131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 1 of 9 To be Filled with the Spirit & To be Anointed with the Spirit Last week we talked about the baptism of the Holy Spirit The IN and Upon experience for the believer A wonderful experience last Sunday - and it continued on Tue & Wed night with community groups. Many prayed - had hands laid on to be baptized, laid hands on others to be baptized. Tongues - Prophecy - Received by faith - Skepticism Some of you have experienced a changed life this week - a more dynamic and powerful walk We are trying to develop a theological and practical understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit. We don t want out lives to be just normal We want them to be abnormal, because they are functioning with the Power from the Holy Spirit, for the glory of Jesus. Our Paradigm for working and operating in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus - greater exaltation Holiness - greater practical holiness Mission - deeper engagement on mission Surrender our will our life agenda, to His will, his agenda for our lives. What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? What does it mean to be anointed? John 3 - John baptizes Jesus - The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove and the Father said - This is my son in who I am well pleased. Power and Identity issue resolved - settled - Holy Spirit Power - love and authority of the Father Luke 4:1 - Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted/tested Luke 4:14 - Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. Jesus - doing all his miracles and ministry in the Power of the Holy Spirit Jhn 3:34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. Jhn 1:32 And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 2 of 9 In the life of Jesus - given the fullness of the spirit - no sin - The Holy Spirit remained on Him - He had no need for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit - We DO We have not been given the Spirit without measure - we probably can t handle it. - Nor does the Spirit remain upon us, as it did with Jesus. We have a need to to be filled with the Holy Spirit repeatedly. The bible teaches us that the The filling of the Spirit is not a one time event, but is something that we need again and again. Being filled with the Holy Spirit may involve momentary empowering for things such as ministry and mission, perseverance and suffering - relational wholeness - - comfort and joy in trials. May also involve long-term character change - transformation Paul said In the context of difficult times - days - evil Ephesians 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Don t go to the bottle, go to the Holy Spirit. Don t put yourself under the influence of alcohol, put your self under the influence of the Holy Spirit. be filled - present tense - better translated as be continually being filled be filled is in the imperative - it is a command - it is not an indicative (statement of fact) be filled is in Passive tense - not soothing that you do for yourself, it is done to you. You may have disagreed about the in and upon - and that there is a second experience. That is fine. - No need for division over that We are to pursue and God is to supply. It is not optional it is a command -be continually filled. as long as you agree that we need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit - It is a mute point - the end result is the same - the baptism of the Holy Spirit causes us to be filled with the Holy Spirit The main point is that we all need the Filling of the Holy Spirit - we need the Power of the Holy Spirit and the Father is willing to give Him to us. We know for sure is that every Christian is to be repeatedly - frequently filled with the Holy Spirit Peter experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Acts Chapter 2, later in Acts 4 Acts 4 1 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 3 of 9 5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power or by what name have you done this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone. 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Here we have an individual filling - pentecost was a corporate filling Trouble comes to all of our lives, relationships, parenting, business, family - am I going to be faithful to Jesus of not? There is always an opportunity to be faithful to Jesus when trouble comes For faithfulness to Jesus Christ we need the power of the Holy Spirit Peter having just been filled with the Holy Spirit made this faithful proclamation. He had the power of the Spirit - Peter also had Christ likeness vs 13 - religious leaders And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Prior to this they recognized Peter by his Galilean accent - not the aroma of Christ on him. They recognized that something abnormal was happening. Supernatural and powerful to meet overwhelming needs Do you have overwhelming needs in your life? - God has supernatural power for you. They had an intangible connection to Jesus now - to be filled with the Holy Spirit results in the person, aroma, beauty of Christ - emanating, oozing out Ever met a Man (Bob Chappell), a Woman - they are so filled with the Holy Spirit - it is awesome in them? How about when we gather - their is a palpable or felt presence - because the people are filled with the Spirit? The effect of repeated, subsequent, fresh fillings = Manifest Christ-like qualities, A boldness for Christ, And provides power/unction for the need of the moment End of Acts 4 - further threatened by the religious leaders - the same men who had Jesus crucified - they hold a prayer meeting

