As A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ - 2 Timothy 2:3 ---- You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Introduction: A. In order to be a good soldier of Christ WE Must: 1. Enlist 2. Be Armed 3. Patiently Drill 4. Obey Orders 5. Courageously Fight 6. Pursue The Victory II. The Enlistment: A. Desire Be Willing to Deny Self Accept Duty & Follow Christ 1. Matthew 16:24-27 (NKJV) Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. [25] For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. [26] For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? [27] For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. B. Enlist by believing & obeying the gospel 1. Mark 16:15-16 (NKJV) And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. [16] He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 2. Acts 2:38 (NKJV) Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.... [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. 3. Galatians 3:26-27 (NKJV) For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. C. No such thing as middle ground 1. Matthew 6:24 (NKJV) "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 2. Matthew 12:30 (NKJV) He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad. a. Jesus is our captain and has made a way for us. He will not ask us to make any sacrifice he was not willing to make, his loyalty is unquestionable and his leadership tested and refined (Heb 2:9-18). b. Richard Newton in his book entitled, Following the Example of Jesus writes, When Alexander the Great was leading his army over some mountains once, they found their way all stopped up with ice and snow. His soldiers were tired out with hard marching, and so disheartened with the difficulties before them, that they halted. It seemed as if they would rather lie down and die than try to go on any farther. When Alexander saw this, he did not begin to scold the men, and storm at them. Instead of this, he got down from his horse, laid aside his cloak, took up a pickaxe, and, without saying a word to any one, went quietly to work, digging away at the ice. As soon as the officers saw this they did the same. The men looked on in surprise for a few moments, and then, forgetting how tired they were, they went to work with a will, and pretty soon they got through all their difficulties. Those were good soldiers, because they followed the example of their Page 1 of 5

leader. III. The Weaponry and Armor of our Fight - Eph 6:11-13 - Putting it All On... A. Having girded your waist with truth (6:14) 1. This refers to the foundational garment among the items of armor. 2. It would not be the first thing you noticed about the soldier s apparel, however without it he could not persevere. His shield was attached to the loin belt and it is the place where his sword would hang. Without his belt his breastplate would be flapping in the wind. 3. The same is true of us, i.e. the truth is our foundational garment (2 Timothy 4:2-4). B. Breastplate of righteousness (6:14) 1. The breastplate protected the heart, ribs and chest. The text says nothing about protecting the back, because the soldier of Christ is in a do or die battle from which he cannot flee. C. Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel (6:15) 1. The very idea of footwear of this kind demands preparation for battle. This is not one that is ill prepared. It also offers stability and soundness. 2. The gospel of peace will offer us a solid foundation (Romans 1:16; Isaiah 52:7). D. Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one (6:16). 1. The Romans larger shield were 2 x 4 made of wood, covered with thick hide or leather bound with iron. a. In war soldiers would stand together with shields side by side and another row would have their shields above their heads. It was important that they be able to trust the loyalty of one another. Fiery darts were wrapped and dipped in pitch or a flammable substance and then lit. Shields would be soaked in water, hoping to quench the fire. 2. Our shield is our faith which will withstand the fiery darts of the wicked one. Satan is a great observer of our weaknesses. Interestingly, there were three types of arrows that were fired. Regular arrows, arrows that were lit, then those that combusted on impact. The last ones would be filled with combustible material that were made to look harmless. Some would ignore such arrows until it was too late and then things would be on fire. (Satan s work in churches, lives, families, marriages, etc.). E. Helmet of salvation (Protected head and face). 1. The protection our hope provides (1 Thes 5:8) a. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (NKJV) ---- But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. F. Offensive Weapon: the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Jesus example). G. Prayer our preparation and commitment. 1. This is our line of communication to God. IV. Must Patiently Drill A. Requires commitment 2 Tim 1:12; 1 Tim 4:15 1. 2 Timothy 1:12 (NKJV) ---- 2 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. 2. 1 Timothy 4:15 (NKJV) ---- 5 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. B. Requires effort & self control 1 Cor 9:25-27 1. 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 (NKJV) ---- 5 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body Page 2 of 5

and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. C. Sacrifice & determination Rom 12:1,2; Col 3:1,2 1. Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV) ---- 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 2. Colossians 3:12 (NKJV) ---- 2 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; D. Knowledge of our enemy 2 Cor. 2:11; 11:3,13; 1 Pet 5:8,9; Rev. 2:24 1. 2 Cor 2:11 (NKJV) ---- lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2. 2 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) ---- But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. a. 2 Corinthians 11:13 (NKJV) ---- 3 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 3. 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV) ---- Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 4. Revelation 2:24 (NKJV) ---- 4 Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. V. We Must Obey Orders: A. From The Commander & Chief Mat. 28:18-20; Col. 3:17; 1 Jo 2:3 1. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) ---- 8 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen. 2. Colossians 3:17 (NKJV) ---- 7 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. 3. 1 John 2:3 (NKJV) ---- Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. B. From those who have rule over us in Christ Heb 13:7,17; 1 Pet 5:1-4 1. Hebrews 13:7 (NKJV) ---- Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. a. Hebrews 13:17 (NKJV) ---- 17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. 2. 1 Peter 5:1-4 (NKJV) ---- 1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. C. As found in the gospel of Christ James 1:22-25; Phili 3:16; 2 Thes 1:7-9 1. James 1:22-25 (NKJV) ---- 2 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer Page 3 of 5

VI. but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. 2. Philippians 3:16 (NKJV) ---- 6 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. 3. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (NKJV) ---- and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, Must Courageously Fight A. Enduring hardships 2 Tim. 2:3; Heb 10:32; 11:34; 12:2,3; 1. 2 Timothy 2:3 (NKJV) ---- You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2. Hebrews 10:32 (NKJV) ---- 2 But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 3. Hebrews 11:34 (NKJV) ---- 4 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 4. Hebrews 12:2-3 (NKJV) ---- looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. B. Against temptation - 1 Cor. 10:13; James 1:12 1. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV) ---- 3 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 2. James 1:12 (NKJV) ---- 2 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. C. Always ready!! 2 Tim 4:5 1. 2 Timothy 4:5 (NKJV) ---- But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. D. Defending the gospel Phili 1:17 1. Philippians 1:17 (NKJV) ---- 7 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. E. The good fight of faith Psa. 144:1; 1 Tim 1:18; 6:12; 2 Cor. 10:3,4 1. Psalm 144:1 (NKJV) ---- 1Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle 2. 1 Timothy 1:18 (NKJV) ---- 8 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 3. 1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV) ---- 2 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 4. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (NKJV) ---- For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, VII. Must Pursue the Victory: A. 1st - Over Self - Rom 6:16,17; Phili 4:13; 1 Jo 5:4 1. Romans 6:16-17 (NKJV) ---- 6 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed Page 4 of 5

from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 2. Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) ---- 3 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 3. 1 John 5:4 (NKJV) ---- For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. B. Help others do the same - Gal 6:1; Mat. 7:1-5; 1 Tim 3:16 1. Galatians 6:1 (NKJV) ---- 1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2. Matthew 7:1-5 (NKJV) ----1 Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, Let me remove the speck from your eye ; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother s eye. 3. 1 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)6 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory. C. Fight together Phili 1:27-30; John 17:20,21 1. Philippians 1:27-30 (NKJV) ---- 7 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. 29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me. 2. John 17:20-21 (NKJV) ---- 20 I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. D. Victory can be yours! - 1 Cor. 15:55-58; 2 Tim 4:7,8 1. 1 Corinthians 15:55-58 (NKJV) ---- 55 O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 2. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NKJV) ---- I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
