ministry planning guide 2007 NEW EVENTS with Priscilla Shirer KAY ARTHUR on a richer prayer life A WOMAN S HEART Beth Moore s first study updated www.lifeway.com/women

Women s Ministry at LifeWay seeks to: EQUIP women in your church to enrich the lives of other women and their families through Christ. ENABLE a woman to discover her God-given gifts for ministry, search out the needs in her church and community, and match those needs with her gifts for ministry. LEAD women to accept Christ as Lord, to become women of deep prayer, and to study the Bible and base their entire lives on the Word of God.

Meet our LifeWay Women s Team Bottom row left to right: Carol Mills, Internet Producer, Women s Ministry; Pam Case, Strategist, Women s Ministry; Faith Whatley, Director, Women s Ministry; Teresa Jenkins, Administrative Assistant to Faith Whatley; Chris Adams, Women s Ministry/Ministers Wives Specialist; Dale McCleskey, Editor-and-Chief for Undated Resources, Leadership and Adult Publishing Top row, left to right: Lynne Weaver, Lead Product Development Specialist, Publishing Services and Multimedia; Christa Horton, Author Relations Specialist, Women s Ministry; Paige C. Greene, Director of Women s Events; Andrea Moore, Market Analyst, LifeWay Church Resources Dear Women s Ministry Leader: The Women s Ministry Team at LifeWay is so honored to serve each of you as leaders. Our prayer is that this Women s Planning Guide becomes a helpful tool for you and your team as you make decisions about how to reach the women in your church. We understand that each church we serve is unique and that each woman has distinct needs. Our Women s Ministry Team also cares deeply about women and their spiritual growth. We are charged with looking at the trends of women, while looking toward the future to provide solutions that meet your needs as a leader, as our culture changes, and as the lives of women change. We have prayed, cried, and celebrated this year as God continues to bless this ministry. One of the most exciting things we want to share with you is our ability to provide digital downloads from some of our most popular Bible studies. (See page 18.) Instead of your women getting behind in their studies because they missed a class, now they can go to lifeway.com/women, click on downloads, and view sessions individually for a small fee. Look for many new resources to be added to our women s Web site. Be sure you get to know Priscilla Shirer, the author of in-depth Bible studies as well as a powerful speaker at our new Going Beyond enrichment events. (see pages 5 and 51.) We are thrilled to partner with Priscilla, a straight-up Bible teacher, daughter of Tony Evans, wife of Jerry Shirer, and mother of two precious little boys. Priscilla understands what it is like to juggle life s demands, but she is also dedicated to presenting the Word in a fresh and captivating way. Priscilla will challenge you to grow in your walk and envisions revival in the hearts of women and churches through these national events. We would love to hear about significant ministries that you find are reaching women in a new way, so please feel free to get in touch with us and share your story! Thank you for looking to LifeWay Women for your biblical solutions for life. Women s Ministry Team LifeWay Christian Resources www.lifeway.com/women 1

At home with the Shirers It s a typical Wednesday morning at the Shirer home in Dallas, and like any other mother of two young children, Priscilla is on the run early. After a 3-mile jog, she s back before the men in her life open their sleepy eyes. Then the rest of the morning whizzes by as she does her best to keep everybody fed, dressed, and loved. Two-year-old J.C. and 4-year-old Jackson play under Priscilla s watchful eye. Then, about 1 p.m., Priscilla and her husband, Jerry, make the great switch-off. Jerry wraps up his morning business calls and e-mails to care for the kids so that Priscilla can make the trek to her office (the kitchen table). There Priscilla studies Scriptures, writes, listens, prays, and prepares for the coming weekend when she ll stand before hundreds, maybe even thousands of women to teach the message God has given to her. Jerry and Priscilla are truly partners in every aspect of life. Priscilla says, We run interference for each other all day with the kids. So many husbands would be like, The children are your thing, not mine. But not Jerry. He s excited and serious about me and the kids. And I m so grateful for that. I believe, and have from the first time that I heard Priscilla, that she is anointed. She is so real, so transparent, so understandable, and so spiritually in-depth. Out of the heart flows the issues of life and that her heart is after God s own heart. Shelia West, The