From the Desk of.. Bernadette Zamora Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 8, 2017 Have no anxiety at all (Phil 4:6). Today s reading is a reminder of how we should live our lives. The landowner planted grapes. We, like the seeds planted in the vineyard, are good. God created each one of us with the capability of being good. It is up to us to nurture that goodness with the word of God. If we do not, our goodness will be hidden with anger, bitterness and hate. It is very easy to give in to despair when things are difficult in life; it then becomes easy to believe that God has turned away from us, that we are no longer worthy of God s grace and to give up and quit going to church. This is when we begin to lose the person that God created us to be. Life is not always going to be easy. Jesus never promised prosperity and wealth. He promised eternal life. In order to gain eternal life, it is important to remain faithful to God, even when things are not as good as we would like them to be. The second reading is a guide for us when things are difficult. Just as it is easy to give in to despair when we go through difficult times, it is very easy to praise God and be thankful when everything in life is going well. The second reading reminds us that we should be thankful in everything. When our health is failing, when we lose a job or are not able to work due to circumstances, these are the times that we must remain faithful. It is difficult to be happy when everything is going wrong, when it seems as everything in life is not as we thought it would be. We must hold on to whatever is pure, good and gracious. Even in difficult times, the flowers grow, the sun shines, and the birds sing. We must hold onto these things. This is what helps us to remain faithful to God. The Gospel reading reflects the first reading about the owner of a vineyard. In the Gospel, Jesus is referring directly to the leaders of the Jews. They were supposed to be teaching the love of God and being an example to the Jews. Instead, they chose to be so concerned with the Law that they forgot the purpose of the law, to be close to God. The Kingdom is given to those who remain faithful to God, to those who live their lives as the example to others and who help those in need. This week as you go about your day, take time to reflect on the goodness of God. Even if you are having a bad day and things are not going well. Look around and look for the reminders that are all around that God loves you. Please remember that modesty, respect and good judgment in your choice of dressing is very important when attending mass or other church services. Dresses, skirts and shorts should be near the knee. Off the shoulder or low cut dresses or blouses, tank tops, muscle shirts and tight fitting clothes are a sign of disrespect to the church.
