Y i t z c h a k By Rabbi Sender Haber We find a strange birthday party in this week s parsha. On the day that Yitzchak began to eat food Avraham invited all of the holiest people of the generation to come together and celebrate. This custom is hard to understand and certainly hasn t caught on. The Gemara in Pesachim tells us that this was not a onetime event. When Moshiach comes, Hashem will make a meal for the holiest individuals of all generations and it will mirror that meal at Yitzchak s second birthday. We do find one other meal that is associated with Yitzchak. Before blessing Eisav, Yitzchak asked that he bring a meal for him to eat. As a matter of fact, we are told that Yitzchak loved Eisav because of the meals that he would bring him. Perhaps the answer lies in a Gemara in Shabbos. We are told that Hashem went to Avraham and let him know that his grandchildren, the Jewish people, were behaving badly and would be destroyed. Avraham said, Go for it if that is your will. Hashem was still reluctant (so to speak) so he consulted Yaakov. Yaakov too said, Go for it if that is your will. Finally Hashem went to Yitzchak. Yitzchak disagreed. Are they my children? he asked, and not yours? Besides, most of their lives are spent sleeping and eating. How many sins could they have actually committed? Rav Tzadok Hakohein writes all of these associations of food with Yitzchak are no accident. From the very first moment that Yitzchak began to partake of the food in this world, he brought the holiest of people to the meal; to show that every bite that we partake of in this meal can be holy. Even the most mundane people and things have a purpose that can be either ignored or fulfilled. That is how Yitzchak saw potential in Eisav. It is also how he was able to stick up for a people that Hashem himself had vowed to destroy.
