Belshazzar The The events we will discuss today took place in Babylon. They transpired near the end of the Jews 70 years of captivity. At the point of our lesson today, Nebuchadnezzar has died and his son Nabonidas was reigning as king with his grandson Belshazzar. This was a co-regency 1

Nabonidas, Nebuchadnezzar s son, was reigning from Egypt. Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar s grandson, was reigning in Babylon. It was during the story that we will study today that the great Kingdom of Babylon comes to an end. Da 5:1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine in the presence of the thousand. 2 While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave the command to bring the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple which had been in Jerusalem, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. 2

3 Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple of the house of God which had been in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. Critics have jumped on this statement that Nebuchadnezzar was the father of Belshazzar believing it to be an error in the scriptures. Archeology has proven Belshazzar was the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar and that Nabonidus was the father of Belshazzar. Calling Nebuchadnezzar the father of his grandson is completely in line with the way the word father is used in the scriptures. Father is often used to refer to grandfather, great grandfather or any other male ancestor. 3

The Jews used this language referring to Abraham who was their ancestor. John 8:53 "Are You greater than our father Abraham The woman at the well used similar language. John 4:12 "Are You greater than our father Jacob It would have been perfectly normal for Nebuchadnezzar to have been called the father of Belshazzar. Belshazzar being Nebuchadnezzar s grandson fits perfectly with the scriptures. Jer 27:6 'And now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant; and the beasts of the field I have also given him to serve him. 7 'So all nations shall serve him and his son and his son's son, until the time of his land comes; and then many nations and great kings shall make him serve them. 4

Da 5:4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone. 5 In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other. 5

7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise men of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom." 8 Now all the king's wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished. 6

It is amazing how quickly Daniel was forgotten by those in power. The things that he and his three friends had done should have been stories known by everyone in the kingdom. This seems to be a pattern with human beings. When things are going good, most people have a tendency to forget about God. 10 The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, "O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change. 7

11 "There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father-your father the king-made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. 12 "Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation." 8

13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel, "Are you that Daniel who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah? 14 "I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 "Now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing. 9

16 "And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom." It is interesting here that Belshazzar has offered to Daniel to be the 3 rd ruler in the kingdom. Why not 2 nd in the kingdom like Joseph? 3 rd in the kingdom just seemed odd to me until I understood what the situation was with the king at the time. 10

As we mentioned before Belshazzar was reigning as a coregent with his father, Nabinodas. He couldn t offer him 1 st ruler in the kingdom that was his father s place. He wasn t going to offer him 2 nd that was his place. The best that Belshazzar could do was 3 rd in the Kingdom. 17 Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, "Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. 18 "O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. 11

19 "And because of the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. 20 "But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 12

21 "Then he was driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses. 22 "But you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. Belshazzar was without excuse. He knew about all of these things that happened to Nebuchadnezzar Although he knew, he decided to glorify and worship idols rather than the Most High God. He had treated the God of the universe with disdain by bringing out the utensils from His temple and using them like common items at a drunken feast. 13

23 "And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 "Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written. 25 "And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26 "This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 14

27 "TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 "PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. Judgement Day had arrived for Belshazzar:. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it. (Your time is up!) TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting, (You have been measured against the standard and you don t measure up!) PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. (Your sentence is, you will be killed and your kingdom given to others) 15

In other words Belshazzar you have failed miserably! Coffman says in his commetary "Gobryas, Cyrus' great general, was at that very moment making his way up the bed of the Euphrates, its waters diverted by a canal, leaving the gates of Babylon unguarded." 30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old. Events transpired just as God said By the time Belshazzar saw the writing on the wall it was to late for him. His arrogance had sealed his fate. 16

God s Writings For Us What about us? We don t have any handwriting on the wall but we do have the writing s of God. The Bible! These things were written down for us, by men inspired by God. Are there parts of God s writing that we ignore? Remember that Belshazzar knew all this but evidently ignored it. God s Writings For Us Are there parts of God s word we ignore? If so this is arrogance. Jas 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 17

God s Writings For Us Submit to God! Which means obey his commands. By doing so we show our humility and our love for him Joh 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. We won t go thru a list of commands that we need to submit to. God s Writings For Us Most of us are pretty well aquainted with the commands of God. So I will let you fill in the blank I know God wants me to. But I just don t want to do it! That is not humility! That is not submitting to the will of God! 18

Conclusion This principle applies to any of the Laws of God that we know but refuse to obey. The point being, if we know what God wants and then decide to do something different we will be like Belshazzar who was without excuse. In the case of Belshazzar it was simply to late. It is not to late for us yet. But the time is coming when it will be! 19
