The Gospel Project: 3.3 Elementary MC Guide Session Title: Joseph Sent to Egypt Bible Passage: Genesis 37:1-36; 39:1 41:57 Main Point: God used Joseph s suffering for good. Unit Key Passage: Genesis 26:24 Lesson: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: Do you remember how we got to this session? Can anyone tell me about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Remember, God made a covenant with Abraham to make his descendants as numerous as the stars. God also said that He would bless all the world through those descendants. This promise continued to Isaac and Jacob and Jacob s family, which is where we find ourselves today. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: God used Joseph s suffering for good. Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: Joseph s brothers sold him into slavery, which probably seemed like a terrible, hopeless situation for Joseph. The Bible tells us that God was with Joseph. God gave Joseph favor with Potiphar, who was Joseph s master, and Potiphar put Joseph in charge of all of his household. Then, Joseph was accused of something he didn t do and was thrown into jail. Even in jail, God was with Joseph. God gave Joseph favor with the jail keeper, who put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners. God also gave Joseph the power and wisdom to interpret a dream for Pharaoh s cupbearer, who was also in jail at the time. Years later, Joseph had an opportunity to interpret a dream for Pharaoh. God was working His perfect plan all along. The dream told that there would be a famine in the land, and many people would be without food. Because Joseph interpreted the dream, Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of preparing for this famine. They would have plenty of food, and God would ultimately save many people s lives including God s people s lives because of what had happened to Joseph. Without the suffering Joseph experienced, God s people would not have survived the famine. Show MainPoint (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) 1/16-17/16

Application: Let s watch our discussion starter video and see what it might have to do with our story. Play the Discussion Starter Video: Can you imagine moving to another country? What would you do if you were Mia or Carlos? Joseph moved to another country without his family. He had to learn a new culture, and I m sure it was very difficult. Still, God was working out His plan. Unit Memory Verse: God was always with Joseph throughout the difficult situations he found himself in. Similarly, we know that God has promised to always be with those who trust Jesus because He has given the Holy Spirit to them. The promise that God made to Abraham has been continued through many generations to us! God blessed all the world by sending Jesus, His only Son, to die on the cross to pay for sin and rise again three days later. This is the best news we could ever receive! Jesus made a way for us to have a right relationship with God. The promise found in Genesis 26:24 was for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and it continues on today. Show U3_MemoryVerse Repeat after me Show MainPoint Let s review our Main Point one more time. (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Dismiss kids to class: 1/16-17/16

Bible Story: Video Jacob and Esau were brothers. Esau was a hunter while Jacob worked at home. Their father Isaac favored Esau. Their mother Rebekah favored Jacob. One day, Jacob was cooking lentil stew when his brother came home from the field. I am exhausted! Esau said. Let me eat some of that red stuff. Jacob answered, First sell me your birthright. The birthright usually belonged to the oldest child. Whoever had the birthright got more of his family s belongings when his parents died. I m so hungry, I m about to die, so what good is a birthright to me? Esau replied. So he agreed to give Jacob his birthright for stew and bread. Now their father Isaac was getting old and losing his eyesight. Isaac called for Esau. I want to bless you before I die, Isaac said. Isaac asked Esau to bring back food from a hunt and cook it for him. Rebekah heard Isaac and Esau talking, and she came up with her own plan. Go to the flock and bring me two of the best young goats, Rebecca told Jacob. I will make your father s favorite meal. Then take the food to your father to eat so that he may bless you before he dies. Rebecca made her husband s favorite meal. Jacob was worried that his father would know he was not Esau. Jacob had smooth skin, and Esau was hairy. Rebecca put Esau s clothes on Jacob and covered his hands and neck with goat hair so that Isaac would think Jacob was Esau. Then Jacob took the meal to his father. Who are you, my son? Isaac asked. I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may bless me, Jacob said. Isaac asked Jacob to come closer. He felt Jacob s hands. The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau, Isaac said. It s me, Esau, Jacob said. So Isaac answered, Serve me, and let me eat some of my son s game so that I can bless you. Then Jacob brought his father food and drink, and he ate. After the meal, Isaac told Jacob to come closer. He kissed him and, after smelling his clothes Esau s clothes Isaac offered him the blessing. The blessing included land, riches, and power. Then Jacob left. About this time, Esau came home from his hunt and cooked a meal for his father. When he offered the food to Isaac, his father told him that he had been tricked and Jacob had been given the blessing. Esau cried and begged his father to bless him, too. But Isaac had nothing left to offer his son Esau. Esau was angry at his brother Jacob, and he made a plan to kill him. But Rebekah sent Jacob away to her brother s house, where he would be safe until Esau calmed down. Christ Connection: Jesus is the firstborn over all creation. (Colossians 1:15) When Jesus hung on the cross, He gave up His blessing for us. Jesus took the punishment we deserve so that the Father would give us the blessing He deserves. 1/16-17/16
