Today we celebrate Pentecost, often known as the church s birthday. The name Pentecost comes from the Greek for fiftieth day. Its origins relate to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem fifty days after Easter. We celebrate today with a festive children s procession.
The congregation is asked to remain prayerfully or meditatively silent during the prelude. The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please utilize the nursery in the basement of Baldwin.
