Also, we will have a Branch raffle at 50p per ticket for the Branch BRF.

The Lincoln Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers AGM Saturday 26 th April 2008, Lincoln 10:00am 11:00am Holy Communion in the Ringers Chapel at Lincoln Cathedral Annual Meeting followed by lunch at Bailgate Methodist Church, Lincoln (Please see the Ringing world/ Guild website for details of who needs names for lunch and when they are need by) Afternoon 8 bell Striking competition at Harmston, method Yorkshire Surprise Major It is hoped that Waddington and Washingborough will also be open during the afternoon. Arrangements for a tea and striking competition results will hopefully be made with one of the afternoon towers for about 5 pm. 6:30 7:30 pm if there is enough wishing to ring the cathedral bells will be available. Please try to go along to show your support. Apologies for absence will not be accepted from the floor of the meeting they must be passed on to the Guild secretary Les Townsend, in writing before the start of the meeting. Please look in the Ringing World / Guild Website for finalised details and we ll do our best to send them out on email. 2008 AGM report It was the turn of Grimsby to host the AGM this year, with ringing which catered for all present, followed by tea and cakes, put on superbly by Jane Drinkall, Maureen Kennington, Margaret Allen and Joanne Smith, followed by the service and then the business meeting (and extra entertainment with the help of a drunk and the police...next time there is a Branch event at Grimsby be sure to be there!!) Sadly this year, Frank did not wish to continue as Ringing Master. We are sure that all those who have regularly attended Branch practices with Frank in charge will miss his valued leadership and appreciate all that he has done for the Northern Branch. We wish him and his wife, Maureen, all the best for the future. He has now been replaced by Matthew Jeffery, who has had over twenty years ringing experience and can ring up to Surprise Maximus. Also the Branch representative for the Guild, along with the secretary, his main priority is to support as much of the ringing that goes on in the Branch as he can, and if anybody needs help in organising any quarter peals, or peals for that matter, he is the man to inform. WOULD YOU ALL PLEASE NOTE: if you do ring any quarters or peals, please let him know so that he can keep an accurate record as to who has rung what. We wish him well in his new post. Unfortunately, Lorraine Bateman remained as secretary so you re lumbered with her for another year! David Hibbert remains with her as treasurer and Dorothy Robinson also remains on the Guild Bell Repair Fund committee, after taking an

active part last year. We now have a new newsletter editor in the form of Joy Lord, who is known on the committee as the Guild simulator committee member. We wish to extend a warm welcome to all new members who have joined us this year: Andy and Jenny Bennett, Jenny Murch (Barrow on Humber) Daniel Young, Eleanor Fuller (Barton on Humber) Welcome back to Joan and Ifor Barton (Grasby) It was confirmed that the structural engineer for Walesby has said that there is to be no lengthy ringing, such as quarters or peals, until further notice, but shorter ringing can take place for special services and practices, providing the 20ft cordon is in place outside the tower. It is now just left for the committee to look at organising Branch social events and consider Bell Repair Fund requests for Welton le Wold, Legbourne, Walesby, Ulceby and Barrow. The Alan Hewitt Shield was won this year by Middle Rasen tower, not only because of their healthy progress during 2007, but also because of their overall friendliness. The Ringing Master organised a quarter peal there on 10 th February to mark their achievement: MIDDLE RASEN SS Peter and Paul 1260 Plain Bob Minor 1. Steve Wright 2. Frank Kennington 3. Matthew B. Jeffery (C) 4. John Cade 5. Charles Cade 6. Lorraine J. Bateman This quarter peal was also rung as a get well message to Middle Rasen ringer Linda Patrick. Lincoln Guild Clothing You may have seen a few branch members wearing their Lincoln Guild Bellringers tops. You too can have one of your own. The range includes Polo shirts 15, Sweat shirts 16, Rugby shirts 22.50 and Hooded tops in various colours and sizes. And a small donations goes to the Guild Bell repair fund. If you are interest in finding out more / placing an order, please contact Sue Faull mailto:master@ldgcb.org.uk Oxfordshire Outing Saturday 19 th April, Simon Cole has arranged a tour for the branch to the Bicester area, Oxfordshire. It is sure to a great day out. Anybody interested in joining us should contact:

