on the telephone the nice little voice says, End of messages. Well let me tell you loved ones that never happens with God s word, God has always got a message for you. In fact the Bible is a message box which is constantly full. When we read the Bible with the idea that God is speaking to me, on a personal level, speaking to me as an individual. We are honoured and that very thought alone should thrill our souls. The very fact that not only did God speak through the Old Testament prophets and later through Jesus Christ Himself. The very fact that we have the Bible which we call, The word of God should be a reason to make any Christian happy and full of joy, despite what s happening in the world around us. And brings me to the 2 nd reason as to why Christians should be happy. John says that The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from sin. 1 John 1:5-2:2 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is 2

not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We saw the last time how sin brings sorrow and suffering and shame with it. We saw how Adam and Eve hid themselves from God in Genesis 3. We saw in Psalm 51 how David lost the joy of his salvation because of sin. We saw how sin caused Peter to weep bitterly in Matthew 26:75. We saw how Judas hanged himself because of sin in Matthew 27. But when a person is saved from, the condemnation, guilt and shame of sin, the outcome is quite different. We saw the last time that the outcome was one of joy, peace and happiness. This was evident in the Eunuch s reactions in Acts 8:39 where he went on his way rejoicing. It was evident in the Philippian jailer s reactions in Acts 16:34 when he was filled with joy Now if you been baptised for the forgiveness of your sins, then you can rejoice in that very fact. 1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. You see your sins being forgiven were nothing to do with the things that you did or do or are going to do. It s all down to Jesus; it s all down to His blood. All the gold and silver of the world cannot redeem you from your sins. All the material riches you can store up on some remote island cannot redeem you from your sins. All the good deeds you can ever do for other people cannot redeem you from your sins. 1 Peter 1:18+19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. The only thing that can redeem you from your sins is the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 2:9 says, But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. And if you go down to Hebrews 9:28, the Hebrew writer tells us that, Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. You can t redeem yourself, no matter how good a person you are. You can t redeem yourself no matter how much you go to church and study the Bible. Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace. And when did this cleansing of sin take place? At your death. For those who were sprinkled as a child I would like to know when they died. All that happened to them when they were babies was they got their hair wet, there was no death because how can you understand when you re a baby what your dying too? A baby is sinless in God s eyes, so there is no need for a death. And for those who believe in faith only for salvation I would like to know when they died. Have you ever heard what they call The sinners prayer? It goes something like this, Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. 3

Now let me ask you where is the sinner s death? Where does the sinner come into contact with the blood of Christ? Because it seems to me that these people who promote this prayer have missed the point of baptism. The forgiveness and cleansing of a Christian s sin takes place at their death. It takes place when they are baptised into Jesus Death. Romans 6:3+4 Don t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Now after our baptism we know we re going to sin again. That s why the power of Christ s blood doesn t just stop at your baptism, it continues with your Christian walk. 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. A Christian is constantly and continually being cleansed by the blood of Christ. Now even though you ve been a Christian for 50 years you still sin, there s not a single honest Christian alive today who wouldn t in their right mind tell you that they are sinlessly perfect. But we do know that if we confess our sins to God, God will forgive us. John tells us in 1 John 1:8-10 that, If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. You see loved ones not only should Christians be happy because God has spoken and continues to speaks to His people through His word. We should be happy in the very fact that Jesus blood cleansed us at our baptism and continues to cleanse us from our sin, if we confess those sins to Him. And that brings me the final reason as to why Christians should be happy. Another reason why Christians should be happy is because A Christian has precious promises from God. Now we all know that a promise is as good as the person who gives it. Tony Blair promised many things in the build up to the general election and no doubt he will break some of those promises. Car insurance companies promise that you will have a replacement car if you wreck your own car within 24hrs, but usually it takes 48hrs. We promise to take our kids to the park or the cinema but we never get around to doing it. I mean people break their promises all the time. We re all as bad as each other when it comes to breaking our promises to people. And that s because we don t see our promises as important. We use promises like mere words to tell people what they want to hear. Promises are no good to anyone unless you fulfil those promises. But aren t you glad that God thinks of His promises as precious? Precious not just to Him because He longs to fulfil those promises but precious to the millions of Christians who hold on to those promises. Peter tells us that God s promises are precious. He tells us in 2 Peter 1:3+4 that His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 4

His promises are not only precious but they are great. They are great because He has promised to hear the prayers of His children. You know there is nothing worse than talking to someone who isn t interested in what you re talking about. My friend often says to me Are you listening to what I m saying? Sometimes when you talk to your kids you think your talking to a brick wall. When you give people advice about life in general and then they just go ahead and ignore what you ve said and you think to yourself What s the point? Well God is not like that, He s interested in what you ve got to say. He cares for you and loves you and wants to help meet your needs, that s why we ask Him for help with this or that. And if it is in accordance with His will, in others words, if it s going to benefit you and His cause, He will answer our prayers. That s what John tells us in 1 John 5:14 that, This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. If God speaks to us through His word then surely we should speak to Him through prayer. If we are His children and He is our Father then surely we can speak to Him with confidence. God is not like mankind, His promises are true and trustworthy, and He has promised that He will hear His children s prayers. Let me show you something else that He has promised Christians. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. No matter what life throws at you, no matter how many trials and temptations you go through, God has promised that it will all come together for the good. You know that s a beautiful verse isn t it? And it s a verse I ve hung on to a lot since I became a Christian. But the truth of the matter is that it is a verse that cannot be understood until after the event. You know when America was hit by terrorists on 9/11; the whole world was in shock. But while the world was in shock I was receiving e-mails from our American brethren saying that something good has come out of this. And when you think about the many people who were murdered on that day, it s hard to see how any good come out of such an event. But do you know what that good was? People starting looking and searching for God again. Church attendance went on the increase, Bible studies were in bigger demand. Now sometimes God allows that to happen in our Christian lives. When we go bankrupt and we haven t got enough money to feed the kids, its then we tend to turn to God for help and He rescues us and blesses us but it s not until after the event that we see that maybe it was for our own good that we stop gambling so much in the bookies. It s not until after the event of going through kidney dialyses that you realise that it was for your own good that stop drinking so heavily. God loves His people and He has promised that everything will work for the good of the people who love Him. And that brings me to the final thing He has promised. John tells us in 1 John 2:25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life. And remember that eternal life is more than eternal existence. Romans 2:7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honour and immortality, he will give eternal life. A faithful Christian is going to live forever with Him. And that promise alone gives me the kind of joy inside that I cannot describe with words. 5

1 Peter 1:8+9 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 6 You see loved ones, a Christian can be happy because God has spoken and continues to speak to His children through His word. A Christian can be happy because of the blood of Jesus which continuously cleanses us from all sin. A Christian can be happy because a Christian can look the future in the eye with confidence and say, I know where I m going. I m going home to my Father who has prepared a place for me, yes even me. And if you re not a Christian this morning, then you need to know that God s promises are still available to you today. And if you decide to die for Jesus Christ by being baptised into His death, then you too can come into contact with His blood and receive the forgiveness of your sins. Then you too can sing with joy as Philip Doddridge did when he wrote. O happy day, that fixed my choice, on thee my Saviour and my God. Well may my glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad. Happy day! Happy day! When Jesus washed my sin away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing everyday. Happy day! Happy day! When Jesus washed my sin away. If after reading this you want to know more about eternal life or if this sermon has raised other questions in your thoughts then please just contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. God bless and thanks for taking the time to grow in your understanding of God s Word.
