Greeting & Announcements: - Greeting - Saying good morning to one another - A few announcements before we get going: o o OTHER: o OTHER: WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD (WL:) Today we continue our journey of allowing God to expose the idols in our heart. While the first commandment: You shall have no other gods is perhaps easy to memorize, but challenging to really apply consistently. Today we look at the Seduction of Success While achieving and accomplishing things with our God-given talents is a good thing, sometimes success seduces us to think and focus as if it is the ultimate thing. As with the other idols, we pray the Lord exposes them and once again reorients us to himself. Through our worship today, I pray that God s Spirit fills your heart and mind and soul with the ultimate thing, God himself let s worship him he alone is worthy of our worship and praise! SONG: You re Worthy of Praise Congregation sings bold words in parentheses I will worship (I will worship) With all of my heart (with all of my heart) I will praise You (I will praise You) With all of my strength (all my strength) I will seek You (I will seek You) All of my days (all of my days) I will follow (I will follow) All of Your ways (all Your ways) 1
I will give You all my worship I will give You all my praise You alone I long to worship You alone are worthy of my praise I will bow down (I will bow down) And hail You as King (and hail You as King) I will serve You (I will serve You) Give You everything (everything) I will lift up (I will lift up) My eyes to Your throne (my eyes to Your throne) I will trust You (I will trust You) Trust You alone (You alone) I will give You all my worship I will give You all my praise You alone I long to worship You alone are worthy of my praise CCLI Song # 487976 David Ruis 1991 Shade Tree Music [BLANK SLIDE: We pause to confess our sins.] TRANSITION (WL): While we know that the Lord is worthy of ALL of our worship and ALL of our praise, we know that all too often he doesn t receive all of it. As we look at the counterfeit god of success today, the sin we need to confess is the seeking of praise for ourselves. Success brings praise. Praise feeds and fills our egos. It makes us feel good and desire more. It is hard to deflect that praise toward others and ultimately toward God. Success is good, a blessing from the LORD. Yet success can be the very thing that pushes God out of first priority. As we pause to confess this morning, I invite you to personally confess to God the ways that your pride, craving for affirmation, and idolizing success have been filled with things other than the Lord. Music continues as we pause to personally confess. [BLANK SLIDE: We rejoice to receive forgiveness!] Ultimate success is found in Jesus Christ. Any of our accomplishments pale in comparison to the success he had at overcoming Satan with his life death and resurrection. His success he made our success by freely applying to our account his complete payment for sin. He assures us he loves us, our sins are forgiven, and the crown of life is ours. May the reality of God s grace shown to you, drive you to use all he has given you to the best of your ability. And when he gives success to our labors, may our boast be simply in Jesus Christ and his love for us. 2
SONG: How Deep the Father s Love How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything No gifts no pow r no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom CCLI Song # 1558110 Stuart Townend 1995 Thankyou Music 3
WE LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD [BLANK SLIDE: We LISTEN to the Word of God.] TRANSITION (WL): The Lord puts our human wisdom in perspective it has its limitations. Let us always rely on the wisdom of God and let our boast always be in the Lord! First Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1:20-31 Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord! 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord. TRANSITION (WL): Jesus teaches that success is found in being willing to serve. Second Lesson: Mark 9:33-37 Success comes through service. 33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, What were you arguing about on the road? 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. 35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. 36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me. 4

He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the LORD had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. 2 Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, If only my master would see 6
the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy. 4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5 By all means, go, the king of Aram replied. I will send a letter to the king of Israel. So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing. 6 The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy. 7 As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me! 8 When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel. 9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed. 11 But Naaman went away angry and said, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn t I wash in them and be cleansed? So he turned and went off in a rage. 13 Naaman s servants went to him and said, My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, Wash and be cleansed! 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. WE RESPOND TO THE WORD OF GOD STATEMENT of FAITH: Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. 7
He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