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 4 of 9 4:29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus. 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Need: perseverance in the face of persecution - Provision: corporate filling of the Holy Spirit. In the coming decade - expect more of it - increasing frequency and intensity of persecution for being a Christian. 32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. Effects of the Church being filled with the Holy Spirit - were unity, power, grace, and generosity. One heart - One Soul - Deep Deep unity = Love Unity does not mean cookie cutter homogeny - we don t need to believe the same in every detail, act the same in every way - what unifies us is that we are all men and women who are guilty of sin, and we have been forgiven and saved from death, destruction, and hell, through faith in Jesus Christ - according to His grace. What unites us is infinitely more wonderful than the things that divide us. We are frail, selfish, fearful people, so we need the Holy Spirit to fill us - to unite us around Jesus. There was power in the church - it wasn t an empty gathering, vain rambling - there was a power and anointing - There was abundant Grace There was great generosity - there isn t going to be a need among us - we are going to take care of each other - and we are going to take care of those in need outside the church, because we want them to be born into the church. More than ever - we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, so that the way we live, backs up the Gospel we proclaim. I Peter 4:12-14 12 Dear friends, don t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. 14 So be happy when you are insulted for being a Christian, for then the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you. There is a unique promise of the Holy Spirit being upon us for difficult times.

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 5 of 9 Acts 7 - (preaching of Stephen - religious leaders are not happy - result is martyrdom bad things happening to good people) 54 The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen s accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God s right hand. 56 And he told them, Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God s right hand 57 Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him 58 and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 He fell to his knees, shouting, Lord, don t charge them with this sin And with that, he died. Individual filling of the Spirit - Results - Comfort, Strength and Grace I see the Glory of God - vision that brings comfort Graciousness -- do not hold this sin against them (v. 60) Romans 15:13 A Prayer I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Need: deal with opposition Provision: Individual filling of the Holy Spirit Acts 13:1-12 1 Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of Syria were Barnabas, Simeon (called the black man ), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (the childhood companion of King Herod Antipas), and Saul. 2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them. 3 So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way. 4 So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit. They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus. 5 There, in the town of Salamis, they went to the Jewish synagogues and preached the word of God. John Mark went with them as their assistant. 6 Afterward they traveled from town to town across the entire island until finally they reached Paphos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He had attached himself to the governor, Sergius Paulus, who was an intelligent man. The governor invited Barnabas and Saul to visit him, for he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing. 9 Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. 10 Then he said, You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord? 11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time. Instantly mist and darkness came over the man s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him. 12 When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord. Seeking to see people get saved, they are on mission, and when you are on mission you will experience opposition.

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 6 of 9 IN Acts 9 - Paul was already baptized in the Holy Spirit We Need the filling of the Holy Spirit to deal rightly with the opposition Proclamation and Demonstration - Explain and expose what it means to know and glorify Jesus. Paul is trying to display, show, and tell/proclaim the Good news of Jesus. There is help in that time of need - filling to face opposition The enemy was exposed, the enemy confronted and the the plans of the enemy were thwarted, and the plan and the purpose of the Lord - prevailed. The Spirit helps us as we endeavor to live life on mission for the Glory of God Know that Jesus dealt with spiritual warfare in the power of the spirit - Luke 4 - Devil tempted Him Mat 12:28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. Every believer has been given the sword of the spirit - for warfare. (Eph 6:17) Desire for Filling is usually proportional to the degree that you are engaged in mission. True for moms, business people, students, every man woman and child - living on mission for Jesus and for His glory. We have provision of the power the Holy Spirit upon us to expose, confront, and thwart the enemy plans. In all these examples of repeated subsequent fillings of the Holy Spirit - the immediate needs varied - the contexts were different, but the end result was always the same - faithfulness witness for Jesus Christ. These things happens to us everyday - Spiritual warfare ; need for comfort in suffering ; need for perseverance ; testifying about Jesus They were people who desire to be faithful to and used by Christ (mission) Every Christian is called to live life on mission where you are, as who you are, doing what you do, among who you know Don t need to get on a plane, join something, right now you are a sent person to live on mission - Cape Cod is your mission field (people)/battlefield (enemy) - it is the place where you are to harvest and be fruitful, walk in confidence and fearless faithful living in Christ. The Holy Spirit is available to meet your everyday needs Some of you have know idea what it is like to operate, function, live life in the power of the Holy Spirit, because the only thing you are into it you, your will, your agenda, your plans. Repent

