The Sign of the Cross and Greeting Penitential Act All: Priest: Kyrie I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Responsorial Psalm Magnificat Leo Nestor Ma My soul proclaims the greatness of the LORD; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 May you entirely, spirit, soul and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. - gni - fi - cat! Gospel John 1:6-8, 19-28 There is one among you whom you do not recognize. Homily Profession of Faith (Nicene Creed) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. -5-

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Faithful Liturgy of the Eucharist Preparation of the Altar and the Gifts -6-

Communion Motet Gabriel to Mary Came 14th Cen Irish Carol 5:00 PM Saturday Archdiocesan Girl s Choir arr. David Willcocks Gabriel to Mary came, and entered at her dwelling, With his salutation glad her maiden fears dispelling, All hail, thou queen of virgins bright! God, Lord of earth and heaven s height, Thy very Son, shall soon be born in pureness, the Saviour of mankind. Thou art the gate of heaven bright, the sinners healer kind. How could I a mother be that am to man a stranger? How should I my strong resolve, my solemn vows endanger? Power from the Holy Ghost on high shall bring to pass this mystery. Then have no fear: Be of good cheer, believing that still thy chastity In God s almighty keeping shall all unsullied be. Then to him the maid replied, with noble mien supernal; Lo! The humble handmaid I of God the Lord eternal! With thee, bright messenger of heaven, by whom this wondrous news is given, I well agree and long to see fulfilled thy gracious prophecy. As God my Lord doth will it, so be it unto me! Hail! Thou Mother of the Lord, who bring st of gifts the rarest, Peace to angels and to men, when Christ the Lord thou barest! Do thou, we pray, entreat thy Son for us our long d redemption Himself to win, And from our sin release us; His succour for to give, That, when we hence are taken, we too in heaven may live. The Spirit of the Lord 11:00 AM Sunday Cathedral Basilica Choir Philip Stopford Commissioned for the Installation of Archbishop Charles Chaput, September 8, 2011 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor: He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliv rance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord; To give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that -10-

Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul Archdiocese of Philadelphia Welcome to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The cathedral church is the principal church of a diocese, because it is here that the bishop as the local ordinary of the diocese has a throne (chair), called the cathedra. On the twenty-seventh of September 1976, Pope Paul VI raised our Cathedral to the dignity and honor of a Basilica. The Holy Father on certain occasions expresses his grateful appreciation in this way to the faithful for outstanding Catholic action rendered to the Church and the people of God. This great honor was bestowed on the Archdiocese of Philadelphia after it hosted the 41st International Eucharistic Congress. Francis Patrick Kenrick, then Bishop of Philadelphia initiated the building of the Basilica in 1846. It was continued through the tenure of Saint John Neumann and completed in 1864, by Bishop (later Archbishop) Wood. The facade of the Basilica is graced by four massive stone columns. The four statues in the niches are: the Sacred Heart, to whom the Archdiocese was consecrated on October 15, 1873; Mary, the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed patroness of the United States in 1854, and Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the Basilica. The interior of the Basilica is of Roman-Corinthian style and cross-shaped in form. When the walls were first raised during the know-nothing era there were no original side windows because of the danger of destruction. Natural light, therefore, is admitted through the windows close to the ceiling. The underside of the baldachino, over the main Altar, is marble mosaic with its central figure a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The interior of the dome reveals a striking painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The Sanctuary stained glass windows contribute both beauty and light. The center window, devoted to the Eucharist, depicts the sacrifice of Melchizedeck, the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, and the Last Supper. The window to the left portrays three events in the life of Saint Peter; his call by Christ, his selection as Prince of the apostles, and his crucifixion. The window to the right reveals three scenes from the life of Saint Paul; his conversion; his preaching to the Athenians and his death by beheading. The Basilica seats approximately 1,000 (1,500 with added temporary seats). The floor is marble tile set in a cross design. The Cathedral Organ, originally built by Austin Organ Company in 1920, has been rebuilt and restored in 1957 and 1976. In 1987 further additions were made, including the Trumpet en chamade, at the top of the organ case. It total number of pipes is 4648, making it one of the largest in Philadelphia. Under the main Altar is a spacious crypt containing the remains of most of our Bishops and Archbishops, and of several prominent clergy of Philadelphia. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament is on the north side of the Basilica. It seats about 500 and was dedicated on the Feast of the Maternity of Our Lady, October 11, 1955.
