THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH JULY 17, 2016 THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BECOMING AWARE Sabbath is a way of living, not a thing to have or a list to complete. By observing it we become people who know both work and rest, and who know why, when, and how we do either. ~Donna Schaper, Sabbath Keeping How you spend your day is how you spend your life. ~Annie Dillard THE WORSHIP OF GOD RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. PRELUDE Near to the Heart of God Cleland B. McAfee The text to the Prelude may be found at number 581 of the hymnal. * THE CALL TO WORSHIP One: This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Many: This is a day for peace and proclamation, for rest and reflection, for working at worship instead of worshipping work. One: The Sabbath day is a holy day, consecrated by the Creator as a gift of creation. We are commanded to honor and preserve it. Many: The sabbath day is a holy day, wherein we realize that all days are God s days; a day of rest, wherein we realize that all work is God s work; a day of peace, wherein we can realize that God is our maker and our mender, too. One: Together, let us keep the sabbath. * HYMN Like a River Glorious see insert

* INVOCATION AND PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Dale Osborne One: The Peace of Christ be with you! Many: And also with you! Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality. * SONG OF PRAISE Where the Spirit of the Lord Is 264 Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace. ADAMS Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is love. There is comfort in life s darkest hour, there is light and life, there is help and power in the Spirit, in the Spirit of the Lord. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please pass the Friendship Registers found on each row. Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! Dale Osborne LISTENING THE HEBREW SCRIPTURE Deuteronomy 5:12-15 A SABBATH POEM Praying by Mary Oliver from the collection, Thirst. It doesn t have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don t try to make them elaborate, this isn t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. THE GOSPEL LESSON Luke 10:38-42 Pastor: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. * HYMN OF PREPARATION Sabbath Sings a Quiet Song see insert

* PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Pastor: Now may the words of my mouth, All: And the meditations of all our hearts be pleasing and acceptable in your sight, O God, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. SERMON When Sabbath is the Better Part Marcus McFaul The first of three services and sermons on Sabbath TIME FOR SILENT REFLECTION PRAYING AND GIVING HEARING OUR JOYS AND CONCERNS Stephanie Ford THE MORNING PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD S PRAYER (New Zealand/Maori Version) Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Leaning on the Everlasting Arms Anthony J. Showalter The text to the Anthem may be found at number 560 in the hymnal.
