~ 9 ~ Fighting Against Our Gifts Opening the Door by Madisyn Taylor Continually fighting against your gifts may bring about a louder knock at your door that you won't welcome. As human beings we often have a tendency to fight against using our natural gifts. Many stories of success start with an individual who is ignoring the call of his or her inborn abilities. There are many possible reasons for this resistance, from fear that the calling will be too difficult to a disbelief in the very work one is being asked to do. We may feel too small, too distracted by other people s ideas about what we should do, or too uninformed. Whatever the case, the resistance to actualizing ourselves has very concrete consequences, and many of us have been called out of hiding by an illness or a twist of fate that unequivocally dismantled our resistance. In other the words, the universe knocks, and if we don t answer it knocks louder. For example, if you are meant to be a psychic or a medium, and you aren t using that gift, you may get headaches. If you are meant to be a healer and are trying to be a lawyer, you may have trouble getting or keeping a job. This doesn t mean that you can t still be a lawyer, but perhaps integrating your gifts into your work is what is calling you. On the other hand, you may simply feel an underlying anxiety that you are not on the right path, doing the right thing. Pay attention to this feeling, and ask for guidance from the universe, being open to all its communications, from subtle internal yearnings to powerful dreams. As you begin to risk opening the door to your natural gifts, your life situation may shift in a powerful way. However, you may find that small steps in the right direction, such as taking a class or setting aside one night a week to paint or write, is enough for now. The first step on the journey to our calling in life is to listen to our internal voices and respond to the knocking universe at the door. As we do, the symptoms and anxieties that have haunted us will fade into the background, replaced by opportunities, both big and small, to open the door to what we are truly here to do.

~ 10 ~ Mabon By Tessa Piontek Mabon is the second harvest festival and occurs on the autumn equinox, which falls this year on Sept. 23. It is also known as Harvest Home, Alban Elfred among Celts and Druids, or Foghar in Ireland. It is the time when the harvest is at its fullest and most abundant. Summer fruits and vegetables are still producing and fall crops are beginning to come in. September is most noted for being apple season and who doesn t enjoy a day at the cider mill with fresh squeezed apple cider, and warm apple pie or bread? Now is the harvest of fruit, of apples and grapes. As such, this is also a celebration of wine as last year's crop has been cured to perfection and is now able to be drunk to celebrate the new harvest of grapes and other wine-making fruits. It was a time of harvest and wine-fueled revelry as people, standing still on the precipice of winter s chill, took stock of once vibrant fields. After reaping the harvest, entire communities would cast off the burden of work and celebrate by drinking, making music, and creating art. Keeping with the theme of balance, it was also a day to journey inward, and to prepare for upcoming changes by initiating them through meditation. This is the day that light and darkness balance each other. The nights begin to lengthen and will now be longer than the days, the chill of autumn is in the air, and we may occasionally see leaves beginning to change color. As light and darkness are in balance, the sun enters the astrological sign of Libra, which is the sign of scales and balance. Libra is the 7th sign of the zodiac, and at this point, we begin to see a shift. While the first six signs focus on the individual, the last six focus on our dealings with others and how we relate to them. Those born in Libra epitomize balance, harmony, and fair play. Libras are artistic, stylish, and enjoy creating a beautiful world. They enjoy being around others, and are all about partnerships and groups. In Greek mythology, today is the day that Persephone must return to the Underworld, and join her husband Hades. Her mother, goddess of the earth, Demeter, must let her daughter die so she can return to be Queen in the Realm of the Dead. Demeter mourns for her beloved daughter, and the trees shed their leaves to match her tears. Demeter goes into a severe depression, and with her all living creatures, are now frozen in snow by her sadness. But no worries, she will reunite with her daughter in spring when she will reincarnate enabling nature to bud again. And in Middle Earth, at the Shire, on the Equinox, both Bilbo and Frodo were born. That is what lead the American Tolkien Society to declare back in 1978, that Hobbit Day be celebrated on September 22nd, the Equinox. Autumn is a time for reflection and taking stock of what you have done so far this year, and what still needs to be done to prepare for winter. What seeds did you plant last spring and have they bloomed and flourished? My grandmother called this time of year the wintering in - the time to pile up a stock of books, fill one s root cellar, put wool blankets on the beds, and be prepared for whatever was to come. - Susan Moonwriter Pesznecker, at Witches & Pagans magazine. This is also a perfect time for contemplation, meditation, and planning. We need to plan not only for our physical comfort and well-being, but also spiritually, and emotionally. Examine what needs to be done before winter sets in and find the balance you need in your life to be happy and content.
