Sunday, April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Prelude Ah, Holy Jesus arr. Susan Ullom Berns Welcome to worship at Vinje Lutheran Church. We want you to know that you are very welcome here. We want this to be a safe place, where we can bring our best and our worst, our peace and our pain. This is a place of healing and reconciliation. And now let us stand as we are able, to confess our brokenness and to hear God s word of forgiveness. Confession and Forgiveness During the season of Lent we are called to return to the Lord with all our heart. Let us confess our sin and seek reconciliation with God and neighbor. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Merciful God, you sent Jesus Christ to save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We fail in love, neglect justice, and ignore your truth. Have mercy on us and wash away our sin. Create in us clean hearts for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Behold, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation. Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. 1
Amen. Gathering Song What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine Hymnal #774 1 What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms; what a blessedness, what a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain Leaning, leaning, (Leaning on Jesus, leaning on Jesus,) safe and secure from all alarms; leaning, leaning, (leaning on Jesus, leaning on Jesus,) leaning on the everlasting arms. 2 Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, leaning on the everlasting arms; oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain 3 What have I to dread, what have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain Text: Elisha A. Hoffman, 1839-1929 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Welcome and Announcements WORD Scripture Reading Acts 2:43-47 Bible pg. 886 43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Holy Gospel Matthew 5:43-48 Bible pg. 787 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Glory to you, O Lord Praise to you, O Christ Please be seated Message The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Hymn of the Day Lord Jesus, You Shall Be My Song Hymnal #808 1 Lord Jesus, you shall be my song as I journey; I'll tell ev'rybody about you wherever I go: you alone are our life and our peace and our love. Lord Jesus, you shall be my song as I journey. 2 Lord Jesus, I'll praise you as long as I journey. May all of my joy be a faithful reflection of you. May the earth and the sea and the sky join my song. Lord Jesus, I'll praise you as long as I journey. 3 As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant, to carry your cross and to share all your burdens and tears. For you saved me by giving your body and blood. As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant. 4 I fear in the dark and the doubt of my journey; but courage will come with the sound of your steps by my side. And with all of the family you saved by your love, we'll sing to your dawn at the end of our journey. 4

Refrain Text: African American spiritual Hymn Around You, O Lord Jesus Hymnal #468 1 Around you, O Lord Jesus, your own you gather still to share the feast you give us with grace our lives to fill. You say to us so lovingly, Take, eat! This is my body! Take, drink! This is my blood! 2 We hear your invitation, and heed, O Lord, your call; your word of consolation is spoken here to all. It draws us to your loving heart; it brings to us your blessing, which never will depart. 3 We are your own forever; until our final breath we will be true and never in joy, in grief, in death depart from you, for you are still among your people dwelling, as you have said you will. In deep, flowing waters, we share in Christ's death, then, rising to new life, give thanks with each breath. 10
2 In Christ called to banquet, one table we share, a haven of welcome, a circle of care. Although we are many, we share in one bread. One cup of thanksgiving proclaims Christ, our head. 3 In Christ called to witness, by grace we will preach the life-giving gospel; God's love we will teach. By grace may our living give proof to our praise in costly compassion reflecting Christ's ways. 4 Unite us, anoint us, O Spirit of love, for you are within us, around us, above. Equip us for service with gifts you bestow. In Christ is our calling. In Christ may we grow. Text: Ruth Duck, b. 1947 Text 1995 Pilgrim Press. All rights reserved. Used by permission.
