THE BURIAL OF JESUS Mark 15:42-47
1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
QUESTION: What is the significance of Jesus burial?
THREE POINTS OF SIGNIFIGANCE 1. The burial emphasizes the finality of Jesus death.
MARK 15:42-43 When it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus body.
WHO IS JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA? Prominent member of the Sanhedrin Good and righteous man who didn t agree with the Sanhedrin s verdict against Jesus
LUKE 23:50-51 There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.
WHO IS JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA? Prominent member of the Sanhedrin Good and righteous man who didn t agree with the Sanhedrin s verdict against Jesus Looked forward to the kingdom of God A rich man who was a disciple of Jesus, a true believer
MATTHEW 27:57 When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
WHO IS JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA? Prominent member of the Sanhedrin Good and righteous man who didn t agree with the Sanhedrin s verdict against Jesus Looked forward to the kingdom of God A rich man who was a disciple of Jesus, a true believer Secret disciple of Jesus
JOHN 19:38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly
MARK 15:43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus body.
Why was it a bold move for Joseph to go before Pilate?
Primarily due to the fact that he was exposing to the world around him that he identified with Jesus.
JOHN 19:38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly because of his fear of the Jews
MARK 15:44-45 Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.
JOHN 19:31-32 Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him.
JOHN 19:33-34 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.
DEUTERONOMY 21:22-23 If anyone is found guilty of an offense deserving the death penalty and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree, you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God s curse. You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
JOHN 19:38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly because of his fear of the Jews asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus body. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took His body away.
THE BURIAL OF JESUS Took Jesus off the cross (Luke 23:53)
LUKE 23:53 Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.

JOHN 19:41-42 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.
MATTHEW 27:59-60 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.
THE BURIAL OF JESUS Took Jesus off the cross (Luke 23:53) Cleaned Him off Carried Him to a tomb in a garden nearby Wrapped Him in clean, fine linen sheets with spices
JOHN 19:39-40 Nicodemus (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes. Then they took Jesus body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromatic spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
THREE POINTS OF SIGNIFIGANCE 1. The burial emphasizes the finality of Jesus death. 2. The burial of Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Scripture.
ISAIAH 53:9 They intended to bury him with criminals, but he ended up in a rich man s tomb, because he had committed no violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully.
MATTHEW 27:57-60 When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER? 1. Strongly affirms who Jesus claimed to be 2. Strongly affirms the reliability of Scripture 3. Strongly affirms the sovereignty of God
PSALM 103:19 The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.
JOHN 19:36-37 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of His bones will be broken. Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.
PSALM 34:20 He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken.
ZECHARIAH 12:10 Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at Me whom they pierced. They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for Him as one weeps for a firstborn.
THREE POINTS OF SIGNIFIGANCE 1. The burial emphasizes the finality of Jesus death. 2. The burial of Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Scripture. 3. Jesus burial sets up the resurrection.

MATTHEW 27:64-66 He has been raised from the dead. Then the last deception will be worse than the first. You have a guard of soldiers, Pilate told them. Go and make it as secure as you know how. Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.
