For many, it was a very refreshing breath of air to feel God s presence in our society through his appointed Vicar on earth. It was so good to feel how Pope Francis assured us that we are loved in spite of our shortcomings, and that God s mercy is always within reach. It was also an opportunity for us to show that we are a good people and a predominantly Christian nation that continues to believe in God and that we continue to search for the truth that the Gospel brings. He assured us that Our Father will not be outdone in generosity and He continues to scatter seeds. He scatters the seeds of his presence in our world, for love consists in this, not that we have loved God but that he loved us irst. That love gives us a profound certainty: we are sought by God; He waits for us. (Homily at World Meeting of Families) He continued on to say that this truth can be experienced by the family through the word of the Lord which invites faithful families to share the prophecy of the covenant of man and woman, which generates life and reveals God! Anyone who wants to bring into this world a family which teaches children to be excited by every gesture aimed at overcoming evil a family which shows that the Spirit is alive and at work will encounter our gratitude and our appreciation. Today, we heard the Pharisees challenge Jesus regarding the question of divorce a matter that is very touchy in our times. We know that biblical Jewish Society where Jesus grew up accepted divorce, and that Moses allowed them to do it. But in Jesus words, he clari ied that it was not the plan of his Father from the beginning. Man and woman are supposed to stay together they are no longer two, but one lesh. Therefore, let no man separate what God has joined. Married couples therefore are supposed to stay together as husband and wife till death do they part. On the other hand, we know that it is easier said than done. Even Pope Francis quipped that sometimes people tell me, Father, you can easily say that because you are not married! Families have dif iculties families, we quarrel. And sometimes plates can ly. Children bring headache, and I won t even speak about mothers-in-law to the laughter of the audience. (This Pope really rocks!) There are REAL challenges within the context of marriage: individual personality, upbringing that determine opinion and decision making, inances, and many others. The Church is aware of these realities. But the Pope continued on to say that those dif iculties can be overcome by love. Hatred is not capable of dealing with any dif iculty only love is able to overcome them. This is why married people are always encouraged to sacri ice, to be faithful, to be forgiving, and are reminded of their marriage vows to love and honor one another for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health and stay together through good and bad times. God will never lack in granting his help to those who seek as Jesus said, ask and you will be given, seek and you will ind, knock and it will be opened. If married couples keep holding on to God in prayer and remain with Him through the Sacraments, challenges will be overcome, and obstacles will be hurdled. Let us continue to pray for stronger marriages and families in our society. Notes: Reminding all Liturgical Ministry Volunteers please come to our Evening of Re lection this Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7 PM. Let us celebrate together in prayer and re lect on how blessed we are because God has given us the privilege to serve Him through our parish. Then next Sunday, I will be ful illing a dream of being able to see the City of Rome, trace our Church s rich history and re lect on the sacri ices made to ful ill Jesus mandate to go and make disciples of all nations. I will be praying for you. Pray for me too, and please pray that I get a glimpse of the Holy Father even from 150 yards away. GOD LOVES YOU ALL VERY DEARLY. In Christ, FR. ROMY

F bout one-third of marriages end in divorce in the United States. The reasons for such an outcome are as varied as the individuals involved. Few of those who do divorce experience the high-pro ile questioning and scrutiny that public igures like celebrities or politicians do when they go through a divorce. Recent events in the past few months show that the private lives of public igures are never really private. The Gospel this weekend tackles the closest of human relationships: the marriage of a man and a woman. In Mark's story, Jesus quotes the Book of Genesis, pushing together verses from the irst and second chapters. In the irst chapter of Genesis, humankind is created male and female in the divine image. In the second story of creation in chapter 2, the creation of woman is described as coming out of man, which is why the man now clings to his wife and the two become one. In re lecting this biblical understanding of marriage, the church expects that a sacramental marriage between a man and a woman is permanent, a sign of the union between Christ and his people. At the same time, for a variety of reasons, the church recognizes that not every marriage may be a full and complete sacramental union. Sometimes the love that was professed on the wedding day was not a full and freely given consent to be joined together as one. That is why after a divorce, one or the other party may seek an annulment through the church, recognizing that the irst union was not the full and complete sign of unity that is an example of Christ's complete love for us. If you, or someone you know, are divorced, please be a part of Sunday worship with the community of faith. If you've not yet spoken with a priest about your situation call the parish of ice to make a con idential appointment. As the Gospel suggests, Christ wants to embrace all his children. ~Lpi T R L S R L We believe life is the most basic gift of a loving God. Respect Life calls us to understand that every person has value and dignity, because every person is created by God in his image. For more info please stop by the Respect Life table after Mass. Envelopes are available in the Narthex. PRAYER for LIFE Heavenly Father, from the smallest cell to the largest creature, you are the origin and creator of all life. May we be so in awe of your wondrous power that we never take for granted the wonder of life, the beauty of creation or the potential of every person. We recognize the value and worth of human life, from conception to natural death. Help us to protect and nurture all life so that in perfect harmony we may offer to you a itting song of living praise. We ask this through Jesus, your Son, who lives and reigns forever. Amen. ~Rev. Gaffney Please pray for the repose of the souls of: Pete Martinez David Elmo During the Month of October, we will be reciting the Rosary immediately after the am Mass during the week from Monday through Friday. Faith always leads to witness. Faith is a meeting with Jesus Christ, with God, and it is born from that and leads you to witness. Your baptism challenges you to witness your faith in and relationship with Christ by proclaiming him to others and inviting them to share your joy. ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? Our parish offers an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Con irmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. Inquiry sessions are on Thursday nights at 6:30 pm in JXXIII. For info please contact Leota in the Faith Formation Office. F A F F B THIS! Our Adult Faith Formation program with Bishop Robert Barron s Word on Fire study program on The Mystery of God: Who God is and Why God Matters, has begun. This week (October 5th & 8th) we continue with our second session titled St. Thomas Aquinas and the Paths to God. Information is at the AFF web. http://bit.ly/1il8ojs. Even if you ve missed the first session, join us this week! ADULT CONFIRMATION Are you a baptized Catholic (18 years of age or older) who still needs to celebrate the Sacrament of Con irmation? Have you been asked to be a godparent or sponsor for the baptism or con irmation of a relative or friend, but have had to say, No, because you aren t con irmed? For info on preparation for and celebration of the sacrament here at Resurrection parish, please go to our Adult Faith Formation Web at http://bit.ly/1jyorad for more information.
