The Sunday Readings Theme: God cares for His people. Under the Old Law, He kept them from starvation on their return from exile. In the new covenant, He gives us himself as a food not ot this world. First Reading ( Is 55: 1-3) Isaiah refers to God s physical care of His creation. Although his language is in material terms, he refers to a food that is spiritual: the Word of God Second Reading (Rom 8 :35, 38-39) Nothing should separate us from the love of God. If anything comes between us and God, it must be judged worthless. This text is a practical rule for daily living. How are we to know what the love of God is? It is that which Christ showed us by the example of His own life. Gospel: (Mt 14: 13-21) Jesus goes away to be alone with His grief at the death of John the Baptist, but the crowds follow Him, expecting to see more wonders. Ostensibly, he feeds them out of pity at their hunger. Actually, he is preparing them by this miracle for the doctrine of the Eucharist which He will shortly reveal. Thought for the Day: Not on bread alone does man live but on the Word that comes from God. This Word finds its fullest expression in Jesus Christ. He is our heavenly and eternal food. Jesus gives the manna of the New Covenant, which is himself. But this is not news. During the Holocaust of World War II, millions of people were tortured and killed. This terrible tragedy led many people to wonder about human life. How valuable is a single human life? How valuable are the lives of the elderly, the unborn, the terminally ill? Are their lives worth as much as those of people who are healthy and active, working, and raising families? God creates human life and gives it value. And Jesus gave his life on the cross to redeem each individual human person. By doing this, Jesus said, Your life is worth my dying to save you. Through his own Resurrection, Jesus showed us the glory of our resurrection and of our living in the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that the body and soul of a person, separated at death, will be joined together again in glory at the Last Judgment. The person will be whole for all eternity. The feast of Mary s Assumption is a preview of what our lives will be. At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, or taken up, into heaven body and soul. She did not have to wait for the end of the world, as we do. God granted her this special privilege because of her sinlessness and her fullness of grace. The Church has always believed in Mary s assumption into heaven. But on November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII focused the attention of the whole world on the Assumption of Mary as a dogma and mystery of our faith. This mystery shows us that God wants every human person, body and soul, to be in glory forever, just as Mary is now. This dogma shows how important every single human life is. Pope Plus XII hoped that by thinking about Mary s Assumption, people all over the world would develop a deeper respect for their own lives and their own bodies. He also hoped that people would grow in respect for the lives of others.
Have You Registered at St. Coleman s Church? Please Pray for our Military A Catholic parish is the single most important part of our Catholic Church. This is where we continue the mission of Jesus Christ. This is where we publicly express our faith, joining together with others to give witness of our communion with God and with one another. There are many reasons to register. A sense of belonging and identity in a parish community. Provides the parish community with a way to welcome you. In times of joy and in times of struggle, it is comforting to have the support of a faith family. It is a commitment to practice your faith. Gives a chance for you and your family to be counted and heard in the parish. Being included in the demographics of the parish helps in the planning for the needs of the parish. Gives the parish a way to connect with you. In order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony you will need to be a registered member. For religious education instruction and Sacramental preparation, the families of those attending must also be registered parishioners. St. Colemans welcomes our newest members! Last year we had more than 140 players, and it takes time to assign every player to a team and to allow the coaches time to contact those players on his/her roster. Team rosters will be determined by the program director and his staff. This will ensure balanced teams. The coaches will have their hands full, so please be understanding of their time and commitment. This is an instructional league and our goal is to have the players learn how the game is played, as well as become familiar with the rules. Thursday, August 31st will be a practice day for all players and their coaches. We will use this time to become familiar with the rules and guidelines for our league. We are always in need of coaches and their assistants, as well as referees. It s a great way to earn service hours.
