Friday morning WE COME TO GOD IN PRAYER Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. WE PRAY PSALM 86 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long. Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you. Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you. Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. When I am in distress I call to you, because you answer me. Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead. Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. GOD SPEAKS TO US (see daily Bible reading guide, or other Bible reading) Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. WE CONFESS OUR FAITH (Apostles Creed, scriptural song, or other hymn/song) WE PRAY FOR OURSELVES AND THE WORLD Jesus was tempted in every way, just as we are yet he did not sin. Let us pray to him. Holy Jesus: help us, we pray. We thank you, Lord, for overcoming the temptation of the evil one: keep us safe this day from the world, the devil, and the desires of our sinful nature. Holy Jesus: help us, we pray. You promise not to test us beyond our ability: strengthen those who struggle with temptation to resist evil and to do what is right. Holy Jesus: help us, we pray. You have sent us into the world to serve one another: save our places of work from corruption so that they serve the common good. Holy Jesus: help us, we pray. For your faithfulness which endures through all generations, we thank you: make us faithful to our neighbour, to our families, and to you. Holy Jesus: help us, we pray. (Other prayers may follow) Lord Jesus Christ, as you have given your life to redeem me, yourself for my example, your word for my rule, your grace for my guide, your body on the cross for my sin: Enter in and take possession of my heart, and live with me forever. WE PRAY THE LORD S PRAYER WE GLORIFY GOD To him who is able to keep us from stumbling and to present us before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! 37 MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER

Friday evening 39 WE COME TO GOD IN PRAYER Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. WE PRAY PSALM 51 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner! Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner! Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner! GOD SPEAKS TO US (see daily Bible reading guide, or other Bible reading) Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. WE CONFESS OUR FAITH (Apostles Creed, scriptural song, or other hymn/song) WE PRAY FOR OURSELVES AND THE WORLD Through Jesus we can approach God s throne with confidence. Let us pray for grace and mercy. God of grace: have mercy on us. Thank you, gracious God, for speech and conversation: forgive us for gossipping and complaining about our neighbour. God of grace: have mercy on us. Your Son has called peacemakers blessed: enable congregations everywhere to overcome conflict, bear each other s burdens, and live in harmony. God of grace: have mercy on us. For good company and a supportive community, we give you thanks: bless our neighbours, our friends, and those we work with. God of grace: have mercy on us. Thank you for bringing us to the close of this day: refresh our bodies, minds, and spirits so that we can awake rested to serve you tomorrow. God of grace: have mercy on us. (Other prayers may follow) Lord God, from whom all holy desires, all good purposes, and all right works proceed: Give to your servants that peace which the world cannot give. Defend us from the fear of our enemies, and set our hearts to obey your commandments, so that we may live on earth in rest and quietness. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WE PRAY THE LORD S PRAYER GOD BLESSES US Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. May the Lord bless us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to eternal life. MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER

Saturday morning WE COME TO GOD IN PRAYER May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us, so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. WE PRAY PSALM 95 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our maker. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our maker. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God: and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our maker. GOD SPEAKS TO US (see daily Bible reading guide, or other Bible reading) Make your face shine on your servant, and teach me your decrees. WE CONFESS OUR FAITH (Apostles Creed, scriptural song, or other hymn/song) WE PRAY FOR OURSELVES AND THE WORLD Let us put on the full armour of God and pray to him in the power of the Holy Spirit. Almighty God: receive our prayer. We praise you, almighty God, that you have rescued us from every kind of evil: preserve us today and in our last day. Almighty God: receive our prayer. You have sent your church into all the world: bless the church s mission so that people everywhere may repent and believe. Almighty God: receive our prayer. For bringing beauty to our lives through your creation, we thank you: enrich all art and culture so that we may love what is good, beautiful, and true. Almighty God: receive our prayer. Your Son prayed and fasted in the desert: grant us control over our desires so that we are open to our neighbour s needs. Almighty God: receive our prayer. (Other prayers may follow) I thank you, heavenly Father, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, that you have protected me through the night from all harm and danger. I ask you to keep me this day, too, from all sin and evil, so that in all my thoughts, words, and deeds I may please you. In your hands I place my body and soul and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the evil one may have no power over me. WE PRAY THE LORD S PRAYER GOD BLESSES US God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all. 41 MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER

Saturday evening WE COME TO GOD IN PRAYER One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. WE PRAY PSALM 16 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing. Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. Jesus, you are the resurrection and the life. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Jesus, you are the resurrection and the life. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. Jesus, you are the resurrection and the life. GOD SPEAKS TO US (see daily Bible reading guide, or other Bible reading) Make your face shine on your servant, and teach me your decrees. WE CONFESS OUR FAITH (Apostles Creed, scriptural song, or other hymn/song) WE PRAY FOR OURSELVES AND THE WORLD Jesus says: I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. Let us pray. Good Shepherd: hear our prayer. You have taught us to receive God s gifts thankfully and to share our goods with others: pardon our ingratitude and lack of generosity. Good Shepherd: hear our prayer. Thank you for your guidance and correction: bring back to yourself those who have wandered from the church and from you. Good Shepherd: hear our prayer. Thank you for not abandoning us in the valley of the shadow of death: reassure those who are dying of your love, and receive them into your eternal arms. Good Shepherd: hear our prayer. After resting in the tomb you rose to life: keep us safe now and at our last hour, so that we may wake from death and live with you. Good Shepherd: hear our prayer. (Other prayers may follow) Lord Jesus Christ, as you have said that you are the way, the truth, and the life: Let us never stray from you, doubt your promises, nor rely on anything else than you; for without you there is nothing to be desired, in heaven or on earth; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WE PRAY THE LORD S PRAYER GOD BLESSES US Jesus says: Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps my words. May the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with us always. 43 MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER

SCRIPTURAL SONGS Canticles for morning and evening and doxologies 55

Canticles for the morning THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has come to his people and set them free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, to show mercy to our forebears, and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. THE TE DEUM We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as Lord; all creation worships you, the Father everlasting. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all praise, the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free you humbly chose the Virgin s womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. 57 SCRIPTURAL SONGS

THE BEATITUDES Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Canticles for the evening THE SONG OF SIMEON Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace: your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. THE SONG OF MARY My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, who has looked with favour on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him, from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm and scattered the proud in their conceit, casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, to remember the promise of mercy, the promise made to our forebears, to Abraham and his children forever. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. 59 SCRIPTURAL SONGS

SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD Saviour of the world, by your cross and blood you have set us free; Lord, save us and help us. You saved your disciples when they were about to die; hear us and save us. In your great pity and mercy, free us from our sins. Show yourself as our Saviour and mighty deliverer; save us, so that we can praise you. As you have promised, draw near to us from your throne of glory; look down and hear us as we cry for help. Come and live with us, Lord Jesus Christ; stay with us forever. And when you appear in power and great glory, make us one with you in your kingdom. Praise to you, our Lord, king of eternal glory. Doxologies Blessing and honour and thanksgiving and praise more than we can utter, more than we can conceive, be to you, O holy and glorious Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, by all angels, all people, all creatures, forever and ever. Glory be to God the Father, glory be to God the Son, glory be to God the Spirit: everlasting three in one. Let all heaven and earth adore you, our God, forevermore. Now to him who loved us, gave us every pledge that love could give, freely shed his blood to save us, gave his life that we might live, be the kingdom and dominion and the glory evermore. Now to the King of heaven your cheerful voices raise; to him be glory given, power, majesty, praise; from shore to shore his name be sung by every tongue for evermore. Oh, bless the Lord, my soul! Let all in me combine to aid my tongue to bless his name whose favour is divine. 61 SCRIPTURAL SONGS

63 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures, here below, praise God above, you heavenly host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Alleluia, alleluia! praise the everlasting King! OTHER PRAYERS Prayers at mealtime Prayers at bedtime Repentance and confession of sin Prayers for God s presence and blessing To God, the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see to him be honour and might forever. To God, the Father, Son, and Spirit, three in one, all praise be given: Bless him in every song, to him our hearts belong; let all his praise prolong on earth, in heaven. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, forever and ever. Worship, honour, glory, blessing, Lord, we offer to your name; young and old, their praise expressing, join your goodness to proclaim. As the saints in heaven adore you, we would bow before your throne; as your angels serve before you, so on earth your will be done.

