Fall Wednesday Evening Activities Resume Wednesday, September 7th @ 5:00 PM From the Pastor's Desk Christian character is produced by the Holy Spirit indwelling in us, not by any kind of self effort. What is natural to the sin nature we have living in the flesh is: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, factions, seditious heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and things like these. They who do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God (the lack of blessings or rewards). But the present activity of the Spirit (fruit) is love, joy peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and selfcontrol Galatians 5:19 23. If you sit through one broadcast of the evening news, you may be like me and hope for at least just a few minutes of relief by the work of God s Spirit in the lives of people. A visitor to a hospital saw workmen hauling materials for a new building. Among them was a man with a wheelbarrow, but turned upside down. When the visitor asked him why he had it upside down, he replied: If I had it turned up, they would fill it. One of the causes of emotional instability accompanying neurosis is refusing responsibility. One loses all sense of mastery or the inward working of control. In Scripture there are many lists and among them the list of the fruits of the spirit we ve mentioned above. Often a list ends with a retrospective word or phrase. Such is the list of Galatians 5. Self-control is the last in this list. It covers everything above it. The lack of self-control leaves the door wide open to living in the flesh. Allowing the Holy Spirit of God to empower our lives builds the characteristics of God into the framework of our very existence those traits that bring much needed relief in a world of flesh living. The absence of the Holy Spirit is very noticeable, even more so in the lives of those who call themselves Christians. Bro. Bobby
