Assyria destroys the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BC

Babylonia King Nebuchadnezzar destroys the Southern Kingdom of Judah in 586 BC, burning Jerusalem and the Temple.

How the Babylonian Exile Affected the Jews They were left wondering if God still loved them and if they were still His special people. They were unsure how to be the people of God when the things that had most represented their election as God s people the Promised Land and the Temple had been taken away or destroyed. They did not know how to worship without a Temple. They were fearful of being assimilated and losing their uniqueness as a people as had happened to the tribes in the Northern Kingdom of Israel when Assyrian had conquered them 136 years earlier.

The Books of 1 & 2 Chronicles 1 & 2 Chronicles: 1010-970 BC David is King. 970-930 BC Solomon is King. 960 BC First Temple is built in Jerusalem. 930 BC Israel splits into Northern & Southern Kingdoms. 722 BC Northern Kingdom of Israel falls to Assyrians. 605-586 BC Southern Kingdom of Judah falls to Babylonians, Jews are deported (3X), Jerusalem and the Temple are destroyed. 539 BC Persia conquers Babylonia; decree of Cyrus allows Jewish return.

The Book of 1 Chronicles Author: The Chronicler (trad. Ezra) Date: c. 500 BC or later Theme and Purpose: To encourage the remnant of returnees to Jerusalem by retelling the history & experiences of the Israelites, especially King David. Outline: *Genealogies of David & Israel (1-9) *David s ascent (10-12) *Acquisition of the Ark (13-17) *Victories of David (18-20) *Preparation for the Temple (21-27) *Last days of David (28-29)

The Book of 1 Chronicles Key Verses All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.'" 3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a compact with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel. 1 Chronicles 11:1-3 David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, "Praise be to you, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. 11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 12 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. 13 Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name 1 Chronicles 29:10-13

The Book of 2 Chronicles Author: The Chronicler (trad. Ezra) Date: c. 500 BC or later Theme and Purpose: To encourage the remnant by reminding them of their history esp. the reign of Solomon (w/ special emphasis on the building of the Temple), & the period of the divided kingdoms (w/ more focus on Southern Kingdom of Judah). Outline: *Solomon s reign (1-9) The Temple built (2-7) The reign & death of Solomon (8-9) *Reigns of the kings of Judah (10-36) *Proclamation of Cyrus of Persia (36)

The Book of 2 Chronicles Key Verses Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years... 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done. 3 In the first month of the first year of his reign, he opened the doors of the temple of the LORD and repaired them. 2 Chronicles 29:1-3 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful, following all the detestable practices of the nations and defiling the temple of the LORD, which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. 15 The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. 16 But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. 17 He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians, who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and spared neither young man nor young woman, old man or aged. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. 20 He carried into exile to Babylon the remnant who escaped from the sword 2 Chronicles 36:14-17, 20

The Book of 2 Chronicles Key Verses In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and to put it in writing: 23 "This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: "'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Anyone of his people among you - may the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.'" 2 Chronicles 36:22-23

550-330 BC
