(page 1) Peter and Jesus WHAT S THE POINT? There is nothing that compares to the great love God has for the people He created. The culmination of that love was the moment that Jesus became the substitute to atone for our sin through His death on the cross. That s what Easter is all about. It is a celebration of God s love demonstrated through Jesus Christ. Easter also recognizes Jesus power over sin and death as demonstrated in Jesus resurrection from the dead. BIBLE CONNECTION John 13:36-38 (pages 1170-1171); John 18:1-11; 18:15-18; 18:25-27 (page 1176); John 20:1-23 (pages 1179-1180); John 21:15-19 (pages 1181-1182) CHARACTER WORD Love A great affection of the mind and heart TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can know that Jesus loves me enough that He died for me. Make sure your energy level reflects the joy felt by those first followers as they saw their Lord and Savior raised from the dead. Lead your clubbers to glorify God as they come to understand the reason Jesus gave His life. God loved you enough to send His Son to die for you. That fact demands a response, that is love for God and love for others. Love is the appropriate response to God s free gift of salvation. How will you show your love for God today? How will you show your love for others today? How will you love your Beach Club kids in the name of Jesus today? GET CONNECTED Worship Tip 10-15 10-15 Minutes Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson Plastic eggs Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your surf team and to introduce today s lesson. Give each kid an empty plastic egg. Explain that the eggs are empty to remind them why we celebrate Easter. Jesus didn t stay in the tomb. It is empty! He rose from the dead. Does your family celebrate Easter? If so, how? Who can share about a time you really felt loved, such as by a parent, teacher or friend? How do you know God loves you? How do you show love to others? What would you tell someone who asked how to know God loves them? Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible Connection and Memory Link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. Easter is the time we remember and celebrate how much Jesus loves people. Make sure this week s songs focus on Jesus. Choose songs that reflect on the price Jesus paid for sin and songs that celebrate the fact that Jesus is alive. Kids learn from the songs we sing. Leave them with a song in their heart that points them to Jesus great love for them.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them to memorize the verse No supplies needed Focus on the Bible Ask the kids who have their KBC Bible to stand up. Instruct those with Bibles to sit by and share with a clubber who does not have a Bible today. Remind them the importance of bringing their Bibles to club every week. Today s Bible verse is in the New Testament. Guide the kids to find Romans 5:8 (KBC Study Bible page 1235). Ask the kids to read the verse aloud together from the Bible. Focus on Today s Memory Link Today s character word is love. Today s memory link verse tells about the greatest act of love EVER shown by anyone - God. Guide the kids to follow along as you read Digging In on page 1235 to learn about God s incredible act of love. God loves you and me, no matter what. He gave His only Son to die for us because He loves us so much. He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to show us and teach us how to love each other. And He wants us to show love to others, just like He loves us. Form four groups. Assign each group one section of today s verse. Have each group stand up as they say their part of the verse. Recite the verse several times, switching parts. Option 1 DEMONSTRATING LOVE No supplies needed 10-15 Guide kids to stand in a circle and say one word of the verse until the verse and reference are recited. The last child, who will have recited the reference, will demonstrate or act out a way to show love to someone. The student who guesses the action correctly will say the first word of the memory link to start the group reciting the verse around the circle again. Continue the pattern of reciting around the circle and demonstrating as time permits. (page 2) Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1235) Do not assume the kids in your club celebrate Easter at home. KBC kids come from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds. Talk with them about what holidays they celebrate with their families. Always be respectful of the cultures kids represent. Never make a child feel guilty or ashamed if their family does not worship Jesus or celebrate Easter. Show love to kids by teaching the truth of God s word and praying their families will understand and accept the truth of the gospel. Option 2 - EASTER EGG TOSS Plastic eggs Guide the kids to sit in a circle. Give one student a plastic egg. As each word of the verse is recited, guide the kids to toss the egg across the circle to another child. Add an egg each time the kids start the verse again. Try to see how many eggs the group can keep in motion while reciting the verse.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through a gospel-centered Bible story No supplies needed 10-15 Introduce the Story In a TV show, each episode tells one short part of a longer story. Today, I m going to tell the Bible story in a series of episodes. The main people in the story are Jesus and Peter. Jesus is the Son of God. Peter is a disciple of Jesus. He was one of Jesus three best friends. John 13: 36-38 - Episode 1 Guide the kids to find John 13:36-38 (page 1170-1171). Jesus knew the time had come for Him to be crucified. The disciples didn t understand what Jesus was saying. Jesus told the disciples He was going away. Peter loved Jesus and promised that he would do anything for Jesus, even die for Him. Jesus told Peter he was wrong and would deny Jesus three times that night before the rooster crowed. Talk About It How do you think Peter felt when Jesus said he would deny Him? Peter loved Jesus. He would never turn his back on Jesus. Or would he? (page 3) As you talk about each episode in today s story, guide the kids to turn to that portion of the story in their Bibles and follow along as you explain what happened. Walk to a different part of the room as you talk about each episode so kids can visually understand that each event is separate, but linked together as one story. John 18:1-11 - Episode 2 Guide the kids to find John 18:1-11 (page 1176). Jesus took His disciples with Him to a garden to pray. It was late and the disciples kept falling asleep instead of praying. While they were in the garden, Judas arrived along with a group of Jewish leaders and soldiers. They had come to arrest Jesus. When the soldiers took Jesus, Peter wanted to fight. Read John 18:10-11. Talk About It Peter loved Jesus and was ready to fight to protect Him. But that wasn t Jesus way. Jesus knew He must obey God by sacrificing His life. Jesus