Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them Please remember the following clergy during the month of April Apr. 2 nd Apr. 4 th Apr. 15 th Apr. 20 th Apr. 24 th Apr. 29 th Apr. 30 th Blessed John Paul II Rev. Leslie D. Cann Deacon Henry Seppanen Rev. Paul Leo Manning Rev. Arthur Flynn Rev. Richard Murphy Rev. John J. Vereb Pope s Prayer Intentions Many people conclude the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and other prayers and devotions by praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. The Ordo lists the papal prayer intentions each month. Parishes are encouraged to publish the papal prayer intentions in their Sunday bulletins. To better know the concrete problems that trouble the Universal Church, especially those of the missions, the Holy Father asks that his monthly intentions be the object of knowledgeable and responsible prayer on the part of the people of God (Ordo). April Intentions General Intention That governments may foster the protection of creation and the just distribution of natural resources. Missionary Intentions That the Risen Lord may fill with hope the hearts of those who are being tested by pain and sickness. Gentle Reminder Lent: Prayer over the People During Lent the Roman Missal includes a Prayer over the People for the Sundays of Lent as well as the weekdays of Lent. Take note that though this prayer is optional on the weekdays of Lent, it is not optional on the Sundays of Lent. Please make sure to include the prayer during the Final Blessing on the Sundays of Lent.

Leccionario The Leccionario de la Misa may enter into use as of Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015 (the first use date). A three-month vacatio legis period will follow, after which the use of the U.S. Leccionario will be mandatory as of Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015 (the must use date). After that time, no other Spanish versions of the Leccionario will be permitted for liturgical use in the United Stated, including the Mexican edition currently in widespread use. USCCB Communications will be the sole publisher of the Leccionario for use in the United States, with an expected delivery date of February 1, 2015. A date for pre-orders will be announced in the near future. Like its English counterpart, the new Leccionario will be published in four volumes. Finally, a Spanish-language Book of the Gospels, the Evangelario, will follow shortly after the publication of the four-volume Leccionario. Misal Romano, Tercera Edición The base text of the Misal Romano, Tercera Edición, together with additional U.S. propers and adaptations, was approved by the body of Bishops at the November 2013 plenary meeting. Because the base text was previously approved in 2012 for the dioceses of Mexico, the USCCB expects a speedy confirmation from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The U.S. Misal Romano will mirror the layout and content of the English-language Roman Missal, Third Edition. It is important to realize that once the Misal Romano has been confirmed and its text fully implemented, no other editions of the Misal Romano will be permitted for liturgical use in the United States. In addition, U.S.-based liturgical publishers will only be permitted to sell the U.S. edition of the Misal Romano, to the exclusion of other countries editions. This is necessary to ensure that liturgical books are uniform in churches throughout the United States. Veiling of Images In the dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from the 5 th Sunday of Lent (April 6 th ) may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the celebration of the Lord s Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil (Ordo, 85). Votive Mass for the First Thursday, First Friday and First Saturday of April During Lent, the special votive Masses offered on the First Thursday of the Month (Christ, the Eternal High Priest), First Friday (Sacred Heart of Jesus) and First Saturday (Immaculate Heart of Mary), are not permitted (Directive #9, Ordo, 247).

What is the proper way to dispose of old Holy Oils? While the revised Code of Canon Law contains specifics on the use of the Holy Oils blessed by the diocesan bishop and distributed at the Chrism Mass, it does not contain explicit instructions for disposal of Holy Oils from the previous year which are being replaced. The Book of Blessings, Chapter 32, Order for the Blessing of a Repository for the Holy Oils, Introduction, paragraph 1127 states: 1127. Each year when the bishop blesses the oils and consecrates the chrism, the pastor should see that the old oils are properly disposed of by burning and that they are replaced by the newly blessed oils. Burning the old oils may be accomplished by burning them in the Easter Fire at the Easter Vigil Mass. It is not fitting that the Holy Oils be burned along with trash or other non- religious refuse. An alternative to burning is burying the unused oils in a sacred place. A fitting place would be on the church grounds. This can be accomplished by digging an appropriate size trench along the foundation of the church. This trench should be at least 12 inches deep and of a size that the oils will not be evident on the surface after the trench is filled. There is no environmental concern as the oils and chrism essence are non-petroleum base and will eventually be absorbed into the ground. If the quantity of oil is so large that burying them on the church ground is not feasible, then an alternative place to bury the oils is a Catholic cemetery near a statue which identifies the cemetery as Catholic or in the area where priests and religious people are buried. A corollary subject is the cleansing of the ambry vessels or other containers that contained the old oils before newly blessed oils are added. Ambry vessels and old containers should be cleansed with hot soapy water to dilute the olive oil and essence of chrism. This soapy water should be emptied into the sacrarium or emptied directly into the ground next to the church in a similar manner and location as recommended for burying old oils. After it appears that all traces of the old oils have been removed, the ambry vessels and containers can be cleansed and dried in a normal fashion. Rev. Alfredo I. Hernández Saint Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary

