Over the Pastor's Shoulder 19 Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. (Matthew 18:19-20) Drawing upon the prophet Isaiah, Jesus declares, My house shall be a house of prayer. Who doesn t want our church to be a house of prayer? I am afraid that prayer often takes a backseat to our busyness in the church. I say this with sorrow, for I believe it saddens the heart of God. True, we need to have our committee meetings, and our business meetings, and our Bible studies, and our fellowship groups, and our CHIC and camp fundraisers, and let s not forget VBS, Jul Fest, and the now yearly Rummage Sale, but if the fire is not hot at the center, these things are only ashes in our hands. Prayer is the necessary work of the church that keeps the fire hot. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the importance and power of prayer. Sometimes we simply need to be encouraged to pray. It is God s desire to bring individual and families into saving faith. It is God s desire to deliver people from racism, sexism, nationalism, and consumerism. It s God s desire to deliver people from addiction to drugs, sex, money, and power. It is God s desire to bring whole communities into Gospel fidelity. It is God s desire for the church to be salt and light in the world. It is God s desire for each one of us to make a positive difference in Oak Lawn and the surrounding communities. Prayer is a crucial means for the fulfillment of these yearnings in the heart of God. When we come together in prayer, there is no limit to what can be accomplished for the sake of God s kingdom. Never forget that all that God does is in answer to prayer. I invite you to join me for an evening of prayer on Wednesday, July 8, at 7 P.M. in the Fireside Room. Please don t ever underestimate the significance of our joining together in prayer. Prayer might just be the most important thing we ever do together in the church. See you on the 8 th. Grace and Peace, Pastor Jim Tuesday Morning Women s Bible Study These thoughts are usually addressed in my February column as I thank my Valentines by name for participation on Bible Study Tuesday mornings. This year time and study had another agenda which now prompts a fast forward by acknowledging this group for faithfulness, support and interest as we individually anticipate a summer of continued /active growth and blooming based on the personal design God has planned for us. What an awesome God to specially design thirty-two plans to strengthen our September return as our personal quiet times and walk with God will enable a sharing of renewed riches as we re-group for further study and growth. This July-August column gives opportunity and privilege to respond to a double pay-back blessing Thanking God for our years, months, weeks of knowing of Him and knowing Him personally and thanking my Valentines as they enter His House each Tuesday for strength and fellowship while journeying with others during times designed for His children. His guarantee His plan His purpose our mission with His tools. Bills will still come due and payrolls will still need to be made. The Treasurer noted that at our last executive board meeting, the checking account balance was $3148.46 this is precariously low, especially so going into the summer. Gifts above and beyond your regular offerings are always appreciated. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Worship Schedule Just a reminder that our morning worship and nursery for infants and toddlers begin at 10 A.M. Plan to join us immediately following worship in Peterson Hall for Coffee and...
