The Feast of the Archangels What are Angels? An angel is a pure spirit created by God. The Old Testament theology included the belief in angels: spiritual beings or intelligences of heavenly residence, employed by God as the ministers of his will. The word Angel means messenger in the bible. Angles are working for God and for the ultimate benefit of mankind. Angels are celestial or heavenly beings, on a higher order than human beings. They are distinct from saints, which men can become. How do we know angels exist? Our Lord often spoke of angels. Angels are purely spiritual or bodiless persons some of whom behold the face of God and thus are in bliss. Angels are the objects of God s grace and love. Their response to God s love did not require time and reflection to grow and mature. AS soon as they were created they received grace, they had the opportunity to respond to God s love and thus be welcomed into bliss. The church teaches that everyone has a guardian angel, based on references to them throughout the bible. Why did God Create Angels? Angels do not have man s shortcomings and can therefore act for God and represent Him when communicating with men and women. Angels were made immortal (never to die). The feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are usually celebrated on September 29 th. However, this year, because the 29 th falls on a Sunday, October 2 nd has been designated as the Holy memorial of the Archangels. September 29 th Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael Archangels St. Michael (means- who us like unto God? and is also known as the prince of the heavenly host. Michael was the archangel who fought against Satan and all his evil angels, defending all the friends of God. He is the protector of all humanity from the snares of the devil. We invoke St. Michael to help us in our fight against Satan, to rescue souls from Satan, especially at the hour of death. Patron: Against temptations, against powers of evil, artists, bakers bankers, battle. Saint Gabriel Gabriel means God is my strength Gabriel announced to Zachariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and Mary, the birth of Jesus. His greeting to the Virgin Mary, Hail Mary, full of grace, is one of the most familiar and frequent prayers of the Christian people. Patron: Ambassadors, broadcasting, child birth, clergy, postal workers In honor of St. Gabriel, Learn the Angelus and recite it daily. Traditionally the prayer is prayed at the 6:00 and 12:00 Hours (am and pm) Saint Raphael Raphael (Medicine of God) is the archangel who took care of Tobias on his journey. His mission as a wonderful healer and fellow traveler with the youthful Tobias has caused him to be invoked for journeys and at critical moments in life. Tradition also holds that Raphael is the angel that stirred the waters at the healing sheep pool in Bethesda. His name means God has healed. Patron: Blind, bodily ills, eye problems, guardian angles, healers, physicians, nurses, travelers, young people. Read the Book of Tobit for the story of St. Raphael helping Tobit and Tobias. The Difference between Angels and Archangels: You should be aware that the word "angel" denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels. We can call not only on our friends for intercessory prayer, but also on angels for intercession and help.
