PAGE 2 THE MUSTER ROLL SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2003 Garfield Camp Raffle Here is the current information of the raffle of the Sharps Carbine that the Camp has purchased from Brother George Carmer. Brother Graham is using the established checking account at Charter-One Bank for the purpose of receiving raffle ticket money, paying expenses, and the purchase of the rifle from Brother Carmer. All raffle receipts should be sent to Brother Tim Graham at: 118 West Streetsboro Rd #114, Hudson, Ohio 44236, if not already done. The last update from Brother Tim is that the raffle brought in about $****. The tickets were $1.00 a piece or 6 tickets for $5.00 to the public. The Garfield Camp s went national with this raffle. This allowed other Camps to purchase the tickets at a reduced cost and enabled the other Camps to make some money off the raffle. Another benefit was that it will helped us cover a much greater area. The raffle will take place on December 13th, 2003 at the Annual Meeting of the Camp at the Mentor Library. Please have all tickets in before or at the December Meeting!! PAGE 5 THE MUSTER ROLL SEPTEMBER- DECEMBER 2003 March Meeting Minutes Minutes of the October 18, 2003 - Meeting of the James A. Garfield Camp 142 The meeting was called to order at 10:10 am by the Camp Commander, Tom Frye, with the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the September 6, 2003 meeting were read and the corrections were noted. A treasurer s report was not given since the treasurer was not present at the meeting.. The Senior Vice Commander, Brother Ken Freshley, is working on a Camp newsletter and also updating the Department of Ohio website with Camp activities. No report was given by the Jr. Vice Commander since he was not present.. The Patriotic Instructor, Bill Smith gave a presentation about a Civil War sword he recently acquired and the history of that sword. Brother Jon Silvis, Dept. of Ohio Commander gave an update of the formation of a Historical Society at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. Brother Jon outlined the three projects for the coming year undertaken by the Dept. of Ohio: 1. The painting of the 7 th OVI cannons at Woodland Cemetery 2. New plaque and painting of the Spanish American War Cannon on the NW quadrant of Public Square. 3. The installation of the last soldier plaque for Cuyahoga, Lorain and other counties in Ohio. Brother Jon is meeting with other civil war organizations in the area such as round tables, to have a Lincoln Day dinner at Gray s Armory in February with an outside speaker coming. Old Business: Raffle update - Brother Tim Graham was not present; Brother Bill Smith mentioned that Brother Tim went to Zoar Ohio and Fremont, Ohio and had success in selling tickets at both events. Status of the By-Laws update: - tabled until next meeting, no report. Visit from the James A. Garfield Camp No.1. Brother Tom Frye has not heard from the Camp in Baltimore, but will contact them before our next meeting on November 8 to see if they are still coming. Brother Jon was asked to have the Auxiliary provide a light lunch for the next meeting. New Business: Brother Mark Britton, the chairman of the Christmas Fund for the Department of Ohio spoke about the needs at the Ohio Veterans Home for personal items for the veterans living were. The Dept of Ohio will ask for donations of $50.00 from each camp in Ohio. A motion was made to send $50 to the Christmas Fund of the Dept. of Ohio. Brother George Carmer presented the camp with a check for $50 to be used for the Christmas Fund. King, joined ther Sons on October 20, 2003. His address is: 1398 East Ave. Elyria, Ohio 44035-8168 Phone: 440-323-7156 Brother William's Gr.Gr. Grandfather, Joseph King was mustered into service Aug 11, 1862, Company G of the 103rd Ohio Vol. Infantry. He died on November 22, 1862, at the General Hospital in Frankfork, Ky of diarrhoca at the age of 40. This dedication was of a monument to honor the 91 Civil War soldiers buried at a Lake County Cemetery. There are 90 Union and 1 Confederate soldiers resting. The dedication took place at the Willoughby Cemetery, Willoughby, Ohio. In attendance; SUVCW Ohio State Commander, John Silvis and family From the James A. Garfield Camp, Sr. Vice Commander, Ken Freshley, Patriotic Instructor, Bill Smith PCC, Tim Graham PCC and Burdell Waffler (PCC & SUV Life Member) and their families. Others present at the Ceremony were: Members from the 7th, 8th OVI and the 111th PA re-enactor units. Members from the N.E.O.C.W.R.T (NorthEast Ohio Civil War Round Table) including one of our brothers, Robert Battisti. David Anderson, Mayor of Willoughby. A Dedication Ceremony (From page 1) Brent Morgan, President of the East Cuyahoga County Genealogical Society. Each veteran s name was read and the Ohio Bicentennial Bell was pealed for each of the Civil War veterans. Finally, a military rifle salute was given, and then a moving rendition of echoing taps was played. I will post the Names and the Dedication program on the www.ohiosuv.com Website.