Villages, Florida He Speaks to Me: Preparing to Hear from God by Priscilla Shirer Priscilla Shirer leads participants on an exciting adventure in discovering how God spoke to the boy Samuel, how in the Old Testament he responded, and how God speaks to believers today. Jerry & Priscilla with sons J.C. and Jackson Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks by Priscilla Shirer How do you distinguish God s voice from all the ones in your world and in your head? Introducing a new Bible study for women, Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks. In this six-session interactive study, author Priscilla Shirer draws insight from the Scripture and provides practical steps for knowing the voice of God. Through print and video messages, you ll learn to recognize God s character, language, and tone of voice as you spend time in His Word and understand the role of the Holy Spirit. As a result, you ll find that you more easily recognize His voice, as well as discern the voices of strangers. Discerning the Voice of God Member Book includes personal thoughts from authors such as Max Lucado, Philip Yancey, Tony Evans, Kathy Troccoli, Nancy Leigh Demoss, Henry Blackaby, and Beth Moore. SPIRITUAL GROWTH Fingerprints of God: Recognizing God s Touch on Your Life by Jennifer Rothschild This interactive Bible study exposes the wonder of God s touch upon our lives. Participants will discover that when they experience God s touch, they will recognize six things: honor, intimacy, shelter, guidance, redemption, and refinement. And just like clay in the skilled hands of a potter, God s touch molds us and shapes us from glory to glory. Encouraging, practical, engaging, and challenging, this study communicates Jennifer s personal experience in receiving and giving the touch of God. (7 sessions) Member Book 001266229 $10.95 Leader Kit (Member Book, leader helps, and two DVDs) 001266228 $149.95 To view video and workbook segments, and to download free promotional helps, visit www.lifeway.com/fingerprints. Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark by Jennifer Rothschild A powerful study, Jennifer shares how God has used her physical blindness to give her spiritual vision, teaching her to walk by faith and trust Him when the way seems dark. With signature wit and wisdom, Jennifer encourages women to take risks instead of playing it safe; give God control rather than trying to remain in control; persevere through hardship instead of quitting; receive God s gifts instead of rejecting His goodness; be guided by truth rather than trusting feelings; and seek God instead of seeking deliverance from difficulty. (7 sessions) Member Book (Includes leader guide) 001220714 $10.95 Leader Kit [w/english subtitles] (Member Book and two DVDs featuring group video sessions, plus bonus content) 001220715 $149.95 Visit Jennifer at www.jenniferrothschild.com. Our women s Bible study group at church is going through Jennifer Rothschild s excellent study, Walking by Faith. We all have to walk by faith, don t we? When you re part of a military family, that feeling of walking by faith is sometimes even stronger because you have to walk a lot of steps with nothing to guide you but the next step. SPIRITUAL GROWTH Daniel: Lives of Integrity, Words of Prophecy All NEW Video Content! Updated edition of A Woman s Heart: God s Dwelling Place Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Exodus 25:8 Her first video-driven Bible study with LifeWay, it has formed the foundation for all of the Bible studies Beth Moore has done since. So on the 10th anniversary of the original study Beth revisited the tabernacle. She taught the study afresh on video and edited the print study for the new release. The updated edition of A Woman s Heart: God s Dwelling Place reflects not only the original study, but also all that God has done in Beth s life in the past decade. Taken primarily from the Book of Exodus, this dynamic video series will take you on a fascinating journey into why God would choose to live in a wilderness tabernacle, made by human hands. Women will be drawn to pick up and examine every article, so carefully crafted with detailed instructions from the Creator, and discover that God desires to live among His people, and to dwell in our hearts. Getting to know SPIRITUAL GROWTH the editors of the Women s Evangelical Commentary Series Dorothy Kelley Patterson ter and Rhonda Harrington Kelley Q Qh QWh Why a commentary for women? What sets this resource eapart from all the others available? th od s Word and solid -t om n ex osit not s interpret the tex Christian women today are searching for truths in God s Word and need solid biblical resources. The contributors ors to this commentary have a passion for woman-to-woman exposition and do not