Experiencing The True Peace Of God Tape: E- 8 E. Rome Time: 1 / 26 /03 11a.m. Text: John 14: 27 Introduction: John 14: 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled. Peace is the subject. Peace is the most sought after thing in the world. Everyone is seeking and trying to find peace. Well, I want us to talk about peace today, using the subject, Experiencing The True Peace Of God Now the word peace is important, but the words true peace is more important. First, Let us notice: I. The Woeful Problems That Are Damaging A. The Dual Problems Which Can Give You Heart Problems 1. Troubles Can Give You A Troubled Heart V.27- next to last phrase- Let not your hear be troubled Did you know that you are living in a troubled world? Job 14: 1- Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. These disciples were having trouble. They just had been told by the Lord in Ch. 13 that He was going to the cross and die. The Lord told them that He would be leaving them. They were heart broken! They were heart broken! We all will face troubles in this walk of life that will trouble our heart. I see people, and I hear people with troubled hearts weekly as a pastor. If your troubles are bad enough, they can cause your heart to hurt. No Christian is exempted from having a troubled heart, but the Lord can help His children with a troubled heart, as we will see later in this message. Troubles Can Give You re a Troubled Heart 2. Fear Can Give You A Troubled Heart V.27- Last phrase- neither let it [ heart] be afraid. Having a troubled heart can cause you to have a fearful heart! However, when we have a fearful heart, we can be assured that the Lord did not cause it, or want you to have it. 2 Timothy 1: 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 1

Now, we are to fear the Lord, but we are not to fear the un-known. Fear usually comes from the lack of faith. In V.1- the Lord tells the disciples to believe in Him. We are to put our trust in the one that is able to take care of us, especially when trouble comes in our life, irregardless of what it may be. Ephesians 3: 20 Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Christian friend, when troubles come into your life, don t let fear overcome you, but put your faith in a God that is able to take care of you! The Dual Problems That Can Give Your Heart Problem B. The Don t Prohibition That Can Give Your Heart Peace V. 27b Last phrase- Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. By saying, LET NOT, He is saying don t let your heart be troubled. He is saying that we have a responsibility to not let our heart be troubled and afraid. Now, He would not have said, let not, if there was not the means to stop our heart from being troubled. Did you notice that this whole chapter is designed to furnish the means for a troubled heart? The Lord starts off in V. 1 Let not your heart be troubled. Then He continues to say, V.1b Ye believe in God, believe also in me. He tells us to believe or trust in Him. The Lord is going to supply the means to take care of a troubled, fearful heart. Now, I can t deal with all of them in this chapter, but I do want to major on a few! Let us notice them. He tells them that He is going to leave with them several things that will help a troubled life, if they depended on these things in time of trouble. 1. The Lord Was Leaving The Means Of Comfort V.16 18 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever. V.17- Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth in you, and be in you. V.18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come unto you. The comforter is the Holy Spirit. The word comforter means one who comes along side to aid. Psalms 23: 4- thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 2

The staff that he was talking about was the means of support. When one would lean on the staff, it would support and bring comfort. The Holy Spirit is with us, and if we will lean on Him during the time of trouble, we will be comforted. Yes, the Lord did leave this world, but He sent His Spirit to be with us and support us when troubles come in our lives. 2. The Lord Was Leaving The Means Of Contentment V27a- Peace I leave with you. We will talk about this peace later in the sermon. 3. The Lord Was Leaving The Means Of Communication V.13 And whatsoever ye ask in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Yes, the Lord was leaving His disciples, but they were still going to be able to communicate with Him through the means of prayer. Now, in the present tense, we are able to speak to the Lord about anything, especially our problems. Hebrews 4: 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. One of the best things you can do, if you are having troubles, is to go to the throne of grace and talk to the one that is able to help you during your troubles. Means of Comfort Means Of Contentment Means Of Communication 4. The Lord Was Leaving The Means Of Consolation V. 1 3- The Lord was consoling his disciples who had a troubled heart. The Lord is letting them know that He is not leaving them permanently, that He was going to come back and get them. Listen to V.3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. When the Lord comes back after us, all of our troubles will be over. We are living in a troubled world, but the place that we are going to is trouble free. Revelation 4: 4- And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 3

