TRANSITION Time WELCOME Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Ask kids to share some things they think will happen in the future. What do they think will happen later today, later this week, or later this year? 1 T I M E 2 TABLE CENTERS Table Centers (Miscellaneous Activities) Future News / Prophecy Match activity page, 1 per kid pencils, crayons, markers Invite kids to work individually or in pairs to complete the activity page Future News. Kids should rearrange the word boxes to fill in the definition of the word prophecy ( a word from God to a group of people ). Say Throughout the Old Testament, God gave messages, or prophecies, through the prophets. Today we are going to hear some messages about Jesus birth that came hundreds of years before Jesus was born! As time allows, lead kids to complete the activity page Prophecy Match. Provide Bibles to help kids match the Old Testament prophecies about Jesus birth with the New Testament fulfillments. 3 SESSION STARTER Option 1: Make Predictions Explain to kids that in 1952, a newspaper published an article about what some famous scientists said the world would be like 50 years later (2002). Read some of the predictions: Cures for most diseases will be discovered, and the average person will live to be 100 years old. People will travel through space on rocket ships and visit other planets. Fresh water will be collected from the sea so that deserts, like the African Sahara, will become gardens. Say Did those predictions come true? No. Doctors have made great advances in treating disease, but it still exists. And we still don t take vacations to Jupiter. What do you think the world will be like in 50 years? Prompt kids to consider the following questions: Where will we live? What will we eat? How will we travel? Say In today s Bible story, we are going to read some things the prophets said about Jesus birth hundreds of years before it happened! 4 TRANSITION Option 2: What s Coming? paper bag colored candy pieces individually wrapped candies (optional) Allergy Alert Place candies in the bag. Guide kids to line up single file. Explain that you will pull a piece of candy from a bag. Kids should try to guess what color the candy will be. Prompt the first kid in line to guess. Then pull a candy from the bag. If he is correct, he should move to the end of the line. Otherwise, he should sit down. Put the candy back in the bag. Continue playing until only one kid remains, or as time allows. Individually wrapped candies are provided for the kids to enjoy. Please return the colored candy pieces to the Session Starter bin for the next class to use. Say Was it difficult to guess the color of candy? Making an accurate prediction is hard! Only God knows the future. In today s Bible story, we will hear about some prophets who said some things about Jesus birth hundreds of years before He was born! TO LESSON Page 2

LESSON Time Suggested Theme Decorating Ideas: Decorate your space using traditional Christmas elements. Set up a nativity scene at the front of the room. Hang garland or string lights near the ceiling. You may choose to invite kids to help with decorations by making a paper chain with red and green construction paper. If you are in the middle of another unit s theme, add the Christmas elements to the existing theme. 1 COUNT DOWN countdown video (insert provided DVD with lesson videos and worship) Show the countdown video as you clean-up table centers, set up classroom chairs for lesson and set it to end as large group time begins. 2 LESSON INTRO leader attire notepad pencil [Large Group Leader enters wearing a press hat and carrying a notepad and pencil. He or she scribbles a few notes before closing the notepad and addressing kids.] Leader Hello, there! My name s [your name]. Pleasure to meet you. You ll have to excuse me; I was just taking some notes. You see, I m a reporter. The editor-in-chief just gave me a new assignment: to research the details of Jesus birth because people want to know! This is the perfect time because everyone is getting ready to celebrate Jesus birth. Hey, do you think you can help me? Let s get started! 3 TIME LINE M A P Timeline Map small group visual pack (Additional copies provided for Table Time Review) Point out the timeline map. Leader This is the first place the editor-in-chief told me to start looking for details about Jesus birth. This looks like a timeline. Today s Bible story is called Prophets Told About Jesus Birth. [Point to Isaiah Confonted Ahaz and Micah, Prophet to Judah. ] Now that s interesting. The news I report has usually already happened, but long ago, God gave messages to prophets. They reported news hundreds of years before it happened! This news was called prophecy. B I G 4 PICTURE QUESTION Big Picture Question: How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? - 11x17 poster provided Leader Speaking of prophecy, that leads me to our big picture question. This is a very important question we must answer. Our big picture question is, How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Now, if I m not careful, I might report incorrect information, like that the city council meeting was on Thursday when it was actually on Wednesday. I wonder if the prophets ever said something about Jesus birth that didn t come true. Why don t I read the Bible story, and you see if you can figure out the answer to our big picture question? Page 3