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 7 of 9 To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to be filled with the immediate presence of God Himself, and it therefore will result in feeling what God feels, desiring what God desires, doing what God wants, speaking by God s power, praying and ministering in God s strength, and knowing with the knowledge which God Himself gives Wayne Grudem The most repeated promise in the scripture - I am with you - things happen when God is with you. So, in my own life, I ask to be filled with God s Spirit When I wake up, when I have a difficult conversation, when I am sad, when I am afraid, when I need to parent well, when I am going to work and coming home from work, when I need patience with a person, when I need to love my wife better, when I preach, when my wife or child is sick; when my thoughts are all selfish; when I am tempted The Holy Spirit also wants to anoint us. Anointing is very connected to and integral to the filling of the Spirit, but there is a difference between anointing and filling. Jesus is our example Luke 4:16-22 - 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,fn To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD. fn 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, Is this not Joseph s son? Is this not Joseph s son? - Something is different - He is speaking with an authority, quality, and power that wasn t there before - something has changed. Churches explanation of Jesus and what He did. Jesus explains that The Spirit is upon me, He has anointed me. Acts 10:38 God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Anointing is when the Holy Spirit enables you for a special/unique task. Anointing is an enabling (giving of the Holy Spirit) for a special task, role, time or place. It is the gifts functioning with unction (special power) gifts with extra juice - extra fire

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 8 of 9 Gift is functioning at its fullest and their is a tangible liveliness You have experienced anointed preaching, evangelist, worship leaders, intercessors (Spirit Anoints and it s firing) The church needs men and woman anointed for special tasks, roles, times, Billy Graham - content isn t anything spectacular - but their is an anointing - speaks with power, authority, world changer Gifting - count on that always being there - anointing isn t always there. We want the gifting to be anointed so that there is an inexplainable power- enabling - for the Glory of God Exodus 29:7 And you shall take the anointing oil, pour it on his head, and anoint him. David anointed King Concept of anointing comes from the OT - Moses was told to make Aaron and Sons priests 1 Sam 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle - beautiful - Exodus 31 Bezalel Exodus 31:1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, 5 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. Every believer Priesthood of the saints - royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) - every Christian is called to live on mission - Priests had to be anointed - we will be anointed to the degree and the extent that we are wanting to function in this priesthood of representing God in this world. Anything that we do for God is to be done, not by power or by might but by God s Spirit (Zechariah 4:6) Why refilling? Why keep asking for the filling and the anointing? Do we leak? Are we crackpots? It is hard to say - Some say, It is not how much of the Spirit you have, it is how much of you the Spirit has That is partially true, we are to be controlled by Him, but that is not what we are talking about We are talking about the Holy Spirit being given to us and us being filled by God repeatedly

131110_Filling_Anointing_HS Page 9 of 9 I don t think think the issue is leakage but the bible is clear that we grieve the Holy Spirit by our sin The Holy Spirit will bestow or withdraw blessing according to whether or not He is pleased by the situation He sees Jesus was completely without sin and the Spirit remained on Him (Jn 1:32 ) and was given to Him without measure (Jn 3:34 ) The HS can be grieved (Eph 4:30 ) and quenched (I Thess 5:19 ), resisted (Acts 7:51 ), insulted (Hebrews 10:29 ) and lied to (Acts 5:3 ) by Christians and the result is limited or no blessing in your situation The Holy Spirit will not force Himself on us against our wills (1 Cor 14:32 ) but if we resist and quench and grieve and oppose Him, then His empowering will depart and He will remove much of the blessing of God from our lives, Conversely, when our conduct is pleasing to God the Holy Spirit will be more present and bring much blessing. Pursuing the same goal as the Spirit (1) Exalting Christ, (2) pursuing holiness, (3) engaging in mission This is part of what it means to walk in the Spirit or be in the spirit it is to live in cooperation with the Spirit We can know close fellowship and partnership with the Spirit in our lives (2 Cor 13:14; Phil 2:1) Through surrender Which brings comfort, joy, peace and hope to the life of the believer Acts 9:31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. Acts 13:52 And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
