Welcome to Zion Lutheran Church! 1732 S. Main St. Aberdeen, SD 57401 605-225-6755 Email: zion@nvc.net Website: www.zionlutheranaberdeen.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rooted in Faith * Growing in Spirit * Reaching out to Those in Need ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10:45 am Second Sunday after Epiphany January 17, 2016 The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of the glory of God to us as it was made known to the magi and to those on Jordan s banks at the baptism of Jesus today using wedding imagery. Our God rejoices over God s people as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride. By the power of the Spirit there are gifts galore for everyone. In Christ Jesus the best wine is saved for last. Taste and see. GATHERING MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP (please stand) Based on 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit who gives them. There are varieties of services, but the same Lord who is served. There are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates them in everyone. Each one is given a gift of the Spirit, to build up the whole body and to proclaim that Jesus is Lord. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Living God, we pray for forgiveness when our words and actions are shaped and molded by other than the Holy Spirit. For the times when we have used the gifts of your Spirit to enhance our own glory rather than using them to serve others. When our use of your gifts has led to division and discord rather than increasing understanding and unity. 1 For believing one gift to be superior to another rather than celebrating the various ways in which they complement each other and build up the whole community. The Holy Spirit enables us to confess Jesus as Lord and in so doing, we are acknowledging our total allegiance to, and love for Jesus. Merciful God, forgive any lack of commitment by us to love as Jesus loved and to serve as he served. Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit so that our worship, witness and service may reflect our unity and the faithful use of our diverse gifts. Amen. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS The good news is that God has continued to love and save us (Psalm 36 v.10) in and through Jesus - whom we confess as Savior and Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit. Hear these words of grace: In Jesus Christ you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! GATHERING SONG You re Worthy of My Praise David Ruis I will worship with all of my heart. I will praise You with all of my strength. I will seek You all of my days. I will follow all of Your ways. I will give You all my worship. I will bow down, hail You as King. I will serve You, give You everything. I will lift up my eyes to Your throne. I will trust You, trust You alone. I will give You all my worship. 2

I will give You all my worship. PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and salvation to his people. Transform us by your Holy Spirit, that we may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION (please be seated) All are welcome at the Lord s table. Please come forward as directed by the ushers. Grape juice and gluten free wafers are available; please indicate to the server by raising your hand. 5 COMMUNION SONG Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found. Was blind but now I see. Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear And Grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed. My chains are gone, I've been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood his mercy reigns; Unending love, amazing grace. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. My chains are gone, I've been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood his mercy reigns; Unending love, amazing grace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow. The sun forbear to shine. But God who called me hear below, Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone 6

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (please stand) We thank you, O God, that you have fed us at your table with bread and wine beyond compare, the very life of Christ for us. Send your Spirit with us now, that we may set the captive free, use your gifts to build one another up, and in everything reflect your glory revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. BLESSING God Almighty send you light and truth to keep you all the days of your life. The hand of God protect you; the holy angels accompany you; and the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING Isaiah 62:1-5 The people s return to Judah after the exile was marred by economic and political troubles. Nevertheless, the prophet declares, Jerusalem and Judah will be restored. God will rejoice over Jerusalem as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride; and the people are called to the celebration. 1 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. GOSPEL John 2:1-11 Turning water to wine at the wedding at Cana is described as the first of Jesus signs. Through many such epiphanies, Jesus reveals that he bears God s creative power and joyful presence into the world. 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 4 And Jesus said to her, Woman,
