BREAKING OF BREAD BIBLE STUDY NOTES

Be Doers of the Word & Not Hearers Only James 1: But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Transcription:

I would like to begin by sharing a story I heard about this little boy who was in class working diligently on his ABC Memory Book. He always looked like a little professor at school. His mother took him to an eye specialist, who had the young chap sit on the chair for examination. He placed the card with the letters on the wall in front of him and said, "Will you read it for me, please?" Sure enough, the boy did not hesitate for a moment and said distinctly, "A--All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned everyone to his own way." Here is a young man who has taken the word of God off the sacred pages of the Bible and firmly implanted them into his heart. The last time we saw that James gave us three warnings to help us become mature Christians. He said, be quick to listen, slow to speak and be slow to anger. And remember he s talking about these things in regards to us being open to the word of God. And so James is going to share with us today how we as Christians need to allow God s word to be firmly planted in our hearts and how we need to show the world that His word does dwell within us, if we want to grow in our spiritual walk with Christ. And the first thing we need to recognise is that the word of God has power. James 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. If a boat is lost at sea and slowly sinking, they would usually send out a distress signal which they call SOS and as we know that stands for Save our Souls. And God willing the coast guard would hear that distress call and come and save them. Well in much the same way, ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the garden right up to the present day, mankind has been screaming out save our souls! And God heard that cry even before the signal was screamed out and He sent Jesus Christ to do the very thing our souls have been screaming out for. And the first thing which James tells us is that God has heard that cry and He has supplied our very own rescue pack to save us. James says that God s word, the Bible has the power to save our souls. Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:22-25 that His word has the power to make us new. 1 Peter 1:22-25 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you. James told us that the last time we were together in James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. And the reason it has that power is because of what that word contains, the Bible contains God s way of salvation. Now we know that the word "sanctify" means to "set apart for a holy purpose." And in His prayer, Jesus spoke of the sanctifying influence of God's Word, didn t He? He said in John 17:15-17 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. And so what James and Jesus are telling us this morning is that for us to grow up spiritually we need to understand that the Word of God has set us apart for His purpose. And when we finally realise the power of the Word of God, it should become clear that the Word is very important us as Christians. 1

Sadly were living in times where the Bible is often neglected, or abused or simply ignored all together. But as the Lord s people we need to be aware of its power and value in our lives. Because its only then can we truly benefit from the power of the word of God. 2 James again says in James 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. For us to benefit from God s word there are things which we need to get rid of in our lives. James mentions two of them, all filthiness and rampant wickedness. But please don t think that is it, Paul has a longer list of things we need to get rid of in Colossians 3:5-9 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices. Loved ones, if we truly want to grow up, if we truly want the Word of God to bear its fruit in our lives, then we first need to do some spiritual weeding. Because loved ones, we re not going to get anything out of any study of the Word if we continue to dwell on things which are spiritually filthy and wicked. When it comes to God s word we need to go about study with the right attitude. James 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. James says we need to receive God s word with meekness. If we want to grow spiritually, then we need to have an attitude of humility and interest. And the way to have those attitudes is by remembering two things, 1. We also are sinners and 2. We also can easily be deceived. You see some people go about studying God s word for all the wrong reasons. Some people study just to learn facts and show off how knowledgeable they are. Some people study to learn facts so that they can win debates with other religious groups. But James is telling us this morning that when we re studying, we re studying to learn God's truth not only to save our souls but also to save the souls of those people around us. That s why David prayed in Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. We cannot convince someone they need saving using the Bible if we don t look at the Bible and apply to ourselves first. I ve said this many times over the past couple of years and we really need to understand that if worship is not important to us, it won t be important to the non-christian who s watching us. If prayer isn t important to us, it won t be important to the children who live with us. If studying God s word isn t important to us, then it won t be important to anyone else who s thinking about become a Christian. And that s why James says in James 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word. James says it is only the "implanted" Word which can truly save our souls. In other words we need to be like the little boy we heard about at the start of our sermon, who had the word firmly implanted in his heart. We need to take the words out of the pages and implant them into our hearts. Because if we don t, then we are no better than the Jews who just gave lip service to their Words written on stone.

