Resources to Copy Enhanced CD items print all Conference Outline Item 1 Focal Wall Description Display the Galactic Starveyors Title Banner (pack item 1) with each banner add-on attached to the banner (pack item 2), and Bible Verse Poster (pack item 6). You may also add the teaching pictures to the focal wall for display, but be prepared to take them off the wall as needed during the teaching session. Display constellation stars on the focal wall for discussion in step 3. Add any of the pack items to the wall to create a collage feel and remove/add as you use them in Step 5 of the Teaching plan. 2

Room Setup Description Set up chairs, facing focal wall, in a circle so that there is a large space for conferees to participate in teaching activities and games. You might want to have a small table nearby for teaching materials and other supplies. Decoration Suggestions Create a clubhouse feel by using ideas from the Decorating Made Easy book. Add posters and other theme related objects to create a child s clubhouse. Create window cut-outs to add to your walls so that it looks like you can see outside at night. You might want to add objects to your space/room to make it look like it is a place children hang out telescopes, binoculars, large pillows, toys, backpacks, and so forth. Audio Visual Needs CD Player Teaching Steps 1. Welcome (5 minutes) Play Galactic Starveyors (CD) as conferees enter the room. Introduce yourself and welcome conferees to the Starveyors Clubhouse. Say, This is where kids will become observers of the galaxy and discover God s plan for the universe. They will be Searching the Visible, Discovering the Invisible. Review the decorations found in the room as well as mention the decorating tips found in the leader guide on pages 6-7. Remind attendees that decorations are to help create excitement and should aid in your teaching. Briefly mention how you created decorations and information for where you found materials or ideas used to prepare your space. Provide each participant with Handout 1 to make notes on throughout the conference. 2. Let s Get Acquainted (5 minutes) Say: God created each of us to have a relationship with Him. We are going to search the clubhouse and move to the star that I describe to you. Stars look to be different colors when they are in the sky. The color of the star comes from the temperature of the star s surface. We are going to move from the coolest to the hottest stars. Each of the statements on the stars will describe the characteristics of kids we will be teaching at VBS this year. Let s find the red star and read the statement together. Have everybody travel to the red star and read the statement. Call the remaining stars in this order (orange, yellow, white, light blue, dark blue) and leave time for everybody to read the statement together. 3. Say: Every good observer should have a plan and the right tools to discover the galaxy that God created and His plan for the universe. Point out the star constellation that you have made on the focal wall with star cutouts. Remind conferees that they should check with their VBS director for their specific schedule. The base Bible study is designed for a 30-minute teaching session each day. Briefly discuss what kids will be doing during each segment of the session. Get Started: 5 minutes to engage kids in the lesson for the day Learn It: 10-15 minutes teaching activity (Bible Story/Lesson and Activity) Live It: 5-10 minute application activity from the day s lesson Finish It: 5 minute activity to recall the day s lesson Additional Activity Options: 10-minute activities that leaders can use to extend 3