seek to interpret the text through h the gender lens. For women serious about Bible study, commentaries are essential, ent and this volume augments Bible study in these ways: Challenges women to make a systematic journey through the Scriptures in search of God s truth Gives women an opportunity to receive clear biblical exposition prepared by women with formal training in theological and biblical studies Shows how to find biblical solutions to life s problems Qan QCan a you describe some of the contributors and their qualifications? The team of women includes seasoned expositors with formal theological training, with experience in teaching Greek and New Testament, and with publications in academic journals and books. In addition, the writers include young women who have recently completed their training in biblical studies, and who approach the task of biblical exposition with excellent academic preparation as well as enthusiasm. Qs QAs co-editors, what was your most challenging task? The greatest challenge we faced was to assemble a team of women who were academically and theologically prepared for explanation of the text, which called for preparation in both the Greek language and formal New Testament studies. We were looking for a team of women whose walk matched their talk and we also considered the need to have women from different geographical areas, women from different seasons of life, and women from a variety of ministries. Qle QPle Please give us an example of how this commentary could be used by women. The most important way for women to use this commentary is to assist them in studying the Bible. Every woman should and can study God s Word for herself whether she is doing so for personal edification, for preparing to teach the Bible to other women, or for an understanding of one particular passage. Included is an article on How to Study the Bible, which addresses pertinent questions. Women s Evangelical Commentary: New Testament helps women respond to an inquisitive child, help a struggling friend, or satisfy personal curiosity. Qh QWh What s next in this series? n r The one-volume commentary on the New Testament is to be followed by a single volume Old Testament commentary, already in the editorial process, as is the Study Bible for Women. Future releases will include commentaries on specific books of the Bible as well as topics such as biblical womanhood, counseling women, how to study the Bible, communication from the public platform, hospitality, and missionary education. Qn QOn a more personal note, what are your favorite Scripture verses and why? Dorothy: Since my childhood, my life verse has been Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths. These verses seem to encompass the Christian life. There is a clear warning to avoid making my decisions based on my own personal preferences and logic, while looking to the Lord not just with a loving glance but with my heart set on determining what He wants for my life. Rhonda: I have also claimed Proverbs 3:5-6 as a life verse. In recent years, God has used His promise in Isaiah 41:10 to strengthen and help me when I become overwhelmed and fearful. I can trust Him daily to care for me as I face personal challenges, make hard decisions, and manage many responsibilities. My God has always been my strength and will always be my help. 14 To order, visit it www.lifeway.com, call 1.800.458.2772, or visit the LifeWay Christian Store serving you.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH Kelly Minter QQ. What has been your most intense encounter with Q Getting to know Q Q Q Q God in the past year? It seems the Lord has been doing a new thing in my life as spoken of in the Book of Isaiah. The past several months have been a sweet season of new opportunities and work that I ve dreamed of for a long time. I ve had the privilege of leading worship, teaching a Bible study for young women, working on a few books, developing deeper friendships, and enjoying the city where God has placed me. Q. Describe a lesson you re learning from God right now that you d like to pass along to other women. I m learning to make room for God by the choices I make. Right now I m writing a Bible study for LifeWay that deals with the modern-day idols in our lives. When we choose to turn from them or to dismantle them we are actually creating room for God to move and dwell. It s been a new concept for me as I ve looked more deeply at the why behind turning from my everyday false gods. Ultimately, it s for the sake of making room for the One True God to dwell in my life. Q. Name a favorite characteristic of God. Faithful. Q. Who were you in high school (popular, athletic, shy, boy-crazy)? I was athletic. I played basketball and loved it. It s probably one of the