Henry Bowers, ex-offco commttee member and assstant dean of Student Affars called Glman extremely competent, thorough, and attentve to detal. Glman, lke Covn, s a graduate of Cornell Unversty, and Covn termed the commttee selecton as an excellent one. I thnk Larry wll do an excellent job. He s young and well lked by the students. I have nothng but prasesfor hm. THE RESIGNATION left some members of the commttee and Unon admnstrators n a quandry as to the fate of several planned food servce nnovatons due to be mplemented ths semester. One such nnovaton, to be ntroduced January 15, s converson of The Walnut room, located on the fourth floor of the Student Center, nto a cafetera. H0wever, Covn s resgnaton may cause the openng of the Walnut Room to be delayed ndefntely. Bowers explaned, The rooms ready to go, but we may encounter a staffng and supervsory problem. Whether he can take on all ths by hmself s the problem. Covn agreed that staff problems had been very great, but felt hs departure would present.no undue dffcultes. It mght slow down expanson some, but I don t really thnk t would cause any greatlproblems. There doesn't have to be any problems because the deas have been brought out already. BUTBOWERS feels some fnancal dffculty wll result from Covn s resgnaton snce t wll mean some delay n openng certan areas. A lot depends on the people avalable and how well Larry wll be able to handle t all," he sad. The search for a sutable assstant to Glman s now underway, but Bowers sad that the retanng of one mght take some tme. A meetng of the food servces commttee s scheduled for Thursday afternoon to attempt and solve the Walnut room confuson and revew Glman s proposals for operatng the food servces. l l Entertanment board falls short agan.l Monday nght s sparsely attended Rck Roberts concert n the Unversty Student Center Theatre served to underlne the shortcomngs of ths year s Entertanment Commttee. The concert was poorly planned, poorly supervsed and, n short, nothng more than a waste of money. The Entertanment Commttee has succeeded admrably n squanderng ts money all semester, and ts $500 outlay for the Roberts concert countnued ts reputaton for thoughtless plannng. The performance attendance was hampered by the fact that lttle attenton was gven by the Commttee to publczng the event. Few students even knew that the concert was to be gven. Ths reflects the nablty of the commttee to deal wth the realty of the stuaton. Odds are that any underpublczed event s gong to lose money, and that was exactly the poston the planners of Monday nght s concert put themselves n. Earler last semester, the Entertanment Commttee exhbted ts poor attempts at concert plannng by presentng n the Student Center Theatre concerts whch were unsutable to the premses. The result were that the new Theatre was badly damaged by carpet burns and equpment was damaged. The new Theatre s smply not conducve by the very nature of ts atmosphere to hard reek concerts. Ths poor plannng has also had nherent n t a dsregard for the tastes of the students. The entertanment provded by the Entertanment Commttee and most other campus actvtes commttees has shown an amazng lack of varety. Evdence as to the reason why ths lack of varety n muscal entertanment s controlled by a small and elte group of students. For example, Jm Trce, who s char man of the Entertanment Commttee for the Student Center, s the charman n - l charge of plannng All-Campus weekend. It s nfortunate that these thngs have One person holdng two mportant postons such as these wll undoubtedly remeded before the present semester s happened. It s the mouthpece through whch the students themselves talk. College lfe wthout ts journal s blank. Techncan, vol. 1, no. 1, February 1, 1920. Stormy road ahead. * The recently convened 93rd Congress promses to be a stormy one for Presdent Rchard M. Nxon. Both the loyal opposton Democrats and some members of Nxon s own Republcan party have become dsgruntled wth Nxon s treatment of Congress. Ths sesson s shapng up to be a battle between advocates of a strong executve branch and those who favor a more equtable dstrbuton of powers between the executve and legslatve branches of government. In recent years, Congress has abdcated a great deal of ts authorty to the executve branch. Snce the Johnson admnstraton Congress has found tself left further and further out n the cold as far as ts lawmakng functon has been concerned. Rchard Nxon has treated Congress as a lesser partner by consstently gnorng the wshes of the Senate and House of Representatves. V The present admnstraton has mpounded funds allocated by Congress for hghway mprovement as well as funds earmarked for ecologcal purposes on the grounds that the spendng of these funds would contrbute to the present nflatonary nature of the naton s economy. By mpoundng these funds, Nxon has dsregarded the wshes of the most representatve branch of the US. government, the US. Congress. The conduct of the Vetnam War snce Nxon s successful re-electon campagn has also aroused a large degree of dscontent n Congress. The peace that was at hand at the end of October s as yet Hadany lately? Page 2/ Techncan / January 10, 1973 stll elusve, and the bombng of the North whch has oscllated between saturaton bombng and perodc bombng pauses has renewed actve Congressonal opposton on both sdes of the asle. Several of the Presdent s own poltcal colleagues have voced ther own dsapproval of hs conduct of the war whch the Amercan people were led to beleve would end f Nxon got hs four more years. The war promses to be a pont of contnung frcton between the Presdent and Congress. The Watergate affar also promses to rase some Congressonal eyebrows. Senator Sam van, the senor Senator from NC, s headng the Congressonal nvestgaton of the affar, and Ervn s a strong advocate of the resezure of Congressonal powers. Hs nvestgaton wll undoubtedly help to reassert Congressonal nfluence n government and wll also help to nstll a certan amount of fear nto the executve branch. The effect of the Congressonal desre to recover some of ts lost powers, n company wth the "ontnung war, and the nvestgaton of Wa gate s yet to be seen, but there are rumblngs of dscontent comng from Captol Hll. Ths sesson of Congress seems determned to regroup ts lost powers and once agan exert ts rghtful power upon the Amercan governmental