their daily observation or use to substitute an activity from the original plan. The best way to see the stars is to have tools designed to bring each of them into focus. Discuss and show each of the following resources: VBS 2017 Grades 1 2 Bible Study Leader Guide: Each leader in the class needs a leader guide. The guide includes all the teaching procedures, decorations suggestions, supply lists, tips, and suggestions for how to teach first and second graders. Point out that a supply list for each day is provided for quick and simple reference to materials needed for each day s lesson. Be sure to encourage leaders to not skip the leader devotion found at the beginning of each day s teaching lesson. VBS 2017 Grades 1 2 Bible Study Leader Pack: Each Bible study room should receive their own leader pack. The items included inside the pack are the title banner which is displayed on the wall, banner add-ons, and all the items needed to complete specific activities that are outlined in the Bible Study Leader Guide. Call attention to any pack items used on the focal wall. Explain that each pack items is numbered and instructions are located on each item, if it is used on more than one day, and how it needs to be prepared. VBS 2017 Grades 1 2 Bible Study Enhanced CD: The CD comes inside the leader pack. It has two purposes; one is to provide music and the other is curriculum items that will need to be printed. When the CD is placed inside a CD player it can used to provide music needed for each day s different activities, as outlined in the Bible Study Leader Guide, and for listening to Galactic Starveyors music as kids arrive and leave. o Bible Study Enhanced CD Notebook: When the CD is placed in a computer you will be able to access files with content for specific activities or supplemental activities as outlined in the Bible Study Leader Guide. You should print ALL of these files when you get your CD so that you have a copy of the material. If you lose this CD, you won t have access to the items that need to be printed. Point out the different items found on the CD; review questions, discussion questions, supplemental items used for activities. You may copy/print as many of the CD items as you need for your specific group. Instructions for using the Bible Study Enhanced CD are also found on the instruction sheet of the leader pack. Kids Starveyor Kit: Grades 1 6: The Kid s Starveyor Kit includes a Spinner and five daily cards with Bible content and activities to engage kids in Bible study and is a fun resource for kids to take home at the end of the week. The kit is designed for grades 1 6. VBS 2017 Devotional Bible for Kids: The Bible is the most important resource for our observation. We must be studying and going deeper in God s Word to discover that God planned for Jesus to be the Savior from the beginning of time. Take time to ask if there are any questions regarding the materials needed to teach each of the daily lessons. Remember, you might have conferees that have never taught VBS before and may not know about these resources. Direct conferees to ask their VBS Director about the resources that will be provided and remind them to also get a schedule. 4. Bible Skills (5 minutes) Ask four volunteers to come and play the prepared Bible skill game. Explain that the Bible is divided into Old and New Testaments. Ask volunteers to read the names of the books that are on the moon rocks. Mention that only two (Genesis and Isaiah) books are 4

from the Old Testament and that the others are found in the New Testament. Say: Four books are Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) and they tell the story of Jesus life on earth. Acts is the only book of History in the New Testament. The last moon rock is Colossians, which is one of Paul s letters and the book where our VBS Bible verse can be found. Explain that kids will be given a clue and that they must race to the moon rock that fits that clue. Point out that some of the clues might have more than one answer. (This is the Bible Skills Activity for Day 1.) Clues: the first book of the Bible, the book of History in the New Testament, a Gospel book, the book with the VBS verse 5. Bible Study Teaching (45 minutes) Remind leaders that the Bible story is always going to be located in the Learn It section of each daily plan. Each day observers will be Searching the Visible, Discovering the Invisible. The gospel is going to be shared with children each day. We need to be sensitive to children who want to make professions of faith throughout the week. As a help, the story is located on the back of each Bible Story Picture but it is very important that we make sure children know these stories come from the Bible and that they are true. Consider starting each story by opening your Bible and reading or having a child read one of the verses/segment from the story. Always have your Bible open when you are telling the story but for the sake of this training time use the story on the back of the picture. Demonstrate how each session s Bible story is presented: Day 1: The Relationship Began (Genesis 1:1-2,26-31) Today s Point: The God who created everything wants a relationship with us. First and Second graders will be listening to the story of how God created people to have a relationship with Himself. The teacher will be using a story wheel to represent each part of the story. Use prepared Story Wheels Sleeves as you read the first few sections of the story. Be sure to have your Bible open as you tell the story to reinforce that this story is from God s Word and can be trusted. Day 2: The Relationship Broken (Genesis 3) Today s Point: Sin messed everything up, but God is still in control. First and Second graders will be listening for specific words and names during the story. When they hear their word or name they should hold up their plate and then place it back down on the floor until they hear the word or name again. Have plates prepared with specific words/names printed on the plates. You can choose to toss the plates to pretend they are shooting stars or just pass them out. Read through the story (1-2 segments) and have conferees lift and lower their stars as they hear the words/names in the story. Day 3: The Restoration Promised (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-24; Luke 2:22-38) Today s Point: God sent His Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world. First and second graders will learn that the story of Jesus birth starts in the Old Testament and the rest is found in the New Testament. They will listen to the story and review important parts by tossing a comet through the air. 5

