Name: January 18, 2006 Global Studies/ELA Document Based Question Part III DOCUMENT BASED QUESTION This question is based on the accompanying documents. It is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Some of the documents have been edited for the purposes of the question. As you analyze the documents, take into account the source of each document and any point of view that may be presented in the document. Guidelines: Historical Context: The Middle Ages in Europe, a period of time from approximately 500 AD to 1400 AD, began with the destruction of the Roman Empire and the disorder that followed, which led to the rise of feudalism. During this period, also known as the Dark Ages, the Roman Catholic Church provided spiritual direction and also served many non-religious functions. Many literary, artistic, and architectural advances occurred. Task: Use the information from the documents and your knowledge of global history, answer the questions that follow each document in Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you write the Part B essay in which you will be asked to: Discuss the impact of Feudalism on Medieval life. The importance of the Roman Catholic Church. Identify some of the cultural achievements of the Middle Ages. In your essay, be sure to: Develop all aspects of the task Incorporate information from at least five documents Incorporate relevant outside information Support the theme with relevant facts, examples, and details (FREDs!) Use a logical and clear plan of organization, including an introduction and a conclusion that are beyond a restatement of the theme

Part A Short-Answer Questions Directions: Analyze the documents and answer the short-answer questions that follow each document the space provided. Document 7 Medieval culture was imperfect, was restricted to a narrow circle of superior minds Measure it, however, by the memories and the achievements that it had bequeathed to the modern world, and it will be found not unworthy to rank with those of earlier and later Golden Ages.
