The King s Messenger King of Glory Evangelical Lutheran Church ELCA 6012 River Road Flushing, Michigan 48433 Rev. Joyce Johnston, Pastor January, 2017 Proclaiming Christ through Thought, Word, and Deed! From the Desk of Pastor Joyce Prayer and Praying He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. 2 He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. [Luke 11:1-4} Prayer was an important part of Jesus s life. There are many times when Jesus went off by himself to pray. The disciples wanted Jesus to teach them how to pray and that is the context in which the passage above from Luke is found. Jesus told his disciples to pray. St. Paul wrote this in his first letter to the Thessalonians: 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Paul also asked for their prayrs for him, much as we do today in prayer chains. Martin Luther had a few things to say about prayer. In his words: I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer. The fewer the words, the better the prayer. No one can believe how powerful prayer is and what it can affect, except those who have learned it by experience. Whenever I have prayed earnestly, I have been heard and have obtained more than I prayed for. God sometimes delays, but He always comes. The New Year is about to begin. It is a time when many people make resolutions. Let us make an intentional effort to focus on prayer with the assurance that God always hears us and answers our prayers. Your servant in Christ, Pastor Joyce
