Catechetical year 2020 2011 Dear Parents and Guardians, St. Jude Church Office of Religious Education 92 455 Makakilo Drive Kapolei, HI 96707 Phone: (808) 672 8669 ext. 212 Fax: 672 3779 E mail: bonnie@stjudehawaii.org Welcome to St. Jude s Religious Education program. Thank you for entrusting your wonderful child/children to us. We are here to support you in your role as the primary educator of your child/children. Together we will help them to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to become loving, compassionate Christians, concerned about others and vibrant members of a Catholic faith community. The Diocese of Honolulu has stated that preparation for First Communion must take 2 years which means your child/children must attend grade one. If not your child/childrenren will be placed in a pre First Communion class and will not receive the sacrament until the two years of preparation are completed. This handbook includes procedures and other pertinent information regarding our Religious Education programs. Please take a few minutes to review this information with your child/children. We value your insights and welcome your involvement in their religious education. If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or suggestions please contact me at the parish office (672 8669 ext. 212). The Religious Education Team thanks you and looks forward to having a great spirit filled year with your family. Yours in Christ, Bonnie Boquer Director of Religious Education

St. Jude Mission Statement We, the community of St. Jude, commit ourselves to Jesus Christ, our Savior, His teachings and the Traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we embrace and nurture our culturally diverse community through worship, evangelization, renewal and service. *** This handbook is primarily a means of communication. It is meant to provide you, the parents/guardians, with helpful information on how we intend to go about our mission in serving you and your children. St. Jude Catholic Church Religious Education Department reserves the right to amend this handbook as necessary in accordance with the Diocese of Honolulu Office of Religious Education. You will be notified in writing if changes are made to any information, policy or procedure contained in this handbook. Please review this booklet as it contains pertinent information regarding our programs and other procedures. REGISTRATION & FEES: Because of the increase in the cost of books and supplies the St. Jude Religious Education Program will now charge a registration fee. $35.00/child for the catechetical year Family rate (two or more siblings) $60.00 for the catechetical year Children in First Communion Preparation and RCIC $45.00 for the catechetical year (they have 3 books no family discount for children in sacramental preparation.) SESSION TIMES: Religious Education (Grades Pre-K, to Grade 8) meets on Sunday, from 12:30p.m to 1:30 p.m. ABSENCES: Children preparing to receive the sacraments are allowed 3 unexcused absences. If the child is consistently absent the DRE will meet with the parents/guardians to assess the child s readiness to receive the sacraments.

BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE: The Religious Education classes share class space in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR), in the church and lanai areas. It is expected that our students behave in a Christian manner: each child respects their fellow students, catechist, catechist s aide and other adult volunteers and the property of others; each child participates and cooperates in class. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated during religious education classes, retreats, and prayer services. The following behavior is considered unacceptable: Consistently talking out of turn and interrupting the catechist and class. Using inappropriate language. Biting, kicking, spitting on or hitting another student or adult. Bullying. Threatening another student or adult with physical harm. In the event of continuous unacceptable behavior: The catechist will report the incident to the DRE. The DRE will meet with the student and parents to discuss the behavior of the student. If the behavior continues, the DRE will notify the Pastor and the student will be asked not to attend religious education classes until his/her behavior improves. COMMUNICATION: Information and events are communicated through a Religious Education memo/flyer, St. Jude Religious Education website (stjudehawaii.org) and/or parish bulletin.
