It is the 20th surah, and has 135 verses. It mostly talks about the purpose of Quran revelation, story of Musa (A), story of Adam (A), the day of judgement, rewards and punishments in hereafter, etc. Allah revealed Quran and sent His Messenger (S) as a mercy for us. The Quran is a reminder from Allah where we know about what we must do or avoid. If someone has knowledge in Quran, it means that Allah wants abundance of good for him. Allah alone has created everything in the universe. Only He has the complete knowledge of everything including our future. He has the best names and qualities. We must worship Him only. Prophet Musa (A) is one of the major Prophets in Islam. Other major prophets include Ibrahim (A), Nuh (A), Isa (A), and Muhammad (S). Just before Musa (A) got the revelation from Allah, he was travelling with his family. It was a cold dark night, and they were lost between some mountain passes that were covered with snow, cloud and darkness. Suddenly, Musa (A) saw a fire from the other side of the Page: 4
mountain. Musa (A) told his family to camp down there, and went out to bring a torch or find some guidance at the fire. When Musa (A) came to the fire, Allah talked with him and told him that Allah chose him as His messenger. Allah commanded Musa (A) to preach that: Humans must worship Allah alone. Perform and establish prayer. The qiyamah (judgement day) is inevitable and nobody can avoid it. Except Allah nobody knows when it will happen. Every person will be rewarded in hereafter according to his deeds in this world. Don t follow the disbelievers. Otherwise, your life will be destroyed. Allah also gave Musa (A) two miracles so that he could show them to the people he would give dawah. The miracles were: With Allah s wish, Musa (A) could turn his stick into a large, fast-moving snake. With Allah s wish, Musa s (A) hand could shine like a half-moon or a lamp. In addition, Allah also commanded Musa (A) to give dawah to Fir aun (Pharaoh), the king of Egypt. Because, Fir aun transgressed, oppressed, preferred the worldly life over hereafter and forgot about Allah. Fir aun was the mightiest king on Earth at that time. He was extremely arrogant and declared himself as god. He had the largest army and the most powerful kingdom. He was the most tyrannical ruler. So, Musa (A) prayed for Allah s support to preach to Fir aun. His prayers include: To bless him with self-confidence, boldness and contentment; To make his task easier, effective and efficient; To remove his stammering so the people would understand his message. The stammering was caused by an incident when he was a child. He was presented a date and a hot coal stone, and he placed the coal on his tongue instead of the date. Page: 5
Key Lessons We must worship Allah alone and follow His commands and the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (S). We also have to believe in all the prophets (A). Prophet Muhammad (S) is the final prophet. We should learn Quran as much as we can and manifest the learning in our life. The more Allah loves us, the more Quran and Islamic knowledge we will be able to learn. We have to give dawah to everyone including the common people and the leaders. We should always pray for Allah s help so that we get the best in both worlds - here and hereafter. We should not be shy about our limitation, rather, we should always make dua to Allah. Allah is closer to us than anyone, and He loves to hear and accept our duas. Page: 6
