Benjamin Britten: War Requiem, op. 66 I. Introit Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et Eternal rest give to them, O Lord: and Lux perpetua luceat eis. Let perpetual light shine on them. Te decet hymnus Deus is Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem: exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro Requiem A hymn shall be sung to thee, O God, Sion; and a vow shall be payed thee in Jerusalem: Hear my prayer: to You all flesh shall come. Rest eternal Anthem for doomed youth (W. Owen) What passing bells for these who die as cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries for them from prayers or bells, Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs, -- The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmer of good-byes. The pallor of girls brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of silent minds, And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ have Mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us, II. Dies irae Day of anger (Britten s translation)* 1. Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum Day of anger, day of vengeance (That day) Solvet saeclum in favilla: When the ages are reduced to ashes: Teste David cum Sybilla. As David, with the Sybils testified. 2. Quantus tremor est futurus, What terror will surround the doom d, Quando judex est venturus, Judges ready to weigh out Cuncta stricte discusurrus! Severity for mortal actions. 3. Tuba mirum spargens sonum, The trumpet with resounding sound Per sepulchral regionum, Will oblige the dead to leave their tombs, Coget omnes ante thronum. To appear before the throne. 4. Mors stupebit et natura, Death s nature will be hid by stupor, Cum resurget creatura, at the sight of creatures leaving their tombs, Judicanti responsura. Giving a reply to their judge. Bugles Sang (Baritone) Bugles sang, saddening the evening air, And bugles answered, sorrowful to hear. Voices of boys were by the river-side. Sleep mothered them; and left the twilight sad. The shadow of the morrow weighed on men.

Voices of old desponsdency resigned, Bowed by the shadow of the morrow, slept. 5. Liber scriptus proferetur, A book will be produced In quo totum continetur, containing all that is needed Unde mundus judicetur. To judge the world. 6. Judex ergo cum sedebit, When the judge appears, sitting tribunal, Quidquid latet apparebit: all that is hidden shall appear: Nil in ultum remandebit. Nothing will remain unavenged, 7. Quid sum miser tunc dicturus? What, unhappy one, shall I say then? Quem patronum rogaturus Shout protests to or shall I call Cum vix justus sit securus? When barely the just will be safe? 8. Rex treemendae majestatis, King of tremendous majesty, Qui salvandos salvas gratis, Who saves your elect without their deserving it, Salva me, fons pietatis. Save me source of compassion. Out there, we ve walked quite friendly up to Death; Sat down and eaten with him, cool and bland,-- Pardoned his spilling mess-tins in our hand. We ve sniffed the green thick odour of his breath,-- Our eyes wept but our courage didn t writhe. He s spat at us with bullets, and he s coughed Shrapnel. We chorussed when he sang aloft; We whistled while he shaved us with his scythe. Oh, Death was never enemy of ours! We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum. No soldier s paid to kick against the powers. We laughed, knowing that better men would come, And greater wars; when each proud fighter brags He wars of Death for Life; not men for flags. 9. Recordare, Jesu pie, Remember, merciful Jesus, Quod sum causa tuae viae: I am the reason for your journey: Ne me perdas illa die. Do not destroy me on that day. 10. Quaerens me sedisti lassus: You looked for me, even when sitting exhausted: Redemisti Crucem passus: and have redeemed me by the suffering of the cross: Tantus labor non sit cassus. So much labor cannot be useless. 12. Ingemisco, tanquam reus I groan, as if one condemned: Culpa rubet vultus meus: shame reddens my vision: Supplicanti parce, Deus. God, hear my prayers. 13. Qui Mariam absolvisti, You who absolved Magdalene Et latronum exaudisti, Fulfilled the robber s penitence, Mihi quoque spem dedisti. You also have given me hope. 15. Inter oves locum praesta. Give me place among your sheep, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Separate me from the goats, Statuens in parte dextra. Placing me at your right hand. 16. Confutatis maledictis, When you have cursed Flammis acribus addictis, And thrown the evildoers into purgatory: Voca me cum benedictis. Call me among the righteous. 17. Oro supplex et acclinis, I pray you, humbly prostrate at your feet, Cor contritum quasi cinis, My heart crush liked ashes, Gere curam mei finis. Take care of my ultimate fate. Be slowly lifted up (Baritone)

