The Practice of Holiness In Oneself Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. 1 Peter 2:1-3
Section Outline III. Practice of Holiness (2:1-3:22) A. In oneself (2:1-2:3) 1. First put away the bad stuff (2:1) 2. Thirst for the Word (2:2) 3. Taste test is your faith real? (2:3)
First put away the bad stuff (2:1) Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander Malice desire to hurt others Deceit misleading through lies or trickery Hypocrisy pretending to be better than you are Envy desire to have what others have Slander speaking evil of another (esp. when untrue) Holiness entails SELF- AWARENESS, not SELFISHNESS.
Thirst for the Word (2:2) like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation Like newborn babies Long for the pure milk of the Word That you may grow So we should try to be like babies? Sort of
Like newborn babies Babies are almost completely helpless They must be fed They cannot chew Babies are growing at an amazing rate Birth to 6 months: ½ to 1 a month; gain 5 to 7 ounces a week. A baby can double his or her birth weight by 5 months. Growth rate slows as the baby ages Our desire for the Word should be like a baby s desire for milk
Long for the pure milk of the Word Remember these? It s fitness you can drink (198?) Milk does a body good (198?) Got milk (1993 2014) Milk Life (2014 - ) It s Simple everything you need It s Pure there s nothing bad in it Yep. Milk is great! But is it enough?
Milk vs. Meat (aka solid food) I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. 1 Corinthians 3:2
Milk vs. Meat And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
Milk vs. Meat Concerning [Christ] we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Hebrews 5:11-14

Milk is the place to start! like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation Read the Word and you will grow! It is the essential first food for the believer! It s fast, easy, delicious, and refreshing! As you grow, add solid food to your diet Our desire for the Word should remain like a baby s desire for milk, but our maturity level should not!
Taste test is your faith real? (2:3) if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. Refers back to chapter 1 The assumption is that you have tasted his kindness through faith But if you have not, none of this applies! You cannot grow if you are dead! The best way to taste the Lord s kindness is by drinking deeply from His Word!
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalms 34:8