Fifth Week of Lent (April 7 th April 12 th ) Preface Passion I On Easter Sunday, at Masses with a congregation, the rite of renewal of baptismal promises, used at the Easter Vigil, may take the place of the Creed after the homily. Double Alleluia At Mass, Morning Prayer, and Vespers, throughout the octave, a double alleluia is added to the dismissal and its response (Ordo, 103). Please note that the double alleluia takes place during the octave of Easter and on Pentecost not throughout the Easter season. The Sequence Only the Masses on Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday require the Sequence. The Sequence is to be sung before the Alleluia and the people remain seated. This transforms the Sequence into a more contemplative meditation on the mystery of the day in preparation for the Gospel (GIRM, 64; Newsletter, Committee on Divine Worship, July 2012). Easter Sunday Sequence: Pentecost Sunday Sequence: Victimae paschali laudes Veni, Sancte Spiritus Wednesday, April 23 rd The Feast of Saint George falls within the Octave of Easter so it is not celebrated. As it is the patronal feast of His Holiness, Pope Francis, prayers for the Pope on his feast day may be included in the general intercessions at Mass and in the Hours. Thursday, May 1 st St Joseph the Worker Today is an appropriate day to bless tools or equipment that people use at work. Book of Blessings, nos. 919-941 May 26 th Memorial Day Though today is the obligatory memorial of Saint Philip Neri, in the dioceses of the USA the Mass for Peace and Justice, #22A or B, may be used. It ranks as V 2 R 2 and the bishop has given permission for a special ritual Mass.

Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy) This excerpt from the decree from the Apostolic Penitentiary is provided to help you disseminate proper information regarding the Plenary Indulgence on the Sunday of Divine Mercy. Three conditions for the plenary indulgence And so the Supreme Pontiff, motivated by an ardent desire to foster in Christians this devotion to Divine Mercy as much as possible in the hope of offering great spiritual fruit to the faithful, in the Audience granted on 13 June 2002, to those Responsible for the Apostolic Penitentiary, granted the following Indulgences: a plenary indulgence, granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honour of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!"); A partial indulgence, granted to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation. For those who cannot go to church or the seriously ill In addition, sailors working on the vast expanse of the sea; the countless brothers and sisters, whom the disasters of war, political events, local violence and other such causes have been driven out of their homeland; the sick and those who nurse them, and all who for a just cause cannot leave their homes or who carry out an activity for the community which cannot be postponed, may obtain a plenary indulgence on Divine Mercy Sunday, if totally detesting any sin, as has been said before, and with the intention of fulfilling as soon as possible the three usual conditions, will recite the Our Father and the Creed before a devout image of Our Merciful Lord Jesus and, in addition, pray a devout invocation to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you). If it is impossible that people do even this, on the same day they may obtain the Plenary Indulgence if with a spiritual intention they are united with those carrying out the prescribed practice for obtaining the Indulgence in the usual way and offer to the Merciful Lord a prayer and the sufferings of their illness and the difficulties of their lives, with the resolution to accomplish as soon as possible the three conditions prescribed to obtain the plenary indulgence. Duty of priests: inform parishioners, hear confessions, lead prayers Priests who exercise pastoral ministry, especially parish priests, should inform the faithful in the most suitable way of the Church's salutary provision. They should promptly and generously be willing to hear their confessions. On Divine Mercy Sunday, after celebrating Mass or Vespers, or during devotions in honor of Divine Mercy, with the dignity that is in accord with the rite, they should lead the recitation of the prayers that have been given above.

May 11 th Fourth Sunday of Easter Mother s Day Blessing for Mothers from the Book of Blessings, nos. 1724-1728 Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. May 11 th Fourth Sunday of Easter World Day of Prayer for Vocations Please include a petition for vocations in the General Intercessions and/or pray the Vocations prayer at the end of the General Intercessions. Prayer for Vocations Father, you call each of us by name and ask us to follow you. Bless your Church by raising up dedicated leaders from our families and friends in the Diocese of Palm Beach who will generously serve your people as sisters, brothers, deacons and priests. Inspire us as we grow to know you, and open our hearts to hear your call. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord. Amen.