mailto:simonjcole@hellobroadband.co.uk mailto:secretary@nb.ldgcb.org.uk or Guild 8 Bell Striking Competition This year the test piece for the guild 8 bell striking competition will be a course of Yorkshire Surprise Major. The competition is to be held on Saturday 26 th April as part of the Guild AGM. It is important that we get a team together and begin practices as soon as possible. Therefore please would anybody interested in practicing in readiness for the Striking competition contact Matthew Jeffery mailto:brm@nb.ldgcb.org.uk as soon as possible (by 25 th Feb). Guild Committee Meeting At the resent Guild Committee meeting arrangements for the Guild AGM where considered (please see AGM details). The Guild 6 bell striking competition will take place on Saturday 13 th September 2008, the cup competition being at Welton and the plate at Dunholme, it is proposed that teas are served at Scothern. The guild intends to enter a team into the Ridgman Trophy Contest to be held at Gressenhall, Norfolk on 14 th June. The Ringing World Roadshow will be on 5 th and 6 th September at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. The Guild newsletter has a new editorial team who are keen to receive news and photos from the branches to be included. Members should use the guild website as much as possible. Branch secretaries or nominated PR officers should ensure that the most up to date information is included. Also towers should be encouraged to send any updated information regarding their tower including changes to practice nights to Dove Online. Updated information from Dove Online will then be updated automatically on the website. The guild is to look into purchasing one Ringing World A3 ringing recruitment poster per ringable tower, which they can use to display in a prominent local place such as a library or community hall. And finally the next big fundraising from the Guild BRF repair fund initiative is a Grand draw raffle to be drawn at the Guild AGM on Saturday 26 th April. Books of 5 tickets cost 1. At the moment I have 20 books, but I am sure to have more soon, so bring your money to Waltham or let Lorraine Bateman know if you would like to buy some. Branch Committee Meeting We began by discussing branch committee members. As Ted is an Hon. President, it was decided that the Northern Branch also needs an active President who will be able to chair our committee and branch meetings. Forward any suggestions to Lorraine Bateman. The rest of the committee are Matthew Jeffery, Lorraine Bateman, David Hibbert, Joy Lord, Dorothy Robinson and Nan Colley. It is felt that the committee also need about 3 more members, therefore if anybody is interest, please contact Lorraine Bateman. Ideas for social evenings include a spring night with a guest speaker at Barton to include a supper, Summer festival at Market and Middle Rasen with ringing and a BBQ and a quiz night at Grasby. These events will also hopefully raise money for the Branch bell repair fund. For the Guild BRF an organist entertainment night will hopefully be arranged. It is also hoped that a young ringers day can be organised for our younger members.

When applying for BRF grant, members are required to follow the guidelines below. Lincolnshire Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers Northern Branch Bell Repair Fund guidelines 1) Objective of the Fund To promote Christian Religion by providing financial assistance to churches in the Northern Branch area for the purpose of maintaining and improving their bell installations. 2) Maintain and Improvement shall be deemed to include the following: a) Installing new frames and fittings. b) Recasting bells c) Overhauling and re clappering of bells. d) Augmentation and bringing existing bells frames and fitting into an adequate state of repair. 3) Applications for grants shall be submitted to the Branch secretary one month before the March and September committee meetings. On June 27th we are holding a social evening in the Church Hall. Geoff Bryant our Bellringing historian will be talking to you about the history of bells and bellringing. The Holy trinity Handbell ringers will be giving us a recital conducted by Roger Lord, another Barton Bellringer. We shall be serving a delicious supper and who knows, we might throw a little quiz in. You will have to bring your own bottles! But there will be coffee and tea. The Guild Simulator will be in the Church if anyone wants a ring on this. So don t forget your tickets. There will be a further update in next newsletter of when the tickets go on sale. Mark the date in your diary.

On Saturday a group of us went to Grimsby to help erect the six bell simulator. On Monday evening Roger Andrew and myself again joined the Grimsby ringers to entertain and introduce to ringing a group of Cub Scouts. Joy Till and Pam Cook very kindly came with their handbells. Ian Till and Sue Faull helped on the simulator. We were all so grateful to them as they are all West Lindsey branch members and their expertise in teaching was so gratefully appreciated. It all went off very successfully. Grimsby has a full programme in the week ahead.