In fact that s a part of the covenant which sets us apart from the Jews. Hebrews 8:10 Now, this is the covenant that I will make with the people of Israel in the days to come, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. We need to take the word s written in ink from the Bible and not only read it and meditate upon it but we also need to do all of those things so much that it becomes a permanent fixture within our hearts. Because its only when we have it in our hearts can we do what it says. James 1:22-24 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. I heard about this woman in the country who went to hear a sermon about gossip and the sermon really got to her. So the next day, the minister, according to his custom, went among his hearers, he spoke to the woman, and asked her what she recollected from the sermon. The woman complained much of her bad memory, and said, she had forgotten almost all that he had delivered "but one thing," said she, "I remembered; I remembered that God hates divorce." You see loved ones a "doer of the word" cannot be a "forgetful hearer." Because if we forget to apply the word to ourselves first we become deceived. And we know that we cannot deceive God, we know that we cannot deceive the devil, so this means we usually end up deceiving ourselves. And so not only can God see through us, not only can the devil see through us, more than likely our children along with many other people can see through us. Let us not deceive ourselves loved ones, let s do what the word says. And one reason why we should do what it says is because of the blessing which comes from doing it. James 1:25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. There are blessings to be found not only by "looking into the perfect law of liberty" alone but also by "continuing in it," and being "a doer of the word." Yes we can find blessings like joy, peace and happiness through reading the Bible but the long term blessings come from faithfully doing what the Bible says. James calls the Word of God the "perfect law of liberty" why? Well simply because of its power to provide true freedom. Freedom from the guilt and dominion of sin and the power of the message within. Paul says in Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. So now that we understand the importance of God s word in our lives, James goes on and talks about making sure you belong to a religion that are doers of God s word. You see loved ones when it comes to choosing religion, people are more than happy to leave out the Bible or choose a religion which suits their needs. Some people see religion almost like a spare tyre; it s used only in the case of an emergency. Some people see religion like a wheelbarrow; it s easily upset and must be pushed. Others see religion like a bus; it s used only when it goes your way. But whatever people see religion as; we need to understand that unless it is pleasing to God in heaven, it has no value whatsoever. In other words, people need to know that their religion is acceptable to God. And James kindly tells us what kind of religion is acceptable to God in James 1:27 What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world. 3

The religion which God accepts is the religion which is pure and genuine. And one of the ways to recognise if we are apart of this religion which is pure and genuine is by asking the question, is our religion a practicing religion? In other words are we practicing what we preach? Are we hearers and doers of God s word? You see having a religion is meaningless unless we do something with it. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who calls me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only those who do what my Father in heaven wants them to do. He also said in Luke 6:46 Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and yet don't do what I tell you? You see loved ones this should be important to us because it was important to James. So important that he s going to emphasise this point a little later in James 2:14-17+26 and talk about how our faiths has to have legs attached to it. Does our religion go beyond the walls of our meeting place? Does our religion go beyond the printed pages of the Bible? Does our religion go beyond a superficial hearing of the Word? And what I m saying loved ones, is that if any religion isn t a practicing religion then it is a dead religion. But not only should our religion be a practicing religion it should also be a practical religion. James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. Does our religion consist of more than just going to church, reading, and praying? Does our religion reach out and show itself in compassion to those in need? God never intended our religion just to come together each Lord s Day. And although this is very important for us to do, God also intended our religion to stretch out ours hands in service to others. We re supposed to help others by doing good to others in His Name. Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. John also tells us in 1 John 3:17+18 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. In others words, it doesn t matter how many youth clubs the church has going. It doesn t matter how awesome the preachers are. It doesn t matter how big numerically a congregation may be. All the preaching, teaching, and studying we do, doesn t make our religion pure and genuine. What makes it pure and genuine is applying the Word of God in our lives. And we do that by showing kindness and compassion for the poor and helpless. Now again not only should our religion be a practicing religion and a practical religion, it should also be a personal religion. Look at James 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. James uses the word, anyone, he uses the words he and his. Look at James 1:24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. Again he uses the words himself and he. Look at James 1:25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. He uses the words, the one and he again. Look at James 1:26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Again he uses the words, "anyone," "he," "his" and this one's." Now look at James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. He uses the word "oneself." Do you what I m getting at here? 4

