Protection from the traps of shaithan Allah tells us in Surah Al A raf about the plots of Shaithan: And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being), then We told the angels, "Prostrate to Adam", and they prostrated, except Iblis (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrate. (Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay." (Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced." (Iblis) said: "Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." (Allah) said: "You are of those allowed respite." (Iblis) said: "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. -!1-

Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)." (Allah) said (to Iblis) "Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all." "And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrong-doers)." Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both." -! 2-

So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?" Shaithan has two kinds of plots ﻏﺮور ﺗﻠﺒﻴﺲ ﻧﻮع اﻟﺠﻬﻞ إﻇﻬﺎر اﻟﺒﺎﻃﻞ ﰲ ﺻﻮرة اﻟﺤﻖ A type of ignorance To disguise the truth with falsehood Both talbees and guroor are actions of shaithan. He plots against some by disguising the truth with falsehood while he deceives others by their ignorance. He is the first one to die # ( ق Iblis said: "I am better ا ر و ## ن ن ## م # ل قت ني # # خ ن ه # # ي ر م # # خ ا ## ال أ ن # talbees with his statement- ني ## ط # ن ## م # ل قت ه # # خ than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay. ). Allah commanded him to prostrate to Adam, but with this statement- he put a covering over the command of Allah. Though his statement is true- he is made of fire while and Adam is ا ## # # # ( أ ن I am better created from clay, he is rejecting the truth with his false statement- ن ه # # # # # ي ر م # # # # # خ than him (Adam)). Shaithan and the one with knowledge do talbees- these falsehood to cover the truth and fulfill their desire. The one without knowledge cannot do talbees. When the command of Allah comes to us, then we need to accept it irrespective of the means through which it reached us because it is from Allah. Shaithan is rejecting the command smartly by giving logical reasons. Anybody who has knowledge can also do this action. For example, when one gives advice he needs to really account himself that he is not using the ayat and Hadith to fulfill his desire. Make it clear from the start- why am I saying this?. We need to be especially careful when we speak about ول ## # # # # رس ## # # # # ال ال ## # # # # ال اهلل وق ## # # # # ;ق I.e., the Qur an and the sunnah, to have taqwa and not speak out of desire. -! 3-

Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both." So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?" Allah has showered us with blessings, yet shaithan tricks us by putting the magnifying glass on the one matter that is not allowed. Here he said to Adam - Do you know why Allah forbade you from that one tree?. He tricks them by playing on their ignorance and telling them what they want- which is to be angels or to be immortal. He claims that he wants only the good for them but he is deceiving them. The one who really wants to advice will not simply make claims, instead he will just advice. Shaithan will come to a person based on the person s wishes. Adam wanted this but he was ignorant and shaithan deceived him. All of this is deception- he tells them other matters without knowledge to make him slip. We don t want to do either to people- neither deceive others nor disguise the truth and show something contrary than the truth. -! 4-

Shaithan goes to a person based on whether he is asleep or awake. The more a person is heedless, the more shaithan will attack and affect him. Shaithan is our clear, open enemy so we cannot be relaxed. He attacks us from the front, back, left and right. Real relaxation is only in paradise. The disbelievers are relaxed in duniya- eating and enjoying as Allah tells us in Surah Al Hijr: Leave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know! As long as we are alive, we cannot be relaxed. Be cautious, be aware, be careful of even your thoughts. When the believer dies, he is relaxed from the trials of the duniya. But when the disbeliever dies, then he goes to the hardship. The more you are cautious in life, the more security Allah will give you on the Day of Judgement. Ibn Al Jawzi explained this scenario. There is the heart, the intellect, the Angels, the Shayatheen and the guard. Imagine, there is a fortress in the middle, with a wall with doors around it and a quarters outside. The heart is the fortress, the intellect is between the fortress and the walls. The heart needs a lot of protection. Why? Because it is the place of love and magnification of Allah. Our heart is precious, you don t want any shirk, sins or shayatheen in the heart. Allah deals with you according to your heart. If your heart changes, then your situation changes. It is the king and leader. The walls around have cracks and these are our weaknesses. Have taqwa, don t show others your weaknesses. The angels give good thoughts between the intellect and the heart. The intellect takes command from the Qur an and sunnah. The desires are outside in the quarters and they always have an open door for the shaithan. Desires are the bride of the shaithan. When we react based on our weaknesses and feelings, it shows we gave shaithan and our desires entry to our heart. Push them away by using your intellect with the Qur an and sunnah. Don t let your intellect be on sleep modealways be alert otherwise your desires and shatihan will slip into your heart through the cracks of your weaknesses. Knowledge is the guard for your fortress. It is responsible for guarding your heart. Have taqwa for your heart and knowledge for your intellect. The light of your fortress is the remembrance of Allah ( ر اهلل ## # # # # # )ذك. You need faith to make your heart glow. There are mirrors inside this fortress and this shows a transparent heart. Don t let any other picture enter your heart. -!5-