Prayers at mealtime All creatures depend on you, O Lord, to give them food when they need it. You give it to them and they are satisfied. Be present at our table, Lord, be here and everywhere adored; bless these your gifts, and grant that we may feast with you eternally. Bless this food, O Lord, and let it nourish our body; give us also grace to strengthen our spirit, and love to enrich our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let this food to us be blest. God is great and God is good, now we thank him for our food. By his hand we all are fed; give us, Lord, our daily bread. Lord God, heavenly Father, bless us and these gifts which flow from your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord, help me share with others that which I receive, and gladly give with happy heart to help in every need. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever. Prayers at bedtime Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, and fit us for heaven, to live with you there. Be with us, merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world may rest on your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Eternal God, the hours of both the day and night are yours, and to you the darkness is no threat. Stay by my bedside and give me, I pray, a restful and untroubled sleep. Grant that I may wake in the morning refreshed and happy, ready to praise you and to serve my neighbour; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Guide us while we are awake, Lord, and guard us while we are asleep, so that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest with him in peace. Hear our prayer, O heavenly Father, as we lay us down to sleep: May your angels, pure and holy, round our bed their vigil keep. Pardon all our past transgressions, give us strength for days to come; guide and guard us with your blessing till your angels bear us home. 65 OTHER PRAYERS

Jesus, tender shepherd, hear me, bless your little lamb tonight; through the darkness, Lord, be near me, keep me safe till morning light. Through this day your hand has led me, and I thank you for your care; you have warmed me, clothed and fed me; listen to my evening prayer. Let my sins be all forgiven; bless the friends I love so well; take me, when I die, to heaven, happy there with you to dwell. Lighten our darkness, Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Lord, be with those who live in this house; drive away the devil and remove every trap he sets; let your holy angels stay in this place to keep it in peace; and let your blessing be always in it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray you, Lord, my soul to keep. Watch over me through all the night, and keep me safe till morning s light. O Lord, support us all the day long of this troubled life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous ones. We ask this all, for your love s sake. 67 OTHER PRAYERS

Repentance and confession of sin Almighty and eternal God, since you hate nothing that you have made, but forgive the sins of all who repent: Create in us new and contrite hearts, that we, who lament our sins and acknowledge our wretchedness, may obtain from you perfect forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor helpless sinner, confess to you all my sins, and repent of all the evil I have done. I have deeply displeased you and deserve your punishment in time and in eternity. But I am sorry for my sins, and I ask you, for the sake of the holy innocent sufferings and death of your dear Son Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me. Lord God, our heavenly Father, I confess that I have sinned against you, not only in my words and actions, but also in my secret thoughts and desires which I cannot fully know or understand, but which you know completely. I am sorry that I have displeased you, and repent of the evil I have done. For the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, have mercy on me, forgive my sins, and graciously help me in my weakness. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner! Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner! Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner! Most merciful God, you have given your only Son to die for us: Have mercy on us, and for his sake grant us forgiveness of all our sins. By your Holy Spirit increase our knowledge of you and your will, and make us obedient to your word, so that by your grace we may come to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. O Lord, free your people from their offences, that through your bountiful goodness we may all be released from the net of our sins which because of our frailty has entangled us; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. God, our Father, we confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. We confess to you, almighty God, before the whole company of heaven, and to each other, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, by our own fault. Have mercy on us, for Jesus sake, forgive us all our sins, and bring us to eternal life. 69 OTHER PRAYERS

Prayers for God s presence and blessing Be present with us, O Lord, in our daily duties, and grant to those who live in this house the strength and protection of your continual help, so that you may be known as the master of the family and the defender of this home; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Eternal God, as you have made all things for our service and have made us for your glory: Make holy our souls and bodies, our thoughts and intentions, our words and actions, so that whatever we think or speak or do may be done for the glory of your name. Let no pride or self-seeking, no covetousness or revenge, no mean ambitions or low imaginations desecrate what you have made holy; but let our body be the servant of our spirit, and both body and spirit be servants of Jesus; so that, doing all things for your glory now, we may enjoy your glory forever; through Jesus Christ our Lord. God of mercy, God of grace, show the brightness of your face; shine upon us, Saviour, shine, fill your church with light divine; and your saving health extend to the earth s remotest end. Gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to recognise you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to see you, a heart to meditate on you, and a life to proclaim you; through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord. Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: So rule and guide us by your Holy Spirit that in all the concerns and occupations of our daily life we may never forget you, but remember that we are always walking in your sight; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Help us, Lord God, to cling to you without parting, worship you without wearying, serve you without failing, faithfully seek you, happily find you, and forever possess you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead: his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need; the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guide. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. Christ be with me. Christ be with me. I bind myself unto the name, the strong name of the Trinity; by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three; by him all nature has creation; eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation; salvation is through Christ the Lord. 71 OTHER PRAYERS