system. The success of ths attempt wll nsure the contnued rght of the Amer can people to have a voce n government through ther elected representatves n Congress. However, large anmals can have ntecourse wth women and are occasonal subjects of pornographc stag" flms. My understandng s that such actvtes are usually accompaned by an amount of cauton and trepdaton proportonal to the sze of the anmal nvolved. Dogs and horses appear to be favored and l have heard of no report ofanyone makng t wth a dolphn or whale. although ths would seem to pose a greater challenge. Men also have ntercourse wth anmals, small farm anmals beng preferred. but never wth chckens. Occasonally the queston of possble pregnancy through human - nonhuman sexual contact s rased. Such an event s a bologcal mpossblty because of the vast dfferences. between the protoplasmc and genetc materal of sex cells n dfferent speces. Last summer I was one of two women laborers on a cty street crew. After constant shovelng of blacktop and other heavy work. I m afrad that may have developed a herna. ls - ths possble for a 1 9 year old woman? A herna usually refers to a protruson of a loop of ntestne through the abdomnal wall. Broadly speakng, t can refer to a protruson of any organ or structure through the wall that contans t. Whle hernas are much more. cornmon among men, they can also occur n women. In men, the usual herna occurs when a loop of bowel goes through the ngunal canal whch s formed n early development when the testes descended from the area behnd the abdomnal cavty (reptropertoneal space). In women. comparable structures exst through whch a a may occur. One such structure n the mal area s called the canal of Nuck. But ngunal hernas are not common n Women. More often. they have femoral hernas resultng from bowel escapng through the same openng through whch the femoral artery, ven and nerve descend to the leg. Ths s also n the gron area. My surgcal consultant assures me that t s entrely possble for young women to have a herna. I suggest that you be examned by a physcan to determne f ths s the case. lfyou do have a herna t should be repared snce a potentally dangerous stuaton can develop f the loop ofbowel becomes trapped. Fnally. fa herna occurred durng your job, you may be elgble for workwoman s compensaton. How does one go about gettng brth control plls from a college health center? There are several types of college health centers when t comes to contracepton. Some are realstc and vew contraceptve servces as beng wthn the defnton of complete health care. Others feel ths way but dsguse ther ntentons so that you have to know whch doctor to see so you fabrcate a story sayng you are about to get.marred etc. The last group, fortunately dmnshng n number. act as f by gnorng the subject t wll go away. They do not seem bothered by the fact that so many people get pregnant when they don t want to because they are gnorant about where to get servces. To check out your health center. call the appontment nurse or the drector f they do not have a publcally stated polcy, and ask f contraceptve servces are avalable for all students and f there are any strngs attached. Sometmes a separate fee s charged whch s usually reasonable and necessary to defray the extra costs nvolved n ths servce. If you draw a blank at your school, check and see f there s a Planned Parenthood chapter n town, or f health department does famly plannng. Sometmes hosptals have famly plannng clncs. Prvate doctors often can be used. Whenever you make an appontment for contraceptve help. be sure and be specfc wth the secretary or nurse you speak to about what you want so that you can avod the stuaton of seeng someone who won t help you. Proper prescrbng of contraceptves for women requres that a medcal and sexual hstory be taken and a physcal examnaton ncludng a 'pelvc exam be performed. Certan lab tests are also n order. If you are havng trouble fndng a doctor to see you, remember that the combnaton of condom and contraceptve foam. avalable wthout a prescrpton. s hghly effectve brth control. For Bob Yoder Organ s just a hobby by Sandra Mllers Wrter In a basketball season marked by sell-out crowds and State students clmbng over each other to be frst n lne for the good seats, there s, surprsngly enough, one devotee of Wolfpack basketball who walks calmly past hundreds of mpatent fans watng for entrance to each home game and clams hs own specally reserved front-row box seat. WHO IS THIS prvleged character and how does he manage to outwt the eagleeyed tcket takers at Reynolds Colseum? Bob Yoder, organst for all State home basketball games, revealed hs secret wth a smle. I just carry my musc n wth me, he sad. Yoder, a graduate of Wake Forest Unversty, began playng organ for State basketball games nearly four years ago as a substtute for a frend of hs who held the job at that tme. When offered the poston of organst on a regular bass, A MAN AND A MOVEMENT by Jay Acton and Alan LeMond The nsde story that the establshment couldn t slence! Yoder s a bachelor and holds a full-tme job as an nsurance underwrter wth the New Hampshre Insurance Company. He referred to hs organ playng as just a hobby, and sad that, besdes State basketball games, he also plays for horse shows, fashon shows, and beauty pageants. COMMENTING ON HIS most unusual experence whle playng for State, Yoder remembered a nght when the colseum lghts faled, ncludng a tny emergency lamp kept besde the organ for just such occasons, and he was forced to play from memory n total darkness. Yoder ponted out that the organ whch he now uses was purchased two years Theatre ago as a replacement for a twenty-fve year-old model notorous for ts stckng keys and muffled sound. Keepng a wary eye on the clock. Yoder explaned that hs job s to play at half-tmes and between the freshman and varsty games. After the freshman game, Yoder alternates playng wth the State pep band. I really enjoy the pep band; they add so much to the exctement of the game," he commented. Yoder has mssed only one home game snce he began playng for State four seasons ago, and he was quck to pont out that, n spte of loyalty to hs own Alma Mater, 1 stll pull for State when they play Wake Forest. Yoder also offered a predcton on ths year s Wolfpack. Ths s the best team that I ve seen snce I ve been here, he sad. I thnk they ll wn all - ther games.
