4 Sentence of Scripture Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for whoever loves another has fulfilled the law. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The two Great Commandments Romans 13.8 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Lord, have mercy (8am only) Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy (10am only) Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. The Hymn of Praise, Gloria in excelsis Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day Go before us, O Lord, and further us with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Collect for Mother Esther, CHN O God, your blessed Son Jesus Christ became poor so that through his poverty many might become rich. Inspired by the devotion of your servant Mother Esther, may we serve you with singleness of heart, and support those in need as our sisters and brothers. Delivered from inordinate love of this world, may we attain to the riches of the age to come, your new creation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD A Reading from the Book of Exodus The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to 5

take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbour in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Hear the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 6 Psalm 149 (said antiphonally) 1. O praise the Lord, and sing to the Lord a new song: O praise him in the assembly of the faithful. 2. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. 3. Let them praise him in the dance: let them sing his praise with timbrel and with harp. 4. For the Lord takes delight in his people: he adorns the meek with his salvation. 5. Let his faithful ones exult in his glory: let them sing for joy upon their beds. Exodus 12.1-14 6. Let the high praises of God be in their mouths: and a two-edged sword in their hands, 7. To execute vengeance on the nations: and chastisement upon the peoples, 8. To bind their kings in chains: and their nobles with fetters of iron, 9. To visit upon them the judgement that is decreed: such honour belongs to all his faithful servants. Praise the Lord. A Reading from Paul s letter to the Romans Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval; for it is God's servant for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due them taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honour to whom honour is due. Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbour as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Hear the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn: 390 NEH (10am only) 1. Jesus, where er thy people meet, There they behold thy mercy-seat; Where er they seek thee, thou art found, And every place is hallowed ground. Romans 13.1-10 7

2. For thou, within no walls confined, Inhabitest the humble mind; Such ever bring thee where they come, And going, take thee to their home. 3. Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few, Thy former mercies here renew; Here to our waiting hearts proclaim The sweetness of thy saving name. Remain standing for the Gospel Reading The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew chapter 18 beginning at verse 10 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. "Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost. "If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Sermon Silence may follow Words: William Cowper, 1731-1800 The New English Hymnal The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8 9

The priest says THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for the world and for the Church. The prayers may conclude with Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord s table. Silence may be kept Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution. The priest says Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE All stand. The Greeting of Peace is introduced We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace Offertory Hymn: 233 TIS (10am only) 1. I will sing the wondrous story Of the Christ who died for me, How he left the realms of glory For the cross on Calvary. Refrain: Yes, I ll sing the wondrous story Of the Christ who died for me, Sing it with his saints in glory, Gathered by the crystal sea. 2. I was lost: but Jesus found me, Found the sheep that went astray, Raised me up and gently led me Back into the narrow way. Refrain 3. Faint was I, and fears possessed me, Bruised was I from many a fall, Hope was gone, and shame distressed me: But his love has pardoned all. Refrain 4. Days of darkness still may meet me, Sorrow s paths I oft may tread; 10 11

12 But his presence still is with me, By his guiding hand I m led. Refrain: Yes, I ll sing the wondrous story Of the Christ who died for me, Sing it with his saints in glory, Gathered by the crystal sea. 5. He will keep me till the river Rolls its waters at my feet: Then he ll bear me safely over, Where the loved ones I shall meet. Refrain The gifts of the people having been brought to the Altar: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. [The Lord be with you. And also with you.] Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour, be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin Words: Francis Harold Rowley 1854 1952 Arrangement Australian Hymn Book Co Reproduced with permission Together In Song and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying / singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, 13

we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION We who are many are one body in Christ, for we all share in the one bread. Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. The invitation to receive Holy Communion Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The sacrament is given with the following words, after which the communicant responds Amen The body of Christ keep you in eternal life. Amen. The blood of Christ keep you in eternal life. Amen. Post Communion Hymn: 420 TIS (10am only) (please kneel if possible) 1. Holy Spirit, go before us, Every mind and heart prepare For good news of life in Jesus, For the joyful hope we share. 2. Gently lead the lost to safety, Gently teach them Wisdom s way, Till they come to seek you gladly, Till we find the words to say. The priest says 3. Your good news is news of justice, And the strong befriend the weak In your service, till compassion Builds the peace the nations seek. THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Gracious God, we thank you that in this sacrament you assure us of your goodness and love. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and help us to grow in love and obedience that we may serve you in the world and finally be brought to that table where all your saints feast with you for ever. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Words: Elizabeth J. Smith 1956 All rights reserved. Used by permission. Reproduced with permission Together In Song 14 15

Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Notices and invitations You are welcome to stay and enjoy a cuppa and a chat in the Hall after the 10am service! Dismissal Hymn: 648 TIS (10am only) 1. Help us accept each other As Christ accepted us; Teach us as sister, brother, Each person to embrace. Be present, Lord, among us And bring us to believe We are ourselves accepted And meant to love and live. 2. Teach us, O Lord, your lessons, As in our daily life We struggle to be human And search for hope and faith. Teach us to care for people, For all - not just for some, To love them as we find them Or as they may become. The priest says 3. Let your acceptance change us, So that we may be moved In living situations To do the truth in love; To practice your acceptance Until we know by heart The table of forgiveness And laughter's healing art. 4. Lord, for today's encounters With all who are in need, Who hunger for acceptance, For righteousness and bread, We need new eyes for seeing, New hands for holding on: Renew us with your Spirit; Lord, free us, make us one! The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. The priest or deacon says Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Words: Frederik Herman Kaan 1929- Together In Song From a Prayer Book for Australia.
