THE BOOK OF JUDGES ISRAEL IN THE TIME OF THE JUDGES 1380-1050 B.C. JUDGES CHAPTER 6:1-24 Media Reference Number WN-457 - - May 16, 2007 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: "Let a Man Arise" Part 2 Israel during the period of the judges and the establishment of a nation SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Worship, Praise, Meditation, Reflection, Remembering Introduction to the Text; Judges 6:1-24 Statement of Textual Summation and Theme Last Time; We learned that in 206 years of judges, Israel had cycled through her fourth generation of spiritual highs and lows. with each high, peace and prosperity was enjoyed. The Lord was worshipped and the nation experienced great blessings. With each low, natural disasters, economic challenges threatened the nation until finally, terrorist marauders would move in and attack Israel and take them captive in their own land! LET A MAN ARISE 1.) In the things that led us toward revival v. 1-6 1

Judges 6:1-5 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, :2 and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains. :3 So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. :4 Then they would encamp against Israelites and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. :5 For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it. :6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD. The Location of Midian The Land of Midian was the region east of the Jordan River and South toward the Dead Sea, later occupied by Ammonites, Moabites and Edomites) Today, it is the area of southern Jordan and a portion of Saudi Arabia, Islamic Lands Today. Verse 6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD. w h a t w a s t h e r e s u l t o f t h e h a r d s h i p? - r e p e n t a n c e t o w a r d G o d! Here In The United States, Those Things That Would Lead Us Toward Revival are The Same Things That Led Israel into Revival! 1. An Awareness of Sin what is America s sins? 2. An Awareness of God s Purity humbling ourselves in reality 3. An Awareness of Judgment accepting what we deserve 4. The Hope of Deliverance there are none who can help but God 2

imagine for a moment that we re a team, the believer and the nation that he/she, lives in. a nation suffers or succeeds as a team. Christian, we live in America, America s judgment will be something that we will have to endure, because there is a judgment that God places on national sin too! The Result is Revival Isaiah 6:1-9 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. :2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. :3 And one cried to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory! :4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. :5 So I said: Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts. :6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. :7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said: Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged. :8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. :9 And He said, Go, and tell this people: 1.) In the things that led us toward revival v. 1-6 2.) In the things that the LORD desires v. 7-10 Judges 6:7-10 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the LORD because of the Midianites, :8 that the LORD sent a prophet (a man unnamed - in the office of a prophet) to the children of Israel, who said to them, Thus says the LORD God of Israel: I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondage; :9 and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. :10 Also I said to you, I am the LORD your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But you have not obeyed My voice. 3

In The Days of King Saul 1Samuel 15:22-23 So Samuel said: Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. :23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you We Talked About Revival Among Us The Christians until the Christian goes back to those whom they have offended, God will not hear them when they pray. so they launch out, thinking the Lord is with them when He s not and eventually get attacked by Midianites. Verse #1 Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. :15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Verse #2 Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD S hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. :2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. Verse #3 Matthew 18:15-17 If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the fault. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. :16 But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. :17 If that person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. If the church decides you are right, but the other person won t accept it, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. Verse #4 Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, :24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 4

Verse #5 1 John 1:6-9 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. :7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. :8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. :9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. LET A MAN ARISE 3.) In the things that the LORD can see v. 11-13 Judges 6:11-13 Now the Angel of the LORD (theophanies) came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abbey-zrites, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. :12 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor! :13 Gideon said to Him, O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. The Angel of the LORD (a theophanies or christophany) a preincarnate appearance of Christ in the old testament the term appears 60 times in the bible. With Abraham Genesis 22:11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! So he said, Here I am. Against Balaam Numbers 22:31 Then the LORD opened Balaam s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 5

With King David 1 Chronicles 21:16 Then David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. At Jericho Joshua 5:15 Then the Commander of the LORD S army said to Joshua, Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so. At The Burning Bush Exodus 3:5 Then He said, Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. Verse 6 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor! The Lord Sees Our Potential it s my potential that the LORD sees and knows that In Him it is possible. Why Do Some Christians Complain About Not Seeing Anything Great Happen? because they don t believe Him 6

I really don t believe that much will happen, but go ahead and try to convince me God 2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD range (search) throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What Does God Want to Do with Me, with You? Matthew 19:26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Philippians 4:12-13 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. :13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Verse 13 Gideon said to Him, O my lord, if the LORD is with us, Why then has all this happened to us? and where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD has forsaken us if (no, the Lord was with them, He can t bless disobedience) why then (because, He can t bless disobedience) and where (they re nowhere, He can t bless disobedience) but now (no, He just can t bless disobedience) LET A MAN ARISE 4.) In the things that are not his own v. 14-16 7

Judges 6:14-16 Then the LORD (the Angel of the LORD) turned to him and said, Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you? :15 So he said to Him, O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father s house. :16 And the LORD said to him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man. So Amazing To Me Are the plans of God. why would God use Gideon? He s weak, He s scared, He s Whining We Need to Learn from Gideon Here as to what not to do. do we believe in the supernatural? do we believe in the unseen? do we believe in God? LET A MAN ARISE 5.) In the things that we cannot comprehend v. 17-24 Judges 6:17-23 Then he said to Him, If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talks with me. :18 Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You. And He said, I will wait until you come back.. Verse 19 So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat, and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot; and he brought them out to Him under the terebinth tree and presented them. (about two hours time) 8

Verse 20-21 The Angel of God said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so. :21 Then the Angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire rose out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. And the Angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. Verse 22-24 Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the LORD. So Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! For I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face. :23 Then the LORD said to him, Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die. :24 So Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it (Shalom) (lit. The LORD Is Peace. ) To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abbe-zrites Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; :7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Turn to Hebrews 11 the lifestyles of the righteous and faithful John 14:27 peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