only things I miss about high school. If I could go play a game right now, I would. Q. Where do you feel out of control? In relationships, because there is no controling the other person. You can t control their beliefs, responses, time, trust, moods, etc. If I m going to feel out of control, it s usually in this context simply because no one can nor should control another. Q. If you had more time in the day, what would you do? I would build stuff and/or restore houses. I love working with my hands. I love to paint, plaster, hammer, seal, stain, drill, and build. I don t know a lot, but I love what I ve learned so far and wish I had more time to tinker. No Other Gods: Confronting Our Modern-Day Idols by Kelly Minter Kelly Minter Words like false gods and idols can seem terribly removed from our twenty-first century. But what if those terms suddenly meant your house, a relationship, a dream, a drug, sex, shopping, children, or even your own sense of spirituality? Anything that replaces God in our lives even things that are seemingly innocent can become little g gods that cannot save or heal. Much worse, they keep us from the one, true God who longs for us to be satisfied in Him so He can be glorified. No Other Gods is the first installment of small-group Bible studies entitled The Living Room Series. This study is distinctly relational. Kelly invites you to become part of her group, where friends share time, dinner, music, recipes, musings, and mostly their lives. Though the studies can be done in a church, they are best designed for a home setting. In this first release individuals will work together to identify and dethrone false gods while drawing near to the God who longs to save us from all substitutes. (8 sessions) 005035500 $12.95 19

Linda Getting to know Linda Schultz Anderson QQWha Qt What WhQat has been your most intense encounter with God in the past year? Due to a bad stress test and strange symptoms, last summer I found myself having a cardiac catheterization. As I lay there with the cardiologist exploring every nook and cranny of my heart, I was more alert than I was supposed to be (due to an infiltrated IV), and I found myself thinking about Psalm 139:23-24 and pondering what God sees when He probes the depths of my heart. Scary thoughts and yet, thanks to Jesus, reassuring. When the cardiologist pronounced my heart clean and clear, I realized how deeply I want to keep my heart clean and clear before God. QQDescr Qr Describe DQcr a lesson you re learning from God right now. That He is enough actually more than enough for whatever we walk through in life. My Mom is battling metastasized breast cancer, and I m learning daily the reality of what she taught me long ago: God doesn t give us grace ahead of time, but just as we need it, day by day, hour by hour. QName Qe NQme a favorite characteristic of Jesus. His radical (for His time) perspective on women. He taught them, engaged them in conversation, and used examples and parables from their world. I love how He met each individual woman just where she was and loved her into the Kingdom. QWho Qo WhQw were you in high school? (popular, atheletic, shy, boy-crazy?) I was very involved in all kinds of activities studies, sports, student leadership even teaching piano. I was not at all domestically inclined. So when, by some fluke, I won an award as Betty Crocker Future Homemaker (Anyone remember those? This was a long time ago!), the entire class burst out laughing I never could even thread a sewing machine and didn t like to cook. QWhere Qere WhQr do you feel out of control? When I let worry and fear take over (I have a son who s a Marine pilot and a daughter living abroad in Ireland plus I m a new grandmother!). I tend to be a gifted worrier. I think the 366 Fear not verses in the Bible were written for me as Lloyd Ogilvie has pointed out, that s one for every day of the year, even leap year! QIf Qu Qou you had more time in the day, what would you do? LIFE ISSUES Actually, I d go for more days in the year so I could spend more time with my children and grandchildren. We re spread out all over the country and beyond and I just never get to see enough of my family. Linda Schultz Anderson Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139: 23-24, Holman Christian Standard Bible 20