Tell the Bible story. Toss to a volunteer the prepared comet and ask the first review question. Instruct the volunteer to toss the comet to another volunteer to answer the next question. Remind volunteers to be gentle when tossing the comet and make sure the person they are tossing to is watching and ready to catch the comet. Day 4: The Relationship Restored (Mark 15:22-16:7) Today s Point: Jesus gave His life to be my Savior. First and second graders will discover that there are some things that only God could do. They will learn that even though Jesus could have saved Himself, He chose to follow God s plan and give His life to be our Savior. Read through the story of how Jesus death, burial, and resurrection created a way for people s relationship with God to be restored. Give conferees wadded up strips from Meteor Shower and allow conferees to toss the meteors around the room. At stop, everyone should pick up a meteor. Without using words, conferees will find others in the room that shares the same phrase. After groups have been formed, move from group to group (beginning with the God Rules ). Using Sharing the Gospel with Kids found on the inside front cover of the leader guide, read the sentence that corresponds with the phrase. Call attention to the ABCs of Becoming a Christian. ADMIT BELIEVE - CONFESS Take time to pray that the Lord will make it very clear to children if they are ready to make a decision to trust Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Day 5: The Relationship Continues (John 21:1-19; Acts 1:4,8) Today s Point: Even though I mess up, God still loves me and will never leave me. First and second graders will read the Bible story by placing the planets in order from smallest to largest. While they are reading, others will be listening for something about fishing in the story. Distribute planets to eight conferees and lead them to come to the front and line up in order from smallest to largest. (Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter) Lead conferees to read their portion of the Bible story and remind the rest of the group to listen carefully for something to do with fishing. After hearing the story, remind conferees the Holy Spirit is how God continues to help and guide His followers. 6. Memory Verse (15 minutes) First and second graders will be learning Colossians 1:15-16 throughout the week. Point to the verse poster (pack item 3) on the focal wall and lead conferees to say the verse together. Share that each day kids will be using different games/activities to learn the Bible verse. The Memory Verse activities are found at the end of the Learn It section each day. There are also daily Bible verses for kids to learn if your group is ready for more of a challenge. Ask a volunteer to read John 14:26 from the poster. Form a circle of conferees and say, You will pass the globe (or beach ball) over your heads to the next person as you say one word of the Bible verse. Continue the activity and try to 6

increase your speed as they get more familiar with the verse. This is the bonus verse activity for day 5. (You can also do this with the weekly verse if you prefer). 7. Sharing the Gospel (10 minutes) First and second graders will hear the Gospel message beginning on Day 1 but will focus on God s Plan for Me on Day 4. On Day 4, there may be questions from kids about how to become a Christian. Be ready to answer questions that children have about the ABCs of Becoming a Christian. There are many tools to help leaders share the Gospel with children: Sharing the Gospel with Kids Located in the front of your leader guide VBS 2017 Devotional Bible for Kids Bible designed with highlighted text and margin notes to take kids through the Gospel plan of salvation. Included is 30 days of devotions to help any child build the habit reading God s word. VBS 2017 Takin It Home CD a tool designed as an immediate follow-up for each day s Bible content. Simply pop it into the CD and families will be able to connect to the Bible content and each other. VBS 2017 ABC Wristband a great gift to remind children of how to respond to the gospel. VBS 2017 Kids Gospel Guide a guide that makes it easy for kids to share with family and friends the gospel and how to ask Jesus to be their Savior and Lord. The Gospel: God s Plan for Me A witnessing booklet that emphasizes the God s plan for salvation from the beginning of creation and how we can respond to that plan. VBS 2017 Parent Guides A guide that is designed with 5 family devotions, fun activities, and a gospel presentation. When children respond to the Gospel it is as simple as ABC. 8. Kids Starveyor Kits: Grades 1 6 are used in the Live It section each day and are suggested for several activities throughout the leader guide. Starveyor Kits contain the following items: 5 daily cards: Note that during the Finish It children are given different tasks/games to play using the cards in class. These cards also contain a short review of Bible content and the daily points. Galactic Spinner: The spinner is used in several activities outlined in the leader guide. The spinner has several different faces to use in specific games/activities but also includes a faceplate that kids can decorate before beginning to play any of the games. 9. Continuing the Connection (5 minutes) Share that the job of the Bible Study leader isn t over on the last day of VBS. Bible study leaders have been given a great opportunity to build relationships with children during the time they attend VBS. Leaders must be intentional to continue that relationship. Check with your VBS director and be a part of the follow-up process. End in prayer for VBS and specifically for the children who will be hearing the Gospel message. Give each attendee a bookmark to remind them to pray for VBS 2017. 7