I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast. I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad. Lord God, give us grace to be at rest from all sinful deeds and thoughts, to surrender ourselves completely to you, and to be calm before you like a still lake; so that the beams of your grace may be reflected there, and may kindle in our hearts the glow of faith, and love, and prayer. May we, in such stillness and hope, find strength and gladness in you, now and forevermore. Lord Jesus Christ, acknowledge what is yours in us, and take away from us all that is not yours; for your honour and glory. Lord Jesus Christ, give us grace to be meek and patient as you were, so that we may gently bear with the faults of others, and strive always to root out our own; for your sake. Lord Jesus, give yourself to me, and I shall be content, for nothing else than you can really comfort me. I cannot exist without you. Without your presence I have no strength to live. So I must come to you often and receive you for my healing and salvation. Otherwise I shall grow faint on my journey if I miss my heavenly food; as you once said, most merciful Jesus, when you were preaching to the people and healing all kinds of diseases: I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way. Feed me now as you fed those people then, since you give yourself to comfort those who trust you. You are the sweet refreshment of the soul, and those who take you as they should will inherit a share in your eternal glory. Lord Jesus, our good shepherd: Remember those who pass through the valley of the shadow of death. Be with them in their loneliness, and comfort them in their sorrow. Heal their hurt and restore their happiness. Guide them on your way, refresh them with your goodness, and bring them at last into your eternal home, where they will feast at your table and live with you forever. Lord, as you awaken us to delight in your praise, grant that we may know you, call on you, and praise you; for you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. 73 OTHER PRAYERS

Lord, be in me to strengthen me, outside me to preserve me, over me to shelter me, beneath me to support me, before me to divert me, behind me to bring me back, and around me to protect me. Lord, fill our minds with those things that are good and worthy of praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; for your mercy and truth s sake. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Lord, your way is perfect. Help us always to trust in your goodness, so that, walking with you and following you in all simplicity, we may possess quiet and contented minds, and may cast all our care on you, for you care for us. Grant this, Lord, for your dear Son s sake, Jesus Christ. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Merciful Jesus, when you undertook to set us free, you did not spurn the Virgin s womb. Live forever in our hearts. Inspire us with your purity. Strengthen us with your power. Make us perfect in your ways. Guide us into your truth. Unite us to yourself and to your church by your holy mysteries, so that we may conquer every evil power, and be wholly devoted to your service and conformed to your will; to the glory of God the Father. O Lord Jesus Christ, as you took children into your arms and blessed them, keep our children forever enfolded by your love. Help them to grow into love for you; save them from evil; strengthen them against the impulses of self-will; inspire in them a love for truth and the desire to serve others; and give them grace to follow day by day in the steps of your most holy life; for your name s sake. O Lord, open our eyes so that we may see clearly all the wonderful things you have done for us. Let us not live as if we were strangers to your commandments. Fill our hearts with such awe and love for you that nothing may persuade us to disobey you. Grant this, heavenly Father, for the sake of Christ Jesus our Saviour. O Saviour of the world, as you have redeemed us by your suffering and death on the cross, save us and help us, we pray, O Lord. 75 OTHER PRAYERS

77 Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, refresh me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Suffering of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me, and never let me be separated from you. From the wicked enemy defend me. In the hour of death, call me to you, so that with all your saints I may praise you forever and ever. We commend to you, O Lord, our souls and our bodies, our minds and our thoughts, our prayers and our hopes, our health and our work, our life and our death; our relatives and our friends, our neighbours, our fellow citizens, and all Christians, this day and always. Thank you, Father in heaven, through your Son, Jesus Christ, for protecting me all night from harm and danger. Protect me today from all sin and evil, so that everything I do will please you. I put myself and all I have into your hands. Send your holy angel to be with me, so that the devil will have no power over me. Thank you, Father in heaven, through your Son, Jesus Christ, for being good to me and protecting me today. Forgive me all the wrong things I have done. Protect me tonight. I put myself and all I have into your hands. Send your holy angel to be with me, so that the devil will have no power over me. Revised Common Lectionary plus readings through the Bible in three years Below are listed Bible reading references for each Sunday, plus a reading for each day of the week following. The Sunday and major church festival readings are from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), used in worship services. You could select one or more of these to read in your own prayer time, eg the gospel. The Monday to Friday readings follow a continuous plan, taking you through substantial sections of books of the Bible. The Saturday reading is the RCL psalm (or one of them) assigned for the next day. For more about the readings and the church year, see the Introduction. Note: For Sundays after Pentecost, only the first of the RCL Old Testament readings (the semi-continuous ones) are given here.