LIFE ISSUES Discover The Joy of Doing Less Many Christian women, swallowed up in an endless array of duties, responsibilities, and service, miss out of God s best for them. This plethora of activity often steals their creativity, their playtime, their joy, and leaves them physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually depleted. God has a beautiful invitation to all who find themselves caught up in the lifestyle of too many things to do with not enough time to do them. Through Isaiah, God issues an invitation to all who are too busy to enjoy His peace and joy: Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters Seek the Lord while He may be found; call to Him while He is near. For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways. Isaiah 55: 1a, 6, 8 HCSB If you re anxious, pressured, or depleted by the demands placed on your life right now, God has something better in mind for you. Too little time is not the problem. The core of the problem may be having too much to do! And through accepting the invitation of the Lord to come to Him, He will give you his thoughts about the scheduling of your time. God does not want you to do every good thing. That s why you must check His thinking and seek His counsel in everything you do. For me, the revelation about what should occupy my days comes in my quiet time as I pray over each item on my daily schedule. More than once, He has impressed me to strike something off my list. I believe God wants us to learn to enjoy His fellowship at a more relaxed pace. For some reason, we busy women equate being busy for God as being productive for Him. But He is showing me that I m more productive when I m less busy and more relaxed. Check your life. Are you overcommitted? Take time with the Lord to seek His direction. And remember, making sure you re less busy will help you have more time for sitting at God s feet, and that s to your advantage. From Frazzled Female by Cindi Wood, HomeLife March 2007 issue. INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDIES Welcome home! What s next for the soldier s family? Tony Rankin, clinical therapist and father of an active-duty Marine, says the key to reentry is anticipation, expectation, and realism. The most necessary response is empathy. Envision what life has looked like from both perspectives. Here s how military couples can make life less stressful when the service member returns home: Talk about expectations before the service member actually comes home. If the children are old enough, include them in these conversations, when appropriate. Don t bury unresolved issues. Problems that were present before deployment will likely still need focus. Talk about how and when the returning service member will take over certain responsibilities. Be prepared to take things slowly to avoid friction. Be willing to understand and adjust to change after a deployment. Both service members and spouses have changed somewhat, so be flexible. Give the returning soldier time and space to readjust to life at home; especially when the person is coming out of a very dangerous environment. Rankin offers this analogy: Welcoming a returning soldier home is like bringing a new fish home from the pet store. Every good aquatic store will instruct you to take the fish home in the plastic bag and to place the fish and the bag in the fish tank. Allow the fish to float until it can become acclimated to the tank temperature. Then, and only then, should the fish be released into its new environment. Here s the parallel: Your loved one needs a chance to get used to being home. He or she needs to have minimal demands initially (remember where the soldier has just come from: an environment of orders and demands), and when he or she gets acclimated, celebrate and let normal life begin. INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDIES What are inductive studies? By definition, inductive studies use the Bible as the main source of information about the Bible and its meaning. This content-driven approach to Bible study helps answer these questions: Content. What does it say? Answers questions like Who? What? When? Where? How? Discovery. What does it mean? Is there a lesson, a promise, a command, a warning, or an example good or bad? What can you learn about God? Application. What does it mean to me? What should I do with what I have discovered? Enjoy: A Thirst-Quenching Look at Philippians by Tianne Moon This verse-by-verse look at Philippians helps all women develop the habit of Bible study by introducing them to study tools and encouraging them to apply those tools to their study. LEADERSHIP AND TRAINING really important What is in ministry? best? What is Do you ever ask yourself that as a leader? As a woman? Chris Adams by Chris Adams, Women s Ministry/Ministers Wives Specialist God has used several things in my life this past year to cause me to ask those questions: My mom s health has quickly deteriorated this past year, and I realize how short time really is, and that we never know how long we will be able to function at our present level The death of a sweet co-worker over the Christmas holidays at the end of 2005 she impacted so many for the Kingdom in such a short life A slow down during