The Gathering of the Community Prelude Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts Purcell Welcome Hymn 1 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee: holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though our sinful human gaze thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessèd Trinity. please stand please remain standing The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Two Great Commandments Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these your laws in our hearts. 3

The Collect of the Day Almighty God, your son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world. May your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word please be seated 1 Samuel 3:1-10 read by Charm Darby Reader A reading from the first book of Samuel 3 Now the boy, Samuel, was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! 5 and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. 6 The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 Refrain 1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. 3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Refrain 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. Refrain 13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. Refrain 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. Refrain 17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 I try to count them they are more than the sand; I come to the end I am still with you. Refrain Gospel Acclamation please stand Choir Speak, O Lord, your servant is listening, you have the words of everlasting life. 5

And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. 46 Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! 48 Nathanael asked him, Where did you come to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. 49 Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! 50 Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. 51 And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the Epiphany Season led by Louise Yearwood Please adopt the posture that puts you in the best position to talk to God, whether standing, sitting, or kneeling. In this season of Epiphany, when peoples from afar came to worship Jesus the Lord, let our prayer be as wide as the world. Let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. That the light of Christ may shine on all nations, far and near, and that the Church may welcome them with the diversity of their cultures. Within the diversity of our own parish, we remember the following members in our cycle of prayer. Let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. That in our day, justice may flourish and peace come to all the world, let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. That God's people may hear the poor when they cry, have pity on the weak, and open their hearts and hands to the needy. We remember before God those on our hearts this day {silent and spoken prayers for those in any need, and those who have died} Let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. That all who look, for a star or sign to guide them, may discover the goodness of the Lord in people full of faith and love, let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. 7

That in our Christian communities we may learn, like the wise ones of old, to share the treasures of our goods and hearts, let us pray to the Lord: Let the light of Christ shine on all people. Lord our God, we rejoice that you have become near to us in Jesus your Son. Let him be the light of life now and for ever. Amen. The Celebration of the Eucharist During the following hymn, we take up a financial offering to nurture God s kingdom among our people and beyond our walls. A growing number of us contribute via Pre-Authorized Giving. Giving joyfully and freely to God s work is one practical way that we are being transformed into a people of hope & confidence, humility & gratitude, wonder & curiosity, generosity & purpose. If you are visiting with us this morning, please feel no compulsion to give. please stand Hymn 381 Kids Join in! Praise, my soul, the King of heaven 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing. eluia, eluia, praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide, and swift to bless; alleluia, alleluia, glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: alleluia, alleluia, widely as his mercy flows. 4 Frail as summer s flowers we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on: alleluia, alleluia, praise the high eternal one. 5 Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face; sun and moon bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. eluia, alleluia, praise with us the God of grace. Prayer over the Gifts Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen 8

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; you have revealed your eternal plan of salvation, and have shown your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of all peoples. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with the whole company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and singing: Sanctus Hymnbook, 732 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted, and in his holy gospel commands us to continue, a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood. On the night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. 9

In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the lifegiving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church, and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, world without end. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Communion baptized persons are welcome at Christ s table. If you do not wish to receive the wine, you may touch the base of the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. If you prefer to receive a blessing, please come forward and cross your arms. Holy Communion will be brought to those unable to come forward to the Lord s table. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Agnus Dei A New s Mass, Murray Choir 10

Prayer after Communion Jesus calls us here to meet him Jesus calls us here to meet him, as through word and song and prayer we affirm God's promised presence, where his people live and care. Praise the God who keeps his promise; praise the Son who calls us friends; praise the Spirit who, among us, to our hopes and fears attends. Jesus calls us to confess him Word of life and Lord of all, sharer of our flesh and frailness, saving all who fail or fall. Tell his holy human story; tell his tales that all may hear; tell the world that Christ in glory, came to earth to meet us here. Jesus calls us to each other: found in him are no divides. Race and class and sex and language such are barriers he derides. Join the hand of friend and stranger; join the hands of age and youth; join the faithful and the doubter, in their common search for truth. Jesus calls us to his table, rooted firm in time and space, where the church in earth and heaven finds a common meeting place. Share the bread and wine, his body; share the love of which we sing; share the feast for saints and sinners hosted by our Lord and King. Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: such a way as gives us breath, such a truth as ends all strife, such a life as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: such a light as shows a feast, such a feast as mends in length, such a strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: such a joy as none can move, such a love as none can part, such a heart as joys in love. please stand God of glory, you nourish us with bread from heaven. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that through us your light may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. 11

The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always.
