Gaither Bob Peterson, trombone Scripture Reading Matthew 14:22-33 Sandra Peterson Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. It s a ghost, they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: Take courage! It is I. Don t be afraid. Lord, if it s you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But

when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You of little faith, he said, why did you doubt? And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. Sermon The Storm He Sees Leif Lind Closing Hymn God, Who Made Each Great Wide Ocean Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Tune: Beach Spring (1) God, who made each great wide ocean and who moved o er restless seas, By your word you set in motion mighty storm and gentle breeze. Wind and Spirit show your glory, seas and waves your strength declare; Ships and boats point to the story of your wondrous love and care. (2) Jesus in a boat was preaching on a lake called Galilee; Later, Christ with hand out-reaching called to Peter in the sea. Frightened by a storm they called him, Master, will you let us drown? In that boat there, Jesus awed them; he said Peace! The winds calmed down. (3) When the storms of life are blowing and our church knows doubt and fear, Lord, may we find peace in knowing you command a safe ship here. May we hoist the sails, relying on your Spirit, steady, true. See! This ship is almost flying! May we place our trust in you. Benediction (Please be seated after the benediction) Leif Lind Postlude Leaning on the Everlasting Arms Jon Spong The boat, an ancient Christian symbol of the church, being safely carried across the storms of life Sermon Resources: So the typical lesson derived from this text often borders on the misunderstanding of the nature of faith. The message is not If [Peter] had had enough faith, he could have walked on the water, just as the message to us is not If we had enough faith, we could overcome all our problems in spectacular ways. This interpretation is wrong in that it identifies faith with spectacular exceptions to our ordinary days, days that are all subject to the laws of physics and biology. This is wrong because when our fantasies of overcoming this are shattered by the realities of accident, disease, aging, and circumstance and we begin to sink, this view encourages us to feel guilty because of our lack of faith! Faith is not being able to walk on the water only God can do that but daring to believe, in the face of all the evidence that God is with us in the boat, made real in the community of faith as it makes its way through the storm, battered by the waves. Now that our church ministry leaders have been elected for the next two years, they will be reaching out to you to ask you to join their ministry teams to make each part of Glendale City Church work effectively while not overburdening any volunteer. What Are Camp Meetings?: A series of meetings held for a number of days [often 10], generally in a rural or semirural setting, with provision for encampment on the grounds; a type of meeting now peculiar to the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a few other denominations. Camp meetings are held in various sections of the world, usually annually, and at times when the weather is suitable for such occasions. Camp meetings originated among the Presbyterians in Kentucky in the early years of the nineteenth century and later flourished especially among the Methodists. SDA camp meetings began in 1868, five years after the General Conference was incorporated in 1863. The background for the SDA gatherings was in the Millerite camp meetings of 1842-1844, in which both James White and Joseph Bates, early leaders of the SDA Church, had participated, and in similar meetings held by the Methodist Church with notable success. Steering away from the basically evangelistic nature of the nineteenth-century camp meetings, SDAs today tend more and more to utilize these yearly sectional gatherings as spiritual meetings for the church members, though not ignoring opportunities for neighborhood evangelism.