the spring due to foot surgery gave me time to really reflect on my life, my family, and the ministry God had called me to Mid-Life which happens! A half-milestone birthday reminded me that time marches on A book by Dale Hanson Bourke, Second Calling, provided another wake up call to make sure the second half of my life counts A recent chapel led by new LifeWay President Dr. Thom Rainer entitled, Counting the Days is based on these Scriptures: Lord, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how transitory I am. You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Psalm 39: 4-6. In summary, Dr. Rainer stated: Live with the awareness of the brevity of life God is in control of our lives We are called to make a difference in this life Each of these incidents caused me to re-evaluate my life and once again reassess my calling. Am I living each day in faithfulness, investing in the best, and doing what has eternal value? How am I living today to impact the Kingdom? Am I showing hope to the lost and hope to the saved feeling hopeless? Would you join me as I ask these questions each day: What am I putting off? What am I doing I should not be doing? What am I not doing I should be doing? Where can I make a difference in someone s life today? As Beth Moore stated in her recent Bible study, Daniel: Lives of Integrity, Words of Prophecy: I want a heart that burns with fiery passion for Christ and for a world He came to save. I want to take my place in the times to which I ve been entrusted. Don t you? Let us as women s leaders shout YES, LORD! 32

Healthy food Photo? Eat Smarts Move Over Meat, Make Way for Mushrooms As you gear up for cookouts, consider trying a portobello mushroom burger in place of beef. These large, firm-textured, mushrooms are low in calories, fat, and carbs, but are packed full of high-quality protein, cholesterol-lowering fiber, and disease-fighting antioxidants. In fact, a recent study by Penn State researchers found that portobello mushrooms are rich in ergothioneine, a unique substance produced by fungi that has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties and to protect cells within the human body. This study affirms many others that have shown mushrooms may help prevent various types of cancer, including prostate and breast cancer. Though eating fungi may not sound appetizing, a grilled portobello can be a delicious alternative to your typical burger. Lightly brush the caps of the mushrooms with olive oil or cooking spray and your favorite spices, cook both sides until tender, and enjoy on a whole-wheat bun topped with healthy fixin s. Scoop Up Super Foods Daniel and his friends definitely had the right idea when they asked the Babylonian guards to feed them vegetables and water for better health (Dan. 1). According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, six of today s super foods are fruits and vegetables. While there are technically no bad foods, here are 10 foods that have amazing health benefits. They re all low in fat and sugar and high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, and healthy carbohydrates. 1. Sweet potatoes 2. Grape tomatoes 3. Skim (fat-free) or 1 percent milk 4. Blueberries 5. Wild salmon 6. Crispbreads (whole-grain rye crackers) 7. Brown rice 8. Citrus fruits 9. Butternut squash 10. Dark, leafy greens (e.g. kale and spinach) For more information about these super foods, go to www.cspinet.org HomeLife, March 2007 Beat-the-Heat Foods by Branda Polk As the temperature continues to climb this summer so does the desire for foods that are cold, light, and refreshing. When the urge for cold food strikes on the hottest days of the year, and you really want more flavor than chewing on ice cubes, be prepared with these healthier, higher nutrition options that will satisfy any flavor craving and help to lower your body temperature. Chilled Fruit Chilled fruit from the refrigerator is a delicious and healthy way to keep your mouth cool in the summer. Great chilled options include melons of any flavor, red or green grapes, berries, peaches, plums, apricots, and summer apples. Chill the fruit for about an hour before eating. Enjoy chilled fruit after a workout, after completing yard work, or as a light dessert. Frozen Fruit You can freeze your own fruit blend or purchase frozen fruit from the grocery store. Grapes are delicious straight from the freezer. Create your own frozen fruit treats by blending a variety of fresh, frozen, or canned fruit in a blender until smooth, then pouring the blend into a shallow dish and freezing it until solid. Scoop the frozen fruit blend with an ice cream scoop and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint leaves. Frozen Yogurt Place a container of regular yogurt in your favorite flavor