Be slowly lifted up, thou long black arm, Great gun towering toward Heaven, about to curse; Reach at that arrogance which needs thy harm, And beat it down before its sins grow worse; But when thy spell be cast complete and whole, May God curse thee, and cut thee from our soul! (Reprise of vs. 1) 18. Lacrimosa dies illa, On that day of weeping, when the Qua resurget ex favilla, sinner rises from the ashes, to be judged Judicandus homo reus. The guilty man who is judged. Huic ergo, parce, Deus: Therefrom spare him too, O Lord. Futility (Tenor) Move him into the sun Gently its touch awoke him once, At home, whispering of fields unwown. Always it woke him, even in France, Until this morning and this snow. If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know. 19. Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen. Think how it wakes the seeds,-- Woke, once, the lays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides, Full-nerved still warm too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth s sleep at all? III. O Lord, Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit: deliver them from the lion s mouth, that hell may not swallow them up, and may they not fall into darkness; but let St. Michael lead them into the eternal light you promised to Abraham and his seed. Lord, we offer sacrifices and prayers: receive them on behalf of those souls we commemorate today. Lord, grant that they pass from death to life, as you promised Abraham and seed. The Parable of the Old Man and the Young Man (Bar/T) So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went, And took the fire with him and a knife. And as they sojourned both of them together, Isaac, the first-born spake and said, My Father,

Behold the preparations, fire and iron, But where the lamb for this burnt-offering? Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps, And builded parapets and trenches there, And stretched forth the knife to slay his son. When lo! An angel called him out of heaven, Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, Neither do anything to him. Behold, A ram caught in the thicket by its horns; Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him. But the old man would not so, but slew his son,-- And half the seed of Europe, one by one. IV. Sanctus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabbaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of Sabbaoth. Heaven and earth are filled with you glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The End (Baritone) After the blast of lightning from the East, The flourish of low clouds, the Chariot Throne; After the drums of Time have rolled and ceased, And by the bronze west long retreat is blown, Shall life renew these bodies? Of a truth All death will He annul, all tears assuage? Fill the void veins of Life again with youth, And wash, with an immortal water, Age? When I do ask white Age he saith not so: My head hangs weighed with snow. And when I hearken to the Earth, she saith: My fiery heart shrinks, aching. It is death. Mine ancient scars shall not be glorified, Nor my titanic tears, the sea, be dried. V. Agnus Dei Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem aeternam. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them Rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest. At a Calvary near the Ancre (Tenor) One ever hangs where shelled roads part, In this war He too lost a limb, But His disciples hide apart; And now the Soldiers bear with Him. Near Golgotha strolls many a priest,

And in their faces there is pride That they were flesh-marked by the Beast, By whom the gentle Christ s denied. VI. Libera me, Domine Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day: when the heavens and the earth shall be moved: when Thou shalt come to judge the earth with fire. Dread and trembling have laid hold on me, and I fear exceedingly because of the judgment and wrath to come; when heaven and earth shall move. Day of wrath, day of calamity and misery. Deliver me, O Lord Strange Meeting (Tenor/Baritone) It seemed that out of battle I escaped Down some profound tunnel, long since scooped Through granites which titanic wars had groined. Yet also there encumbered groaned, Too fast in thought or death to be disturbed. Then, as I probed them, one sprang up, and stared With piteous recognition in fixed eyes, Lifting distressful hands as if to bless. And no guns thumped, or down the flues made moan. Strange friend, I said, here is no cause to mourn. None, said the other, save the undone years, The hopelessness. Whatever hope was yours, Was my life also; I went hunting wild After the wildest beauty in the world. For by my glee might many men have laughed, And of my weeping something had been left, Which must die now. I mean the truth untold, The pity of war, the pity war distilled. Now men will go content with what we spoiled. Or, discontent, boil bloody, and be spilled. They will be swift with swiftness of the tigress, None will break ranks, though nations trek from progress. Miss we the march of this retreating world Into vain citadels that are not walled. Then, when much blood had clogged their chariot wheels I would go up and wash them from sweet wells, Even from wells we sunk too deep for war, Even the sweetest wells that ever were. I am the enemy you killed, my friend. I knew you in this dark; for so you frowned Yesterday through me as jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Let us sleep now

VII. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: Et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen. The angels will lead you into paradise: at your arrival the Martyrs shall bear you Up and lead you into the Holy City, Jerusalem. The angelic chorus will sustain You and with Lazarus the pauper you shall have eternal rest. Lord, grant to them Eternal rest; and let perpetual light shine Upon them. Rest in peace. Amen.