LESSON Time video TELL Bibles, 1 per kid THE BIBLE Bible Story Picture 11x17 poster provided Big Picture Question: How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? 11x17 poster provided 5 STORY Tip: A Bible story script is provided at the end of every session. You may use it to guide you as you prepare to teach the Bible story in your own words. For a shorter version of the Bible story, read only the bolded text. Open your Bible to Isaiah 7:1-14; 9:1-7; 11:1-5; and Micah 5:2. Tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video. Leader God s people were in a sad situation. After sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, all people were separated from God. God is holy, and He can t be around sin. God gave His people the law to show them how to be holy, but no matter how hard the people tried, they could not obey the law perfectly. And because they sinned, they deserved to die. God s people needed to be rescued from their sin. They needed someone who could obey the law perfectly and fix their relationship with God. No one on earth was good enough, but God loved His people and had a plan. God s plan was not a secret plan. Throughout the Old Testament, God gave messages to prophets who told God s people what was going to happen. God promised to send a Messiah a Savior to save people from sin and death. He even told the prophets Isaiah and Micah specific details about how the Savior would come into the world. God said that Jesus was going to be born into the family of King David. God told Micah that the Savior would be born in a town called Bethlehem. Did these things really happen? Yes! Hundreds of years after God gave these messages to the prophets, everything the prophets Isaiah and Micah said about Jesus came true. Can you answer our big picture question? How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. How do you feel when you think about something that is going to happen in the future like a birthday party or family vacation? Sometimes things can come up to keep these plans from happening, but God had a plan to send Jesus long before His Son was born. Nothing stopped God s plan. How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. God promised His people that He would send a Savior, and God always keeps His promises. 6 GOSPEL Bibles Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Tell kids how they can respond, and provide teachers to speak with each kid individually. Guide teachers to use open-ended questions to allow kids to determine the direction of the conversation. Encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. Page 4

7 LESSON Time WORSHIP TIME notepad pencil Worship Song: A Little More Love (on provided DVD) Leader Did you catch the answer to our big picture question during the Bible story? The question I m trying to find the answer to is, How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Do you know the answer? [Flip open notepad and pretend to write down the answer as kids reply.] Thank you! Wow! Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. That makes me want to sing. Will you sing with me? Play A Little More Love and encourage kids to sing together. 8 KEY PASSAGE Bibles Key Passage Poster: Isaiah 9:6 (11x17 poster, provided) Worship Song: Born to Us (on provided DVD) Display the key passage poster. Lead the kids to read it aloud together. Then call for the boys to read the key passage aloud. Call on the girls to read it after them. Leader Our key passage is found in the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet. He said that a child was coming who would be for the people, given to the people. This child would be a gift from God! Who was Isaiah talking about in this passage? (Jesus) Great job. We will work on memorizing the key passage so we can know God s Word. Let s sing a song to help us. Lead the group in singing Born to Us song. 9 DISCUSSION STARTER discussion starter video (on provided DVD) Leader How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. That s amazing! God knows the future. Watch this video. Show the Unit 28 Session 1 video. Leader Has anyone ever told you something was going to happen, but it never did? Did you feel disappointed? God knows the future because He is in control. Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. 10 PRAYER Leader Great work today! I think you all would make excellent reporters. I hope you ll come back and help me with my next assignment. Let s pray before you go to your small groups. Pray, thanking God for giving hope to His people long before Jesus came into the world. Thank Him for always keeping His promises. Pray that kids would tell others about Jesus so that people who do not know Him would have hope too. 11 TRANSITION TO TABLES Page 5

