COMPOSER NOTES What I have alays loved aout the Gospel of Luke is that everyone in the story seems to urst into song There is a tradition that Luke may have een an artist, perhaps even the first ionographer, sine he paints suh stunning taleaus ith his ords; ut most assuredly he as a poet and a singer That as my first inspiration to rite The Song of Luke In the Infany Narrative alone the story of the annuniation and irth of oth ohn the Baptist and esus, up until esus' eing presented in the Temple and the family's return to Nazareth from Bethlehem are ontained the four great Gospel antiles of the Christian liturgial tradition: the antile of Zehariah (knon as the Beneditus) hih is the hurh's morning song; the antile of Mary (the Magnifiat) of evensong; the Glory to God (Gloria in exelsis Deo) sung y the angels, a traditional Christmas text also used in many traditions at Euharist; and the antile of Simeon (Nun Dimittis) hih has for enturies aompanied night prayer My seond inspiration ame from orking losely ith the Frenh omposer Luien Deiss on his reitative settings of the four aounts of the Passion of Christ for soloists and hoir, liturgial settings to e sung on Palm Sunday or Good Friday But instead of another setting of the Passion, my idea as to rite a antilation of the Gospels for the Christmas yle, ith optional parts for soloists and hoir, and to tie them together ith the great antiles, to of hih I had already ritten in first form, so that they ould also e performed together as a program of sorts And sine I had already egun to ompose sared danes ased on some of the same senes, it seemed ovious to add them in as divertissements Thus, ith the addition of to piees at the eginning and one at the end, as orn The Song of Luke I as hesitant at first to use suh a lofty term as oratorio, ut indeed this ork is an oratorio in the very earliest sense of that ord, that is, an extended setting of a religious liretto for voal soloists, horus and instruments, for performane either in onert or in hurh, usually ithout senery, ostumes or ating per se Stritly speaking though, the redit goes to the good Roman priest Philip Neri in the 16th entury for inventing a type of morality play to e performed in his oratory, hih ould give later rise to the musial version, and soon to opera itself I'm partiularly touhed that the first oratorio as ritten y Cavalieri in early 17th entury Florene, sine I arried postards of Pontormo's fresos of the Annuniation from the hurh of Santa Feliita in Florene ith me for to years as an inspiration Indeed to of the piees ere ritten right on Piazzale Mihelangelo overlooking the Duomo There are ertain themes that arry through the story, ut none so prominent as the fulfillment of promises And so e hear right at the eginning, in the ords of the prophet Baruh, to e onsoled Take off your roe of mourning and misery Put on the splendor of glory What you have aited for is here, is no Why We hear the asses sing at the end of the first piee, Puer natus es, quoting the Gregorian introit for Christmas eause a hild is orn for us, ho is the fulfillment of all promises, in hom the fullness of the Godhead dells odily Indeed, not ust the Here Sriptures, ut all time enters on this hild So as e hear the rest of the hoir moving forard singing the traditional Christmas prolamation, from the time in the eginning hen God reated the heavens and earth, through seular time and the reign of Otavian Augustus, the asses hant the genealogy of esus from Luke 3, from oseph ak to Adam and God's on self, until they oth ollide: " the hole orld eing at peae, in the sixth age of the orld " So too Simeon and Anna, ho had aited so long ith all the ust ones, at the end are ontent to die in peae, for ith their on eyes they have seen the Light made flesh O that e may see and feel in our on hearts the onsolation of that promise fulfilled efore e lose our eyes to sleep So, too, e hear Gariel lessing the hild in Mary's om, Elizaeth lessing Mary for elieving that the promise of the Lord ould e fulfilled, and Zehariah lessing God for oming to set Israel free; hile Mary turns rather to us four times, saying lessed is anyone ho hears the ord of God and keeps it like a treasure in the heart, ehoing the same ords her son himself ill say For us too the promise ill e fulfilled, the eternal irth of God in our on virginal hearts, if e have the ourage of hope iii

Lest e get too ogged don in our reasoning faulties, four times e ill let sounds and moving odies express for us movements that perhaps annot e expressed or explained, and refuse to e ontained y mere ords And ust as eah of the prinipal haraters have a voie and a dane, so they eah have an instrument, the ooe for Mary, the assoon for Elizaeth, the ello for Zehariah, and espeially prominent is the larinet of Gariel We must rememer that Gariel is the voie of God; in Here Sriptures it is not all that lear that the angel may e God's on self manifesting So let's say the larinet is the voie of God, ut this is the "oyote" God of the desert, daning at the periphery, daring, inviting, aoling us to dane too I have alays loved the plaintive yet oyous resonane of the larinet espeially in the klezmer musi of Eastern Europe So listen throughout for the invitation to oin in the dane The only one silent here is esus, ho as yet, in the ords of Timothy Dudley Smith, " omes to us as one unknon, / a voie unseen, unheard, / as though ithin a heart of stone, / a shriveled seed in darkness son, / a pulse of eing stirred" 1 But that is as it should e for no, for soon enough " ev ry stone shall ry / in praises of the hild / y hose desent among us / the orlds are reoniled" 2 I have folloed rather srupulously the Ne Amerian translation of the Bile for the reitative, ith some slight omissions for revity's sake, ut all the texts for the antiles and all other intervening piees are my free adaptations of the Sriptural texts An enormous det of thanks to my friend and ollaorator ohn Pennington, for making this happen; to Linda Mak and the Durango Choral Soiety hose right faes ere in my mind's eye late nights and early in the morning dreaming up hoir parts for real people; to my rother monks of Ne Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, espeially Fathers Raniero and Isaiah ho have lovingly and generously folloed every step on the ay; and to my dear friends in Italy ho gave me three eeks of gentilezza to put the first notes on paper in 2000 Glory to God, and peae peae peae to all people and reatures ho live on the earth Cyprian Consiglio, OSB Cam 1 Timothy Dudley Smith 2 Rihard Wilur iv