was taken away and Peter followed at a distance. John 18:15-18, 25-27 - Episode 3 Guide the kids to find John 18:15-18 (page 1176). Peter followed Jesus and stood near a fire in the courtyard. A servant girl saw Peter and recognized him. She said, Hey, aren t you one of Jesus disciples? Peter lied, No, I m not. Guide the kids to read John 18:25-27 (page 1176). As Peter stayed by the fire, someone else asked, You re one of Jesus disciples, aren t you? Again, Peter lied and denied knowing Jesus. A third time, someone asked, Didn t I see you in the garden with Jesus? A third time Peter lied. I ve never seen that man. At that moment, the rooster crowed. Talk About It Peter loved Jesus but lied about knowing Him. Why do you think He lied and denied knowing Jesus? Another gospel account says that after the rooster crowed, Peter went out and wept bitterly. He felt terrible about failing to stand up for Jesus. Jesus was beaten and sentenced to be crucified. A crown of thorns was placed on His head. The soldiers nailed His hands and feet to a cross. The cross was lifted up so everyone could see Him and make fun of Him. After several hours

hanging on the cross, He took His last breath and died. They laid His body in a tomb and sealed it with a stone. John 20:1-23 - Episode 4 Guide the kids to find John 20:1-23 (page 1179-1180). It was early in the morning of the third day after Jesus had died. A group of women went to the tomb, but the stone in front of the tomb was rolled away. They told Peter and John what happened. Immediately, Peter and John ran to the tomb to see for themselves. Jesus body was gone! They were confused and went back to their homes. Where could Jesus body be? Then, Mary told them she had seen Jesus. He was alive! Later that evening, Jesus appeared in the room with the disciples. They were so happy to see Jesus was alive. John 21:15-19 - Episode 5 Guide the kids to find John 21:15-19 (page 1181-1182). Do you remember how many times Peter denied Jesus? (3 times) This time, Jesus had a conversation with Peter and asked Peter the same question 3 times: Do you love me? Each time, Peter confirmed His love for Jesus. Jesus forgave Peter for denying Him. Jesus loved Peter. He told Peter that he would keep his original promise and would give his life following Jesus. Jesus told Peter, Follow Me. (page 4) Avoid being too specific regarding the details of Jesus crucifixion. Keep your focus on the story of Peter s perspective on the crucifixion and resurrection as the text for today. We want the clubbers to come to an understanding that Jesus freely gave His life for them when He died, and that today He is alive! Memory Link Review Who do you think loved the other more, Jesus or Peter? (Jesus) Ask the kids to recite today s memory link, Romans 5:8. Jesus demonstrated His love for Peter by giving His life to pay for Peter s sin. Jesus loves you just as much as He loved Peter. He gave His life to pay for your sin, too. Gospel Connection Jesus loves you just like He loved Peter. Just like Peter, you can choose to follow Jesus and receive forgiveness from sin. You can ADMIT you were born a sinner and ASK Him to forgive your sin. You can BELIEVE that Jesus died and rose again just like today s story explained. Then, like Peter, you can CHOOSE to follow Jesus, making Him your Savior and Lord. Invite children wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated area to meet with a leader one-on-one. Application/Transition Easter is not a sad holiday. Yes, you may feel sad to think about the the price that Jesus died to pay for your sin. But Easter is a celebration of life. Jesus didn t stay dead. Jesus showed His power over sin and death through His resurrection. Peter was an eyewitness of Jesus resurrection. Easter is also a celebration of love. You can know that Jesus loves you so much that He died for you. Gospel Tip Don t be afraid to ask the kids questions and allow them to ask you questions. If you don t know how to answer a kid s question, look it up in the Bible together. But always tell them what you do know. You know God loves them and sent His Son to die for their sins. Refer to the tip-in pages between pages 626-627 in your KBC Study Bible to help you answer a child s questions about salvation.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens 5-10 (page 5) Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible Connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their forever friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story or the Easter holiday? How do you feel when you think about how and why Jesus died? What do you think Peter would tell someone about his experience with Jesus? How did Peter show love for Jesus? How did Jesus show love for Peter? How does God demonstrate His love for you? Pray Give kids an opportunity to write their prayer requests on index cards. After Hang 10 time in a moment, gather the cards to take home and remember to pray for the kids in your Surf Team this week. Father, thank You for sending Jesus to die for my sins. Help me to show love to others by telling them the good news about Jesus. In Jesus name, Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. Let s look at Day 2. Take an index card and draw a picture of the empty tomb with Peter and John looking inside it. Jesus body was not there because He was raised from the dead. Let s read the prayer together. Thank You, Jesus, for Your death on the cross for me. Father God, I praise You that Jesus rose from the dead. In Jesus name, Amen.

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - EGG RELAY Spoons, plastic eggs Ask surf teams to line up single file. Give the first person in each line a spoon and a plastic egg. On a signal, ask the first child in each line to race to a marked spot and back to their line. Eggs must be balanced on the spoons while traveling. The team whose player arrives back to their line first gets a chance to answer a question. Repeat until each member has had a turn. After all questions have been answered, you may wish to repeat the race without the questions. Option 2 - PUTT-PUTT Cups, plastic eggs, rulers 5-10 Ask teams to line up single file. Give the first person in each line a ruler and a plastic egg. Set up two cups on the floor about 6-8 inches apart and about 10 feet away from each team. Explain that clubbers will use the rulers to putt the eggs between the cups. The clubbers who putt their egg between the cups or comes the closest gets a chance to answer a review question. (page 6) Easter is a perfect time to extend an invitation to kids and families to attend your church. Be sure to invite the school faculty as well. Share any special events during the weekend of Easter, such as a Good Friday service or an Easter egg hunt. Send an email to parents with the information or give each child a sticker to wear home with the information. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. What is today s character word? (Love) 2.
