In this answer key, we have often quoted from the text directly, in order to have an accurate standard of comparison for your answers in your own words. Therefore, your answers are acceptable whenever they are in general agreement with the text; we do not require or want an exact match with our answers provided herein. Some questions ask for a personal response. We suggest you review these with your pastor or other mature Christian that you know. Answers or words not from the reading text are set in brackets. Lesson 8 Covenant Nation Disciplined: Numbers 1. 1) to organize the people for entering into the conquest of the promised land, and 2) to show us how God trains or disciplines His people so that they will be ready to receive what He has promised. 2. Approximately 40 years, from Mt. Sinai to the Jordan plain. 3. because part of the organization was to count the people (Num 1; 26), to assign positions as preparation for conflict. 4. The camp of Israel was always in the form of a square, with the Tabernacle, the presence of God, in the center. Three tribes were on each side of the Tabernacle. For each of these three, one tribe was marked out by God as the leader. 5. At the time of the first Passover, God had declared that the firstborn of Israel were His, to be consecrated for His service. Now God chose the tribe of Levi to take the place of the first-born. Some served as priests, and the others both aided the priests and carried the Tabernacle when the camp moved. 6. God designed each test to teach them faith to trust God to meet their needs, no matter how bad the circumstances looked. 7. a. ). b. because this was the land God had chosen for them. God had defined this land for them over 600 years before. c. d. God had already told them that it was flowing with milk and honey (Exo 3:8)! 8. a. we b. We there are no exceptions to His Word, His character, His sovereign rule, His power, or His goodness. b. you trust in God because you learn of Him. You know Him in biblical truth. c. Personal answer 10. Why did God wait to appear during the rebellion? If He had appeared to the people earlier, they would have gone into the land obediently. But they would have gone up ever interested in your obedience because you fear the consequences. 11. [No.] Please be clear: obedience for any reason is better than disobedience, because it protects you disobedience. 12. brief glimpses of God are not enough to grow you or to sustain you in the life of faith. You must first come to God through seeking His truth. Today this is in Jesus Christ. 13. a. 1 Corinthians 10:13 [God provides for us in every trial. He will provide what we need for His b. Matthew 4:7 [When we ask God for help in trials, it should never be to get what we want, but what God wants in His timing.] c. James 1:2ff. [Trials are used by God for our good, to teach us lessons that help us grow to spiritual maturity.] 14. God was teaching that He is God! These ar mstances. 18. in order to judge their sin. He also allows difficulties when we are in His will so we might grow in faith by trusting more. 19. God has put His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross that we might look to Him and be saved. There is no other way. We must either do what God says, or if we do not believe Him, we will die in our sins. (Joh 3:14-15) Old Testament Survey, Course OT3: Student Answer Key as of 6/15/2016 1

20. Jehovah is not manipulated by men. He caused Balaam to bless Israel instead of cursing her. 21. without large flocks, these special offerings were not required. When you trust God in outward experience, you begin to walk in peace, no matter if the circumstances are tumultuous. b. God gives you two things: 1) His Word, and 2) opportunities to apply it. It is in the application to everyday life, in practical experience, that you grow in faith because it is then that you are actually trusting Him. 24. They try to avoid responsibility; they blame others for their problems. They say God expects too much, and that they are good enough because they are not as bad as some others. They say that the standard is up to each person to decide for themselves. 7. The Law is good in two ways. First, the Law is instructive. God reveals what He is like: 1) in His character, 2) in His absolute goodness, and 3) in His justice. Secondly, the Law is protective. 1) It removes from society those who threaten society. 2) It limits sin by creating a fear of punishment in those who do not know God. And 3) it protects men from selfishness. It provides for the poor and encourages doing good to others. 8. 1. The Majesty and Glory of God as revealed in Creation. 2. If they obey, they will be physically, tangibly, and outwardly blessed beyond their wildest dreams: in prosperity, protection, and health. If they do not obey, God will withdraw the blessing. 11. Knowing God ----> Love for Him ----> Obedience to His commands ----> God blessing us (spiritually) 12. a. Our love for God springs from the love we have already received from God (1Jo 4:19). This love is both the motive and result of obedience. As we love Him, we want to please Him in every way; as His children, we want to please our Father. b. And as we obey Him and receive His blessings, we grow to love Him more. 13. meaning of suddenly overcoming resistance. In the New Covenant, [the blessings are spiritual.] As we shine with His light and goodness through His spiritual blessings, we are witnesses for Him. b. The dynamics are the same: love produces obedience, in which God gives blessings. 17. then His blessing would be disconnected from His holiness, and there would be no testimony to His justice. 18. 1) as a warning that something was wrong, so they could repent, and 2) as a testimony to His justice and holiness. 19. 1) to awaken them to their sin, that they might repent and be restored to fellowship with Him, and 2) to grow their faith. 20. a. b. c.