(poster provided) 1 BIBLE STORY REVIEW Scripture reference cards Note: Review the timeline in the small group visual pack. Retell or review the Bible story in your own words, or use the bolded text of the Bible story script. Provide a Bible for each kid. Guide boys and girls to find the Book of Isaiah in the Bible. Ask them which testament the Book of Isaiah is in. (Old Testament) Guide kids to use the table of contents if they need help. The following Scripture references are provided on separate slips of paper. There are several sets provided so each kid has one card: Isaiah 7:1-14; Isaiah 9:1-7; Isaiah 11:1-5; Micah 5:2. Distribute the cards and lead each kid to find his assigned passage in the Bible. Direct kids to use the Bible to answer the following questions about the Bible story. For each review question, supply the reference and call for kids with that assigned passage to find the answer. Whom would God choose to be Jesus mother? (a virgin, a woman who was not yet married; Isaiah 7:14) What did the prophet Isaiah say the son s name would be? (Immanuel, Isaiah 7:14) What four names did Isaiah say the child would be called? (Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace; Isaiah 9:6) What did Isaiah say would be on the son s shoulders? If you choose to review with boys and girls how to become a Christian, explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another leader if they have questions. (See Page 10 of the curriculum.) 2 K E Y PASSAGE REVIEW ACTIVITY Echos Throughout Scripture Key Passage Poster: Isaiah 9:6 dry erase board and markers (optional) Make sure the key passage, Isaiah 9:6, is visible for each child, either as the slide, printed poster, or written on a dry erase board. Read the verse together. Say All the names Isaiah gave to the future Savior were echoed at some point throughout the New Testament. That means we see Jesus as all those things in Scripture. Why don t we play a little echo game of our own? Form three groups based on where the kids are seated. Choose one group to say the first word of the key passage, followed by the second group, and then the third group. Point to each group when it is their turn to say the first word. Continue until each group completes the verse. Repeat, starting with another group. If you like, invite all the kids to say the verse echoing each word on their own. Demonstrate how to echo with your own voice. Page 6

TABLE Time 3 ACTIVITY CHOICES Option 1: Announcement Relay slips of paper with Announcements buckets (x2) Several cards are provided with easy-to-read statements the children have learned in this session. Two sets are provided. Place each set in a separate bucket. Here are some examples: God loved His people and had a plan. A Savior is coming. A child was coming who would be for the people, given to the people. This child would be a gift from God! Jesus was going to be born into the family of King David. God made a promise. God will be with us. The promised one will be born. The Savior will be born in Bethlehem. The Savior will be called Mighty God. God knows the future because He is in control. Form two groups and invite each to line up single file. Set a bucket of cards at an equal distance from each team. The first kid in each line should run to his team s bowl of cards, draw one, and read the announcement with great enthusiasm. That player will then run back and tag the next player who will do the same as the first. Say God sent announcements like these to His people many times. Each of these prophesies came true. How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. Option 2: Newspaper Posters newspapers or magazines scissors glue sticks construction paper Big Picture Question poster Provide scissors, glue sticks, and construction paper for each kid. Display the big picture question poster. Lead kids to look through newspapers and cut out letters to spell out the big picture answer, Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. Instruct them to glue the letters in order to make newspaper posters of the big picture answer. Say God spoke through the prophets Isaiah and Micah. They told God s people what would happen when the promised Messiah was born. Let s say our big picture question and answer together. How many prophecies about Jesus birth actually happened? Everything God said about Jesus birth came true. 4 PRAYER T I M E Say Only God knows the future, and He revealed to the prophets some details about Jesus birth hundreds of years before it happened! God is in control of all things, and we can trust Him with the future. Invite kids to share any prayer requests they have. Encourage them to pray for those requests during the week. Close in prayer, praising God for giving people hope by promising to send Jesus and for keeping His promise. Page 7