The Woeful Problems That Are Damaging II. The Wonderful Peace That Is Divine A. This Peace Is Divine Peace V.27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: My peace has reference to the Lord and Saviour. Philippians 4: 7- says that God s peace passeth all understanding. The world will never be able to comprehend the peace of God. The people of God may try to explain it, but the only way to understand it is when one gives their life to the Lord. Then they can experience having the peace of God which passeth all understanding. I don t know about you, but I am glad I can experience the peace of God in a world that does not know what true peace is. When we put our trust in the God of peace, when troubles come our way, we will maintain the peace of God which passeth all understanding. B. This Peace Is Designated Peace 1. The Designated People V. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you- The you were his disciples, but the you also includes all believers. God s peace can only be experienced by the people of God. We can experience the peace of God because we have experienced peace with God, when we got saved. Romans 5: 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Etc. Since we have peace with God, we can experience the peace of God. 2. The Described Price V. 27a Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. God s peace is a gift. It is free. It doesn t cost you anything. It comes along in a package deal when you get saved. When one gives their life to the Lord they receive this peace, the peace of God. The world s peace is costly, as we will talk about a little later, but God s peace is free. If you could buy God s peace with money, this would be the highest commodity on the face of this earth. If you could bottle up the peace of God and sell it, you would never run out of customers, because this is the main goal in life, to have peace and contentment. 4

Since this is the case, Christian friend, you possess something that is worth more than this whole world. In other words, you are rich, if you possess the peace of God in your life. This Peace Is Divine Peace This Peace Is Described Peace C. This Peace Is Different Peace V. 27 2 nd phrase- my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth. Since Satan is the God of this present world [ 2 Cor. 4:4 ], Satan is in charge of giving the lost peace. Let us think about the world s peace, which is different from God s peace. 1. The World s Peace Is Counterfeit The world s peace is not genuine and real. In order for you to find peace in this world, you have got to do something worldly in order to receive this peace. For instance, a lot of people in this world seek peace through drugs. Some seek peace through alcohol. Some people seek peace through pleasure. Some people seek peace through prosperity. [ Rich Farmer ] The World s Peace Is Counterfeit 2. The World s Peace Is Costly For those who seek peace through alcohol, it can be costly. Billions of dollars are spent on alcohol each year. This kind of peace is not free. This kind of peace can cost a person their life. For those who seek peace though drugs, it can be costly. It not only can cost a lot of money, but it can cost a person their life. Seeking peace through pleasure can be costly. Billions of dollars are spent on pleasure. There are the boats, campers, motorcycles, which cost a lot of money to own and use. Now, some things used for pleasure are not necessarily sinful, unless you put them above God. However, in 2 Timothy 3: 4 talks about the last days, and how people will be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. 3. The World s Peace Isn t Continuous Hebrews 11: 25- talks about enjoying the pleasure of sin for a season. 5

When a person seeks alcohol for pleasure, it won t last. One beer, one drink of liquor will turn to two, then three, then more and more, because alcohol can t bring true peace. The same is true with drugs. The same is true with pleasure. The same is true with people who seek peace from prosperity. They will never get enough, and buy enough to get real genuine peace that only comes from God. I personally tried to find peace through the means of the world before I got saved. I tried the boats, the motorcycles, the beer, the camping, but I did not find true genuine peace until I gave my life to the Lord, then for the fist time in my life I experienced true, genuine, lasting peace. Praise the Lord! God s peace is continuous. The eternal God gives eternal peace. Since peace is a gift, it will belong to us forever, because God will not take something back that He gives. Now, we do know that if we allow sin to come into our lives, we will not sense the peace of God. David said- Psalms 51: return unto me the joy of my salvation. However, as long as we keep our sins under the blood, we will experience the peace of God in our lives. Conclusion Lets sum up John 14:27 in our closing remarks. 1. Our text speaks to us about the God of true peace. 2. In order to experience the peace of God, one has to trust in Christ as their personal Saviour. When we put our trust in the Saviour, we will have peace with God, and then experience the peace of God. 3. The peace that we talked about is Divine peace, and different peace. This Divine peace that we experience as Christians is different from the world s peace. 4. The world s peace is counter fit and is costly, and it is not continuous. 5. The Lord talks to us about trouble and fear. The Lord says, let not your heart be troubled. 6. The Lord tells us that He has left the means for not letting our heart be troubled. a) The Lord Left The Means Of Comfort.V.16-18 b) The Lord Left The Means Of Communication V.13 c) The Lord Left The Means Of Contentment V.27 d) The Lord Left The Means Of Consolation.V.2 & 3 ( He is not going to leave us in a troubled world ) 6
