We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else who looks like they know what is going on. Restrooms - We would ask that you use the restrooms out the back doors and down the hallway on left. Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right. We apologize for our mess as we remodel our sanctuary. Understanding the Church Year Pentecost The word Pentecost literally means fifty. Pentecost was the Jewish Festival that came fifty days after the Passover. During Pentecost, Jews from around the world gathered in Jerusalem to worship the Lord and bring the firstfruits of their spring harvest to the temple. On the fiftieth day after the first Easter, God kept his promise and sent his Holy Spirit to his disciples. The Spirit enabled them to witness Jesus in many different languages. This morning, we ll celebrate the Spirit s coming as we welcome two confirmands into adult membership. THEME FOR TODAY S SERVICE: GOD S GOOD NEWS COMES THROUGH THE SPIRIT 1

COMMON SERVICE Our worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Christian Church. OPENING HYMN Come, Oh, Come, Life-Giving Spirit 181 (vss. 1, 2, 4) INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CHOIR ANTHEM The Perfect Wisdom of Our God 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST LESSON Joel 2:28-29 In the past, God made his will known by sending his Spirit to his servants the prophets. Joel, one of those prophets, saw a time when God would pour out his Spirit on all people. 28 And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. VERSE OF THE DAY 1 John 3:24b P: Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. C: Alleluia! This is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. Alleluia! 3

THE GOSPEL John 16:5-11 Jesus promises his disciples that, although he would be leaving them, he would send the Advocate the Holy Spirit. He fulfilled his promise on the Day of Pentecost. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 4

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY O Gracious Lord, With Love Draw Near 784 (insert) THE SERMON TEXT Acts 2:1-6; 13-21 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 5

20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. SERMON After the sermon, the congregation sings: Don t Miss the Real Gift of Pentecost! Acts 2:1-21 OFFERING Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. - 2 Corinthians 9:7 6

RITE OF CONFIRMATION Confirmation is a public profession of the Christian faith, following a period of instruction. Those being confirmed publicly profess their faith in the truths of Holy Scripture and are recognized as being properly prepared to receive Holy Communion and welcomed into church membership. CONFIRMATION VOWS & ESSAYS CONFIRMATION VERSES Mason Mortel Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Josiah Cloute 1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. THE SACRAMENT 7

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day kept his promise and poured out the Holy Spirit to empower his Church to proclaim the gospel in all the world. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 8

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD 9

DISTRIBUTION Guests: We believe that God wants everyone who comes to communion to understand what is being offered and to also be united in the teachings of his Word. Therefore, if you are not a member of Living Savior (or another WELS\ELS congregation), we would ask that you please wait to come to communion until you have had the opportunity to learn all that we believe and teach about the Sacrament. If you would like to join us in the future, please speak to Pastor or Vicar. Thank you. DISTRIBUTION HYMN What Is This Bread? 742 (insert) THANKSGIVING SONG OF SIMEON THE BLESSING P: May God bless and keep you, May God smile on you. May God show you kindness, Fill you with peace. And may God bless you, Father, Son, and Spirit; May we always love and serve, Filled with God s peace. 10 C: May God bless and keep us, May God smile on us.