Supplemental Teacher RESOURCES HISTORY BACKGROUND When Adam and Eve introduced sin into the world, all of creation fell under a curse. (See Genesis 3:17-19.) We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We ve inherited the curse of death from Adam. (See Romans 3:23; 5:12.) Throughout the Old Testament, the consequences of sin are obvious. God s people were separated from Him; they did not enjoy the intimate relationship with their Creator for which He had created them. God s people were affected by sickness and pain. Corruption spread quickly throughout the earth. The situation seemed hopeless, yet God did not leave His people without hope. It was into this hopelessness that God spoke. Hundreds of messages came through the prophets concerning a coming Messiah One who would rescue people from their sins. But when would this Promised One come? How would He come? Would the people recognize Him? The prophets Isaiah and Micah who both lived hundreds of years before Jesus was born spoke specifically of the Messiah s birth. Isaiah told King Ahaz what the Lord would do. The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). He described the birth of a Prince of Peace a Son of David who will reign forever. (Isaiah 9:6-7) Isaiah said that He would be a King! (Isaiah 11:1-5) The prophet Micah named the specific town Bethlehem in which Jesus would be born. (Micah 5:2) As you teach kids about the prophecies concerning Jesus birth, help them understand that everything God said about Jesus birth came true. Hundreds of years later, Jesus was born into the world. God s plan to rescue people from sin was not a secret plan. God gave His people hope: A Savior is coming. Though death came through Adam, life comes through Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:22) Through His death on the cross, Jesus finished the work for our salvation. In Him lies our hope of forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus reconciles to God those who trust in Him. Page 8

Supplemental Teacher RESOURCES B I B L E STUDY OVERVIEW Isaiah 7:1-14; 9:1-7; 11:1-5; Micah 5:2 Long before Jesus was born, some of God s prophets told people that Jesus would come. The prophets words are written in the Old Testament. Two of the men who told about Jesus birth were the prophet Isaiah and the prophet Micah. Isaiah the prophet lived hundreds of years before Jesus was born on earth. The first message about Jesus was about who Jesus mother would be and who Jesus would be. Isaiah said, The Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel. Isaiah said that God would choose a woman who was not yet married, and she would be Jesus mother. He said too that one of Jesus names would be Immanuel, which means God with us. Some time later, Isaiah talked about Jesus again. He said, A child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Even more names for Jesus! All these names tell us who Jesus is and the great things He would do. Jesus was coming to earth to help people and protect people. Jesus would be a king who cares about His people, and He would bring peace to the whole world. Isaiah s third message was about Jesus family and His power. Isaiah said that Jesus would be part of Jesse s family. Jesse was King David s father. Isaiah said that God s Spirit would be with Jesus, and Jesus would be wise and strong. Jesus would do the right thing, and He would be a fair ruler. Finally, the prophet Micah told about where Jesus would be born. Micah said that Jesus would be born in a town called Bethlehem. Micah also said that Jesus would be ruler over Israel. Hundreds of years later, everything the prophets Isaiah and Micah said about Jesus came true. C H R I S T CONNECTION Christ Connection: God s plan to save people from sin and death was not a secret plan. God used the prophets to give hope to His people. They said God would send a Messiah born into the world as a baby to live the perfect life people fail to live and die the guilty death we deserve. Page 9

Supplemental Teacher RESOURCES THE GOSPEL GOD S PLAN FOR ME Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. GOD - - - - - - - RULES. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean. WE - - - - - - - - - - SINNED. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) GOD - - - - - - - - - - - - - PROVIDED. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. JESUS WE - - - - - - - - GIVES. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RESPOND. We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. Page 10

If the family member guesses correctly, allow him to guess again. His turn ends when he guesses incorrectly. After each family member s turn, see who guessed correctly the most times. Write the results below. Talk about how we can only guess about what is going to happen in the future, but God never has to guess. Everything God told His prophets about Jesus birth happened.
