Martin Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Choral Introit: Our Song Shall Rise to Thee Cathedral Choir; David Gardner, director Holy, holy, holy! O Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea; God in three persons, blessed Trinity. *Opening Hymn #2: Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful flesh thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, Perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky and sea; God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Welcome & *Greeting Time *Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Psalm 23 1The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long. Prayer of Confession & Assurance of Pardon *Hymn of Assurance #542: Near to the Heart of God There is a place of quiet rest near to the heart of God, A place where sin cannot molest, near to the heart of God. There is a place of comfort sweet near to the heart of God, A place where we our Savior meet, near to the heart of God. There is a place of full release near to the heart of God, A place where all is joy and peace, near to the heart of God. Invitation to Children s Worship <<WE HEAR>> Story of Hope Offering Moment & Prayer of Dedication Tithes & Offerings: "Requiem" Eliza Gilkyson; arr. Craig Hella Johnson Cathedral Choir Blessed Jesus, help us, we are shaken; All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken, Taken by the sea. Blessed Jesus, calm our fears, have mercy, Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy, Hear our mournful plea. Our world has been shaken, we wander our homelands forsaken, In the dark night of the soul bring some comfort to us all, O blessed Jesus, come and carry us in your embrace

That our sorrows may be faced. Jesus, fill the glass to overflowing Illuminate the path where we are going Have mercy on us all. In fun'ral fires burning each flame to your myst'ry returning, In the dark night of the soul your shattered dreamers, Make them whole, O blessed Jesus, Fill us with the riches of your grace, Lead us to a higher place, In the dark night of the soul, our broken hearts you can make whole, O blessed Jesus, come and carry us in your embrace, Let us see your gentle face, Jesus. Sermon: A Sabbath Rest George Hinman Text: Hebrews 4:1-11 (p. 972) 1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest is still open, let us take care that none of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For indeed the good news came to us just as to them; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "As in my anger I swore, "They shall not enter my rest,' " though his works were finished at the foundation of the world. 4 For in one place it speaks about the seventh day as follows, "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works." 5 And again in this place it says, "They shall not enter my rest." 6 Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he sets a certain day "today" saying through David much later, in the words already quoted, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later about another day. 9 So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; 10 for those who enter God's rest also cease from their labors as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs. <<WE RESPOND>> *Hymn of Response #594: Like a River Glorious Like a river glorious is God s perfect peace, Over all victorious in its bright increase; Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day, Perfect, yet it growth deeper all the way. Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest, Finding, as he promised, perfect peace and rest. Hidden in the hollow of his blessed hand, Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;

Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care, Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there. Every joy or trial falleth from above, Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love; We may trust him fully all for us to do; They who trust him wholly find him wholly true. Healing Prayers *Benediction _+_+_+_+_+_+_ PASTORAL PARTICIPANTS George Hinman, Senior Pastor Charles Jenner, Liturgist Tim Snow, Executive Pastor David Gardner, Director of Worship & Arts Hannah Byun, Principal Organist NEW SERMON SERIES WHO IS JESUS? To know him is to love him Do you love me? It s the question at the heart of life. Jesus asked it. For Jesus, the story of our lives is the story of our loves. So what do we love most? And what is most worthy of our love? Those who first knew him and saw him risen from the dead became convinced that the answer must be: Jesus. They knew how much he loved them, and they loved him. Their lives and their world were transformed by that love. But how can we love him today? How can our hearts be awakened and reshaped by love for him? We begin by getting to know him. To know him is to love him. The New Testament epistle to the Hebrews has been called the fifth gospel because it presents rich images of Jesus not on earth but in his ongoing heavenly ministry. These images not only tell us what he does but more importantly who he is. It s good news that gives us great hope and rekindles our affections for so great a Savior. CONDOLENCE Our sympathy to the family and friends of Shelley Dahl who died on August 3. A service of celebration and remembrance will be on Wednesday, September 27 at 10:00 am at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. CHANCEL FLOWERS