Our religion is very personal; we know that we happily give to the Lord each week to help with the Lord s work throughout different parts of the world. But that offering we give was never designed to be the only time we give. Because it never ceases to amaze me how some people think that their giving on Sunday fulfils their responsibility to the poor, the widows, and the orphans. 5 They seem to think that their giving on a Sunday fulfils their obligation to preach the gospel. And although this is true and right, when we give together our giving only meets certain needs. Loved ones God still expects us to fulfil our "personal" service to the poor, widows, and orphans as we have the ability and opportunity. That s one of the principles we find within the Old Testament. Deuteronomy 14:27-29 "Do not neglect the Levites who live in your towns; they have no property of their own. At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in your towns. This food is for the Levites, since they own no property, and for the foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in your towns. They are to come and get all they need. Do this, and the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. In other words although the third year tithe was for the widows and orphans, they were to always help them whenever they had the opportunity. And so what I m saying is that as Christians we need to make our religion personal because we can't pay someone else to do our work for us. And we can t excuse ourselves by saying, "well, I gave at the church." Can you imagine some homeless person coming up to you asking for money for a meal and our reply is, Oh I m sorry its only Tuesday can you wait until Sunday and I will ask the church to help? True religion which is pleasing to God is always looking for an opportunity to give and serve anyone who is in need. It goes beyond what we may do in conjunction with others. It includes our personal involvement apart from what others may do. And so loved ones to finish with I want to ask this question, how can we be part of a pure religion, if we are far from being pure? Now this is an important question which we need to answer because in today s society and in some religions there seems to be an ever growing problem of immorality and materialism. And loved ones these things can also a big problem for the Lord s church. Because James reminds us in James 1:27 that the religion which pleases God needs not only to be genuine but also pure. The word pure means without blemish. Some translations use the word undefiled which means untainted or unspotted. But if we are sinners, which we are, 1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we are sinners how can we ever be pure, undefiled, and unspotted? The answer is found in 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. The answer is found in the blood of Christ and when we walk in the light with God, then the blood of Christ will cleans us and makes us pure. But that involves obedience doesn t it? 1 John 2:3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. You see loved ones; those who are not yet Christians, those who have never been baptised into Christ can experience this cleansing of the blood for the very first time when they obey Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

If people would repent and be baptised into Christ they would experience that blood cleansing moment and be pure. But as we all know that pureness doesn t last long does it? It s not long before we start sinning again. But there is good news, 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 6 John says that the baptised Christians can also experience the continuous cleansing of the blood when they confess their sins to God. And so what James is saying to us all this morning is that with Christ s blood and help from God who offers us a way out of our temptations according 1 Corinthians 10:13, it is possible to be pure, undefiled, and unspotted by the world. A missionary in India spoke near a fountain on the subject, "Jesus, the Water of Life." A Muslim interrupted, "Your religion is like this little stream of water, but Islam is like a great ocean!" "Yes," said the missionary, "but there is this difference: When men drink ocean water they die of thirst. When they drink the water of life which Christ gives, they live forever!" The stream is small, but it can satisfy your thirst. Jesus Christ came into the world as a little baby so that He might show that no one is so little or so insignificant that the great God will not come to dwell within him. So what makes the Lord s church so different from all other religious groups? Well other religions may be practicing, they may be practical and they may even be personal. But it s only the true religion of Jesus Christ that can present a person "pure" in the sight of God. That s the religion we should be a part of. If after reading this you want to know more about being a part of a Bible based religion or if this sermon has raised other questions in your thoughts then please just contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. God bless and thanks for taking the time to grow in your understanding of God s Word.
