Temple Beth Hillel 9 Month Calendar October 206/5777 June 207/5777 Adult Education and Major Temple Events 70 Temple Beth Hillel Est. 946
Introduction Happy 70th birthday, Temple Beth Hillel. Our history as a congregation in the East San Fernando Valley is varied and rich. So too, for each student who has learned from our community, from two years old to eighty years old, we have made our mark on countless souls. This year, 5777, our Adult Education Calendar is full of learning experiences that explore our past and challenge us to think about our future. We will live the words of Rav Abraham Isaac Kook who said, the old shall be renewed, and the new shall be made holy. I invite you to come and learn with us. To study our tradition, ancient and modern, and to make it holy for you. This is a presidential election year and we want to talk about it! Dr. Steven Windmueller will join us on Shabbat, Friday, October 28 following our Kabbalat Shabbat service to talk about The Jewish Vote and the 206 Elections: What s at Stake on November 8th. On November, we will join with our neighbors at Adat Ari El for a Shabbat Service at 6:00pm, a Shabbat Dinner at, and 8:00pm guest speakers and scholars J.J. Goldberg and Jonathan Tobin. RSVP to this event at bethhillel.info We are delighted to bring Ellen Allard to our congregation as scholar in residence. Ellen, an internationally recognized Jewish musician and composer, will lead us in musical worship on Friday, November 8 at 6:30pm. Ellen will also lead a special session with Rabbi Sarah Hronsky on Sunday, November 20 called, Smoothies, Songs and Scripture. This will be an opportunity to explore texts, sing together, and think about how the things we put in our bodies are expressions of our values. TBH will again participate in the Shalom Hartman Institute s Los Angeles Synagogue Collaborative. Scholars will present on four Sunday afternoons at a variety of locations. The theme, Visions for a Shared Society: The Tribes of Israel and explore questions including, what are the core values of some of the tribes that comprise Israel today Secular, Arab Palestinian Israeli, Religious Zionist, and Ultra Orthodox? How does a people divided along religious, geographic, and ideological lines build a shared society? What are the challenges and the possibilities for Israel in building a Jewish and Democratic State? Following some of the lectures there will be a dinner, where those in attendance can continue the discussion (there will be a fee for the optional dinner). The lectures are free for members of TBH. Our hallmark programs will happen this year, too. Join us for each week or for our monthly. This year we are also introducing a new monthly Shabbat morning study on the second Shabbat of the month. These are just a few of our amazing adult learning opportunities. Please look through all of our learning opportunities in this Adult Education Calendar. We hope you will join us.
