NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST August 6, 2017 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS L O Lord, open my lips. C And my mouth will declare Your praise. L Make haste, O God, to deliver me; C make haste to help me, O Lord. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Praise to You, O Christ. Alleluia. ANTIPHON (Common) L Blessed be God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. C O come, let us worship Him. VENITE (page 220) C O come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise unto Him with songs of praise. For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods. The deep places of the earth are in His hand; the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hand formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 3

ANTIPHON (Common) L Blessed be God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. C O come, let us worship Him. PSALM Psalm 136:1 9 (antiphon: v. 26) Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever; the sun to rule over the day, for his steadfast love endures for-ever; the moon and stars to rule over the night, for his steadfast love endures forever; Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever. OFFICE HYMN O Living Bread from Heaven LSB 642 FIRST READING Isaiah 55: 1-5 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 4

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Romans 9: 1-13 I am speaking the truth in Christ I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but Through Isaac shall your offspring be named. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what the promise said: About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a son. And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad in order that God s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 5

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14: 13-22 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. But Jesus said, They need not go away; you give them something to eat. They said to him, We have only five loaves here and two fish. And he said, Bring them here to me. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. L This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. RESPONSORY (page 221) L Forever, O lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. L Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. MESSAGE by Randy Ervin TE DEUM (page 222) C We praise You, O God; we acknowledge You to be the Lord. All the earth now worships You, the Father everlasting. To You all angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the pow rs therein. To You cherubim and seraphim continually do cry: 6

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Your glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise You. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise You. The noble army of martyrs praise You. The holy Church throughout all the world does acknowledge You. The Father of an infinite majesty; Your adorable, true, and only Son; also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. You are the king of glory, O Christ; You are the everlasting Son of the Father. When You took upon Yourself to deliver man, You humbled Yourself to be born of a virgin. When You had overcome the sharpness of death, You opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You sit at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that You will come to be our judge. We therefore pray You to help Your servants, whom You have redeemed with Your precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Your saints in glory everlasting. OFFERING KYRIE (page 227) LORD S PRAYER (page 227) COLLECTS (page 227) COLLECT OF THE DAY L Heavenly Father, though we do not deserve Your goodness, still You provide for all our needs of body and soul. Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience C through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. COLLECT FOR GRACE L O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. BENEDICAMUS L Let us bless the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Announcements BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES So often we slip into the habit of living for the approval of others, which leads to frustration, disappointment and disillusionment in life and relationships. In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us not to do things for the approval of men. He then goes on to assure us that our Father who sees and knows us inside out is the One who can and will meet all our needs, including our need to be recognized, valued and loved. Whew! What a relief! Life begins to look different (and much better) when seen through the eyes of faith in our loving, gracious, living and forgiving God. Fix your eyes on Jesus - not your boss, co-worker, spouse, child or neighbor - and live in the light of His great love this week!
