Letter from Rev Dr Martin (Chunky) Young Dear friends, I am aware that getting to church this Sunday is going to be difficult for many in our congregation. The 94.7 has become a huge and attractive annual event and whilst I am not against the race and realise that it is a great event on the Johannesburg Calendar, as is the Christmas Market, I do wish it could be run on a Saturday or somewhere, where it does not close down three quarters of the Northern Suburbs for an entire day. Having said that I do want to wish all of those who are riding a good ride, I know that it means a lot to many people and as it is not in our power to change the time or location, let s get behind those who do it and wish you all well. For those who do manage to come to church, thank you for your effort, it is always good to see those who have access and do make the effort, it certainly makes standing up in the pulpit on Sunday a lot easier. Because this weekend is a tricky one I would like to use this section of the Weekly Message to highlight our brand new book on the history of St. Columba s. Over Ninety Years Young. This wonderful book highlights the ministry of St. Columba s over the last Ninety years. It looks at many of the people and personalities who went into making St. Columba s a congregation which has really made a difference to the lives of its members, its local community, and people across both national and international borders. Its ministry has forced it to challenge both local and national authorities in an effort to support the values of the Kingdom of God. It looks at its ministry to the sporting world, the gay community, the acting community. It has articles from members who have expressed their experience of St. Columba s.
Letter from Rev Dr Martin (Chunky) Young continued The book will be launched at this year s Christmas Market, which believe it or not, is only two weeks away. Please see the flyers advertising the special launch. We have printed only 500 copies, so please place your order as soon as possible, especially if you would like to use this book as a Christmas present. The special Launch price is R300. I would like to thank Carl Ballot who has taken this project and run with its completion. There have been many who have contributed along the way. The initial work was started by the late John Dunbar, after many editorial efforts, Alan Maker made a great contribution to the final product, but it was Carl who treated this work as his own child, and has now brought it to the place where we are able to make it available to you. As you will read, much of St. Columba s ministry has been defined by our outreach work, it is therefore fitting that all the profit made from the book will go directly toward outreach. Please support this amazing book which tells a remarkable story about a community that believed their call was to worship Jesus and participate fully in his program of love in the world. Christmas Day Luncheon 2012 Dear Friends, With just a month and a half to go Christmas will be upon us. Every child will be extremely excited and starting to count the sleeps. Every parent would be wishing for one extra month to do all things they thought they would do to make this year s Christmas that wonderful occasion that it is for so many. We at St. Columba s are in exactly the same position, we too want to make Christmas something special for each and every member of the church and local community. The services have been planned, the carol singing in the park is set aside for Sunday Evening 23 rd Dec, the very popular midnight service with communion is being prepared and then of course our family services on Christmas Day. But that is not all we do on Christmas Day at St. Columba s, we also have our Christmas Lunch. After the family services we feed some two hundred and eighty people in the hall. These people come from some of the poorest parts of our city and if it weren t for St. Columba s they probably would not celebrate at all. St. Columba s has been doing this for the past Thirty-Five years and it has always been done with your help. I am sure this year will be no different. Below you will find a list of what we need in order to make the lunch a day to be enjoyed and celebrated by all of those who attend. Please would you tick off what you would like to contribute to the church and send your reply to jamsam@iburst.co.za or elvina@stcolumbas.org.za for this great event.