in the freezer for two or three hours. Try the fat-free, sugar-free version of yogurt; this delicious frozen treat is high in calcium and low in fat and sugar. Smoothies and Slushies For a refreshing smoothie, combine fat-free, sugarfree vanilla yogurt, ½ cup of non-fat milk, and a blend of your favorite frozen fruit in a blender and blend until smooth. Bananas, berries, mangos, and peaches are all delicious in any combination or alone. Slushies are drinks combining fresh fruit, fruit juice, and ice cubes in a blender. A great twist is to freeze your favorite fruit juice in an ice cube tray and combine the juice cubes with fresh fruit. For a sparkling drink option, add club soda to the fruit slushie mix after it has been blended. Fresh Vegetables Combine dark green lettuces with any fresh vegetable cut into bite-sized pieces. Top with a light vinaigrette dressing for a fresh, healthy side dish. Or, to make a salad into a full meal, add your choice of crushed nuts (almonds are great); a handful of crumbled cheese (feta cheese is fun); and fresh, canned, or diced fruit (mandarin oranges are easy) to any blend of fresh vegetables and dark green, leafy lettuces. Top a main course salad with grilled chicken or salmon for a great, no-heat-in-the-kitchen meal. Use these starter suggestions and your imagination to get creative with cool summer foods! LEADERSHIP AND TRAINING Real Women in Real Women s Ministry Meet Priscilla Colston 1. How did you hear God s call to women s ministry? In the spring of 1999 I had just returned from a Women s Conference in Branson. I felt that God was working in my life, but I wasn t sure what He wanted me to do. I was already teaching a ladies Sunday School class and working with women in our local jail. I was comfortable. Later that summer, my pastor returned from a lunch meeting with our church s LifeWay representative and as he came into the office he stopped at my desk and handed me a Women s Ministry catalog. I can t explain the feeling that came over me I still get emotional when I realize this is what God has been preparing me for women s ministry! Later that year I attended the Women s National Leadership Forum. God has blessed me so much through Women s Ministry. He has given me a passion to see women grow and mature through Bible Study, evangelism, and missions. 2. What is your greatest blessing in women s ministry? When women realize that God does have a plan for their lives and I see them using their gift to serve Him. Nothing thrills me more than when a woman comes to me and says, This is out of my comfort zone but I feel that God is leading me to do... I love it when God gets us out of our comfort zone. 3. What is your greatest challenge in women s ministry? Learning to set boundaries and realizing I can t do it all. God has really taught me patience through Women s Ministry, while at the same time teaching me some difficult lessons. I am learning to wait on Him and sometimes that s very hard. Priscilla Colston serves as Women s Ministry/WMU director at Second Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where she has worked as secretary for eight years. In addition, she has been involved in Women s Ministry for the past seven years. 4. What s your favorite tip to share with another women s ministry leader? If God has given you a vision for Women s Ministry and you just don t know what to do next, get some training! Then I would encourage you to attend the National Leadership Forum in Nashville and the Women s Ministry Track at Ridgecrest during Discipleship Week. These two events will give you training, plus you will learn from other Women s Ministry leaders. I know these have made a difference in my life and my ministry. 5. How do you stay spiritually refueled to do ministry? Bible study and prayer: I know this sounds simplistic, but it is so easy to lose focus with women s busy schedules and demands on their lives. I find I have to be intentional if I am to find time to be quiet and listen in order to stay focused on the ministry God has given me. 37

First, find a place where you are not distracted by the TV or a pile of laundry. Consider keeping a notepad and pen nearby to jot the distractions down so you can revisit them later. This can clear your mind from fearing you ll forget something important. Have a lamp or lighting that allows you to read comfortably. If you have a journal, book, or daily devotion that you like to utilize during this time, keep them all together in some sort of tote, basket, or bag plus you can easily find these items when you get ready to travel. Ask a few believers how they spend quality time with God daily. See what s working for them, and then present your desire to God about how to spend time each day with Him and in His Word.
